No. 240,011.l
Patented-April 12,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL N.VCURTISS AND THODORE CURTISS, OF READING, MICHIGAN.
CUSPIDORV FOOT-REST.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 240,011, dated April 12, 1881.
Application filed January 31, 1881. (No modeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL N. CURTISS and THEOIIORE CURTISS, of Reading, Hillsdale county, Michigan, have invented an I1nprovement in Cuspidor Foot-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and., useful improvements of combined foot-rests and cuspidors; and the invention consists in the peculiar consti-notion and arrangement of parts by means of which the top of the foot-rest is raised, disclosing a cuspdor, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section with the top opened. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section with the cover closed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a foot.. rest or stool, the top B of which is upholstered, as shown, and hinged at its rear side to the body.
a is a hook projecting from the inner face of the cover or top, and is designed to engage with the spring-latch C,whicl1 is pivotally secured to the inner face of one of the legs, its lower end being provided with a proper knob, b, by means of which the latch may be withdrawn from its engagement with the hook a.
In one end of the body of the stool we secure a threaded bolt, c, upon which is threaded the spring-block d, being held in place by the jam-nut e.
D is a coil-spring placed upon the springblock, one end of said spring being secured to the block while the opposite end is looped to embrace the guide-rod E, projecting from the inner face of the cover or lid.
F represents a cuspidor, which sits Withii the body of the device, as shown. y
The inner face of the cover or top is padded, preferably with oil-cloth.. vWhen the cover is closed the padding on the cover fits closely down upon the top of the cuspidor, and this prevents any possibility of spilling the contents of the cuspidor should the stool be accidentally overturned.
When it is desired to use the cuspidor it is only necessary to press the foot upon the knob b, which will release the spring-latch from the hook, and the spring will cause the lid or top to fly open. Should the spring D become too weak, from long usage, to open the cover, the tension of the VSpring may be increased by turninggthe spring-block farther onto the bolt and again secure it to place by screwing up the jam-nut.
By this construction We produce an article of furniture that is both useful and ornamental as a foot-rest, and which incloses a spittoon or cuspidor. hiding it froinvievv except when required for use. l
What we claim as our invention is- 1. A foot rest or stool the top of which is hinged to the body, substantially as described, in combination with a spring-latch and hook for holding said cover closed, substantially as set forth.
2. A foot rest or stool the top of which is hinged to the body and provided with a sprin glatch and hook for keeping the cover in its closed position, in combination with a spring for opening said cover, substantially as specified.
3. A footrest constructed substantially as described, and adapted to receive a spittoon or cuspidor, in combination with the spring D, spring-latch C, and hook a, substantially as set forth.
4. A foot-rest, the top of which is hinged to the body and providedwith a sprin g for opening said top, in combination with the springy block d, bolt c, and nut c, for the purpose of regulating the force or tension of said spring, substantially as specified.
5. A foot-rest, in combination with a cuspidor inclosed Within the body of said rest or stool, the top of which is adapted to form a Water-tight cover to such cuspidor, substantially as set forth.
