JULIUS H. HUSTED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification fox ming part of Letters Patent No. 160,525, dated March 9, 1875 application filed June 29, 1874.
lowing is a specification The nature of the present invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of a spring-bolt, its case, and catch or keeper, whereby the bolt can be locked in its case when the sash is to be raised and lowered, or fastened in the catch or keeper on the other sash, as is hereinafter fully described and shown.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improvement in sash-locks, Fig. 2 a perspective representation of the bolt removed from its case, Fig. 3 a plan or top view of the case and catch or keeper, as attached to the meeting-rails of a sash.
A represents a section of the case which supports the bolt D and is inclosed on all sides except the place where the bolt passes out to enter the catch. The bottom of the bolt is provided with a notch, F, in which a stop or shoulder, a, Fig. 1, engages, when the bolt is depressed by the knob I. The end of the bolt is provided with a rod or stem, H, which pro ject-s through the outer end of the case A and supports a spring, m, coiled round it, and bearing against the bolt and case, that the bolt may be locked in the catch or keeper K when the sashes are closed. The end G of the bolt is tapered that it may more readily enter the catch K, and the top of the latter has a corresponding taper, L, as shown in Fig. 1, that the sashes may be drawn tightly together when being closed. And to form a double and sure support for bolt D in the case A, a nib, J, is formed on its bottom part, as shown at Fig. l, to bear and slide on the bottom plate 0 and to form atrip for elevating the bolt D off from the stop a, the bottom of the catch or keeper K at the inside end M is elevated so that the bolt will in descending strike it and be thrown by the force of spring m into the catch. In order that the bolt may not be obstructed in its movement,'the inside top part of the catch is cut away. The knob I is provided with a shank which passes through a slot in the top of the case A and fastens in the bolt D. From this description it will be seen that the bolt D is to be kept locked in its case A, except when it is automatically thrown into the catch or keeper K, and that the latter movement is made by shutting the inside sash so that the meetingrails 2 3 will come in position, as shown in Fig. 1.
The device may be used on car'windows, and for other purposes.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, of the bolt D, provided with stem H and notch F, with the stop n, elevated end M, case A, catch or keeper K, and spring m, as and for the purpose set forth.
