STAND AND BASSINET COMBINATION Filed Aug. 20, 1948 1 Ennuuuunuu /8 Patented Oct. 6, 1953 STAND AND BASSINET COMBINATION Mary E. Heyward, Brockton, Mass, assignor to American Hospital Supply Corporation, Evanston, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application August 20, 19 48, Serial No. 45,399 4 Claims. (Cl. -2)
and in the movement of the structure, both the cabinet and bassinet have to be moved together.
An object of the present invention is to provide a structure obviating the above disadvane tages and providing a mobile bassinet structure readily separable from the stand or cabinet structure. Yet another object is to provide a combination in which a mobile cabinet structure may be interlocked with a stand which provides a table and cabinet, the stand serving to stabilize the bassinet and yet permitting these parts to be readily separated when it is desired to move the bassinet to a different room, etc. Yet another object is to provide a bassinet and stand combination in which the stand table is adapted to be received within the bassinet supporting frame while at the same time providing a cabinet at table height at one end of the table and adapted to be brought adjacent the bassinet when the parts are in telescoping position. Other specific objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds.
The invention is illustrated, in a single embodiment, by the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a stand structure embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a. perspective view of a bassinet structure adapted to be brought into cooperative relation with the stand shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view showing the bassinet structure and stand structure in telescoping relation; and Fig. 4, an enlarged detail sectional view showing mechanism for releasably looking a fence structure in elevated position.
In the illustration given, A designates a stand structure and B designates a bassinet structure.
The stand A may be of any suitable construction. In the illustration given, I provide a table In supported at one end by the legs I l and at its forward end by the leg 12. Upon the rear end of the table is supported a cabinet I3 having a partition floor l4 and doors Hi. It will be understood that the cabinet may be of any suitable type or construction. I prefer to provide a frame I6 for receiving a card bearing the babys name. If desired, one of the legs Il may be provided with a basin supporting ring H.
The table In may be provided with fences I8 as a protective measure when the baby is being bathed or dressed on the table. Any suitable fence structure which may be brought into the raised position illustrated and then moved into a position below the table or to one side of the top of the table, may be provided. By moving the fences away from the top of the table, the parts A and B may be brought into telescoping relation, asillustrated in Fig. 3. The fences may be swung downwardly into a position along the top of the table or they may be supported upon rotatable members, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4. Here, the fences are each carried upon a shaft l9 rotatably supported in bosses on the table 10, and each shaft may be equipped with a locking member 20 adapted to engage a pivotally mounted latch 2| carried by the boss 22. A spring 23 normally'urges each latch toward engagement with a tooth 24 of a member 20. It will be understood that any suitable fence structure mounted for movement away from the top of the tablemay be employed.
The bassinet structure B may also be of any suitable construction. The bassinet may be made a permanent part of the frame structure or it may be formed as a separable part and thus be carried by a frame structure equipped with wheels. In the specific illustration given, I provide a bassinet 25 formed of plastic material or of any other suitable material and the bassinet is supported upon a frame 26. In the specific illustration given, the frame 26 comprises a pair of tubular side panels 21 connected at their tops by the cross-bars 28 and 29. A single cross-bar 30 at the lower end of the frame 26 may also be provided.
For suspending the bassinet 25 within the frame 26, I provide the depending arms 3| illustrated more clearly in Fig. 2. It will be understood that any number of arms may be provided so that the bassinet may be supported upon a horizontal plane, or, if desired, the bassinet may be tilted. I prefer, however, to support the bassinet 25 in a horizontal plane upon the frame 26.
The frame 26 is provided with wheel-equipped casters 32. It will be understood that wheels of any desired size facilitating the movement of the bassinet may be provided.
a position close to the cabinet I3 in which supplies are maintained. When itis desiredto bathe the baby, the structure maybe" moved away from the table and the baby tranmred to the table II), the fence li bein'g swung-totheir elevated position, as shown in Fig. After' bathing, the baby is returned-t0- the the fences are swung down to lowermost position and the structure 26 is moved into the-telescoping relationship with the table it, as shown in Fig. 3.
When' it' is desired. to'ztake the baby to its mother's room, the structurelimay beanoved away from stand A- and thus only the bassinet will be carried'ithro'ugh' the corridors and tothe mother's room. .Later the structure. is returned and brought into: the position shown in Fig. 3 where the mobilebassinet-unit is thus anchored by the relatively rigid stand.
In all of the foregoing operations, it will-be noted that the nurse is not-ra uiredtostoop or bend to any substantial extent because'all of the dressing and bathing operations are performed at table height and the cabinetis also within easy reach at the standingheight ot the nurse; At the same time; the cabinet'is located also in horizontal alignment withthe bassinet when it isbrought into' the position shownin Fig.1 3.
The resulting structure is extremely compact; taking up'no more space than has heretofore been required for a bassinet while; at, the same time, permitting themovement of the bassinet away from the stand whenever desired.
While in theforegoing specification, I have set forth aspecific structure in considerable detail for the purpose of illustrating an embodiment of the invention-,- it will-be understood that 4 such details of structure may be varied widely by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In combination, a stand consisting of a table having two legs at one end and a centrally located leg at the other, a cabinet supported upon one endof the table a wheel-equipped frame havingisides spaced aport-and'removably receiving said table, and a bassinet supported by said frame at a position above said table.
2. In combination, a stand consisting of a table having two=legsat one end and a centrally lo- .cated leg. at the other, a cabinet supported upon oneendlofthe table and providing compartments open at-theirends; a wheel-equipped frame having sides spaced apart and removably straddling sai'd't'able'; anda'bessinet supported by said frame at-a position above said table.
3. In combination, a stand consisting of a table having a plurality of legs providing. a support therefore, a cabinet supported upon one end. of said table and providing compartments, a wheelequipned frame having sides spaced apart and removably' receiving said table, and a bassinet supporteuby said frame" at a position above said table.
4. Injcombinatioma statlonary'stand comprisingja; table having depending legs resting upon the floor and stabilizing the table against movement'upo'n' the floor, a cabinet supported at one: end 01' the table and providing compartments therein, and a mobile bassinet-supporting frame comprising side wall members secured together in spaced relation and removably receiving said table, said frame being equippedwith wheels, and a bassinet supported by said frame at a position above-said tabie.
