CUTTER FOR CLOTHING Filed Jan. 10, 1945 PHILIP KA T2, I
Max W Patented June 11, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CUTTER FOR CLOTHING Philip Katz, Riverside, Calif.
Application January 10, 1945, Serial No. 572,230
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a cutter for clothing, and more particularly to a novel shears, peculiarly adapted for use by tailors, dressmakers, and the like.
An object of this invention i the construction of a cutter or shears having a novel means for accurately guiding the shears over the cloth being operated upon.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a novel and efficient leg unit having a roller or wheel extending from the lower portion of the grip of the primary jaw of the cutting device or shears.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, showing parts also in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in elevation looking at the opposite side of the shears to that shown in Fig.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, I designates the primary blade and 2 is the auxiliary blade. The primary blade is provided with an upstanding body 3. A suitable pivotal connection at 4 is provided for retaining the two blades together. The primary blade I is provided with a grip 5 and the auxiliary blade 2 is provided with a grip 6.
The primary blade I has its lower edge formed substantially on a horizontal plane, as shown in Fig. 1, and this portion of said blade acts as a runner to slide easily over the cloth.
On the grip 5, and extending outwardly from the lower portion 5a is the angular leg 1. This leg 1 comprises a horizontal portion 8 and an integrally downwardly extending portion 9 (Fig. 2). This downwardly extending Or vertical portion 9 has a yoke I0 on its lower end, and revolvably mounted on this yoke is a roller or wheel ll. Wheel II, it is to be noted, has its lower portion in the same horizontal plane as the lower edge of the primary blade I. This wheel structure gives an admirable support for the primary blade and its grip, whereby efficient results are obtained in cutting the cloth.
This device is peculiarly constructed for use as stated, and it is efiicient because of its stability, and the ease of operation of the shears.
It is to be noted that by reason of the peculiar construction the wheel H and lower edge of the primary blade act conjointly as a unitary runher for the entire device during its operation on the cloth being out.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates during the extensive manufacture of the same, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
As a new article of manufacture, a tailors or dressmakers shears comprising a primary and an auxiliary blade pivotally connected together, said primary blade being straight throughout the greater portion of its lower edge, each of said blades being provided with a rearwardly extending grip, a laterally extending angular leg projecting outwardly only from the side of the grip of the primary blade, whereby said angular leg clears the grip of the auxiliary blade, said angular leg comprising a horizonta1 portion integral at its inner end only with the side portion of the grip on said primary blade, said leg being provided with a vertically downwardly extending portion at the outer end of said horizontal portion, said downwardly extending portion spaced from the side of said grip on said auxiliary blade, said vertically downwardly extending portion provided on its lower end with an inverted yoke, and a roller in said yoke and rotatably mounted thereon, whereby said roller has its lower portion in horizontal alignment with the lower edge of said primary blade.
PHILIP KATZ.
