llNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD soUiREs, or BEAVERTON, OREGON.
HOLDER FOR NUTS AND DIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,569, dated March 29, 1881 Application filed August 25, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD SQUIRES, of Beaverton, Washington county, Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Nuts and Dies, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved holder for nuts and dies which is simple in construction, effective, and convenient in use. 7
The invention consists of a frame or box for holding dies or nuts, and is provided with a sliding perforated bottom and an adjusting screw, and is held between the forked end of a rod or hand brace.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of myim 'iroved holder for nuts and dies, showing the manner in which it is used. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation on the line m 00, Fig. 3, of myimproved holder for dies and nuts. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower end of the same; and Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the perforated sliding bottom plate of my improved holder for nuts and dies.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The lower end, B, of a rod or bar, which may be attached to machinery or have the form of a hand-brace, A, is forked, and a square rectangular compartment or box, 0, is held between the ends of the fork. The bottom of this compartment is formed of a sliding wed geshaped plate, D, provided with aperforation, E, which plate passes through horizontalslots a short distance above the lower edge of two of the sides of the compartment 0. The threadcutting (lies F F are held in the said compartment between the bottom plate D and the tap J, and can be adjusted according to the diameter of the bolt L, upon which a thread is to be cut, by means of the screw G. The brace is preferably provided with a balancerated. to permit the threaded end of the bolt to pass through, as shown in Fig. l. .lf a nutis to be cut, the plate D is drawn out, the dies are removed, and the nut is placed in the compartment 0, upon which the plate D is returned to its place, holding the nut in the compartment. The tap is held in the vise, and, in the same manner as the nut, the end of the same is passed into the nut, upon which the brace is turned as above.
Instead of being turned by hand, the brace A or the rod, to the forked end of which my dies and nut-holder is attached, may be driven.
by machinery; but in all cases it is advisable to have a balance-wheel, H.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A holder for nuts and dies made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a compartment or box, 0, held between the forked end of a rod and provided with aperforated sliding bottom plate, g, and with a setscrew, G, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the rod or brace A of the compartment 0, of dies F, set-screw G, and perforated sliding bottom plate D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD SQUIRES.
