BABY-WALKER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,116, dated May 6, 1890.

Beit known that I, ADOLPI-I RosENrHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-VValkers, of

which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The objects of myinvention are to provide convenient means for assisting. a child to walk and amuse itself, and at the same time provide a seat permanently attached thereto by means of hinged straps and hinges for the child, when required, and also to provide means for adapting the chair for the use of a large or small child, and in connection with an undivided top, consisting of a single board centrally perforated, provide means for filling a portion of the opening by a sliding board having a segment removed therefrom and adj ustably connected with the frame of the device. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a babywalker constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the Fig. 3 is a top view of the same. Fig. 4: is a bottom view of the same.

In said drawings, A represents a rectangular frame supported by and to which are attached the four legs B. Each of said legs is formed in two parts adapted to slide the one upon the other by a bolt 19 passing through vertical slots in said parts, so that the height of the device can be adapted for the use of a large or small child. To the top of the frame A is attached an undivided top C, having a central round opening 0 of such diameter as to be capable of receiving the body of a large child. The top 0, being made in one piece and undivided, forms a strong connection for the four sides of the frame and prevents racle ing of said parts; but to apparently reduce the size of the opening 0 a board D is placed under the top 0 and has its ends received between slats a and a secured to the frame A. Said board has a segment out out of its inner edge corresponding with a portion of the periphery of the opening 0 The board D can be moved in and out within certain limits by hand, either from the under side or from its inner edge, or by means of a tongue or strap d attached to its outer edge. The board D is adj ustably connected to the top 0 and retained in its adjusted position by means of a bolt E, passing through said top and through the slats a a and a thumb-nut e upon said bolt, the bottom slat a springing sufficiently under the pressure of the bolt and nut to clamp one end of the board D, said end being slotted or recessed at d for the passage of the bolt.

To provide the device with a seat for the child, two of the legs are united by a strip B to which the rear end of the seat F is permanently united by means of hingesf.

The seat is suspended from the top 0 by means of the folding metal straps g, pivotally attached to said top and to the front cornersof the seat, the said straps being hinged at 9 so that the seat can be folded and made to cocupy a vertical position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. The straps, having somewhat stiff hinges, will retain the seat in said folded position. The seat and the edge of the opening in the top 0 and in the board D can be upholstered or padded, as shown.

The baby-walker can be transformed into a stool by the addition of a top board H, (shown lifted in' Fig. 1,) having central projection to fit in the opening C and turn-buttons h, secured to the bottom of said projection and adapted to engage under the top 0.

Having now fully described my invention, I claim In a baby-walker, the combination of the frame A, its legs, and strip 13?, uniting two of them, and the undivided top 0, supported on said frame, with the seat F, having the rear end hinged to said strip, and the straps 9, having one end hinged to the top 0, the other end hinged to the seat, and a hinge g between said straps, the seat being adapted to be folded upward, substantially as and for the purpose described.
