UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
EZRA J. BOWEN, OF ONAWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY A. KEAOH, OF SAME PLACE, AND FREDERICK W. COOK, OF LINCOLN, IOWA.
GATE-CATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,4133, dated March 29, 1881.
Application filed January 22, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EZRA J. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, resident at Onawa, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Catches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyiu g drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of the device 1 in position. Fig. 2 is a view of the interior.
This invention relates to latches for gates,
The invention consists in the construction, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A is a casing, consisting of box B, having a cover and face, D, the latter having securing-flanges d d. Near the center of box B is located the round stud E, having hole 6, and on a line with this 2 5 stud are placed the blocks F G, having inner curved ends or faces, f and g, the whole forming the annular seat H. The sides I I of box B are shortened at face D, forming the rabbets h h. FaceD has the slot K, which extends be- 0 yond the rabbets h h. r
L L are duplicate catch-bolts, consisting of stems l, with notches z, and heads I, with extension y projecting outwardly and lugs 00 pro jectin g inwardly, the heads being beveled off 5 at w. These bolts are seated in box B with their stems resting in seats and their heads projecting-beyond the slotted face D.
M is an annulus having the spurs m m corresponding to notchesz. When the bolts L are in place this annulus is put over stud E, resting in seat H, and the spurs m in notches z. The cover is put on and the whole held by a bolt passing through a hole in the cover and into hole 0 in stud E.
This device, as constructed, is placed in a gate-post or other facing so that the bolts are horizontal.
On the face of the gate is located a spring or gravity latch arranged so as to strike the head of one of the bolts as the said gate closes.
The catch described is intended for a gate which swings both ways.
In opening the gate the latch thereon is withdrawn from between the bolt-heads and the gate swung in the desired direction. On letting go, the gate, operated by a springor weight, swings to, and the latch, riding up the bevel w of the first bolt, forces said bolt in, and by means of annulus M forces the other bolt out, which keeps the gate from passing the catch. The latch thus caught presses upon the lugs 00, bringing them in line and holding the bolts in their normal position, the rabbets h allowing the necessary play in the operation.
This catch can be placed so as to hold a gate open by locating it on a post to one side of the gate-opening.
What I claim is-- Bolts L, having stems l with notches z, and heads l, beveled off at w, in combination with annulus M, having spurs m, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I EZRA J. BOWEN.
Witnesses H. A. KEAOH, O. H. ALDRIDGE.
