5 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in door locking means and particularly to a self contained baseless door lock unit embodying a handle movable into a guard to render it inaccessible when in locked position.
My invention provides a compact structure adapted to be quickly, conveniently and economically mounted on the door of a cabinet, locker, truck door and the like, and in either new or replacement installations.
Other objects and advantages of my invention, including the details of construction and arrangement of parts, will be apparent from a consideration of the following specification anddrawings,

Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic elevation of my novel lock unit in operative association with a cabinet door.
Referring to the drawings, my unit comprises an escutcheon plate or guard portion I adapted to be mounted on the outer face of a door I I, such as that of a metallic cabinet I2 shown in Fig. 7, by means of screws (not shown) extending through the d-oor II from the inner face thereof into a plurality of threaded sockets I3 in the guard portion IG. The guard IU is provided with a longitudinal groove or seat I4 of a depth and contour adapted to seat the handle I when depressed into locked position, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Extending rearwardly of the guard I0, and preferably formed integrally therewith adjacent one end, is a tubular holder collar or spring carrier composed of the endwise spaced sections I6 and I5' reinforced and joined in alignment by means of the rib I'I. The tubular collar I6 opens to the seat I4 and receives the tubular handle stem I8, the outer end of the stem being secured within the thickness of the handle and beneath the outer face thereof, as at I9. A holder rod 20 is positioned within the handle stem. I8, the rod 20 being substantially the length of the joint length of the collar portions |6-|6. The handle stem I6 is longitudinally contractible of the `rod 20, and expandable to the limit of the web 2| Within the handle stem when brought into abutment with the head 22 of the rod 20 under the action of the coil spring 23 interposed between the head 24 of the collar portion IB' and the handle stem or its web 2 I. The holder rod 20 is in turn held against withdrawal from the tubular collar portions |6-I6 by means of a headed screw 25 threaded into its end 2G. A second coil spring 2l may be interposed between the web 2| and the head 22 oirod 20 to retain rod 20 normally telescoped within the collar portions if the end of the rod 20 is not otherwise xedly secured to the head 24, although spring 2l is of lighter weight or under lower normal compression than spring 23 so as not to interfere with the normal function of the latter.
A trigger latch 28 is mounted against the rear face of guard plate I0 in longitudinal slidable relationship by means of the headed pins 29-29 extending through the slot 30. One end of the latch is provided with the offset projection 3| which extends through the slot 32 in the wall of the collar portion |15, and is adapted to project into the groove 33 formed in the periphery of the handle stem I8. The relationship of the stem groove 33 to the latch tongue 3| is such that when the handle I5 is fully seated within its seat I4 in the guard I0 the tongue 3| is projected into the groove 33, under the action of the pusher spring 34, the spring 34 being positioned between the latch ear 35 and a surface 36 within a suitable groove in the guard I ll. In this manner the door handle I5 is held locked in inaccessible position until the latch tongue 3| is withdrawn from the stem groove 33, after which the handle I 5 is projected outwardly, as indicated by the dotted position thereof in Fig. 2, under the action of its spring 23.
For release of the trigger latch, lock means are provided, preferably as illustrated, and which comprises a tumbler lock 3l received within the tubular portion 38 of the guard plate I0, the lock having a cam projection 39 rotatable by means of the key 40. The cam 39 is embraced by and is adapted to act against the inward projection 4I from the latch offset portion 42. The full illustration of Fig. 2 shows the cam 39 turned to the locked position, or rather the position in which the trigger latch is permitted to be projected for handle locking engagement under expansion of spring 34. The dotted position of latch 28 in Fig. 2 shows the position to which the latch is moved by manipulation of key 40 which causes cam 39 to bear against the latch projection 4I and to thereby slide the latch and its locking tongue 3| out of engagement; with' groove 33. To permit the handle I5 to be locked 50 handle I8.
My novel unit further comprises a latch swing plate, an integral guard projecting from the face thereof, an integral tubular holder opening within said guard and projecting rearwardly of said plataa :handle movableinto and voutof said guard havingfastem telescopically engaged in said holder Vand contractible therein, a swing bolt held ment to and from horizontal position, and to be thereby broughtinto and out of engagementwi-thV suitable keeper means such as the illustrated cabinet vertical face flange 44, or like xed Aor xable surface adjacent Vthe side kof the door on which the unit is mounted, or arcuate .groove orV the like shaped keeper (not shown).
The latch bolt 43 Vis engaged for rotatable movement with the handle l or its stem 1.8 by means .of a key and keyway engagement which, however, permits the handle stem t8 and the holtr43 to .slide relative to each other. Thus, as illustrated, the stem I8 is provided with a planar surface portion vextending longitudinally thereof .as at 45 and the tongue bolt is provided with a similarly shaped recess through which .the -stem :I8 extends. 4against relative rotation preferably in Vaposition where the tongue of the bolt 43' extends parallel to the handle I5 and in the opposed direction. The bolt 43 is further retained against `move,- ment-longitudinally ofthe stem f8 by being positioned between the spaced adjacent ends of the collar portions lli-I6', but is permitted to be pivotally rotated therebetween to the limits of the rib 111. When the stem embracing portion` of the latch bolt is provided with an enlarged circular flange 46 for the purpose of permitting actuation of supplemental bolt means, the enlimit pivotal movement by means of abutment The. two parts are locked Vof Athe terminal ends of slot 4l against rib l'l.
