JOHN L. SOHARFF, OF WOMELSDORF, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEAN-POD STRINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,197, dated March 22, 18 81. V I Application filed September 30, 1880. (Model) To all 'ivhom it may concern: I I Be it known that 1, JOHN L. SCHARFF, of Womelsdorf, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have-invented a new and useful Improvement in BeaaPod stringers, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the imprcvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section. l
The object of this invention is to furnish bean-pod stringers, for removing"'the strings or threads from bean-pods and cutting off the ends of the pods, which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in constructing a bean-pod stringer of three bars, forming a clamp, a clamping screw, a block or blocks having semicircular flange, and a curved knife for removing the strings from the pods.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Arepresents a short bar, the rear end of which forms the upper jaw of a clamp. To the lower side of the middle part of the bar A is attached the upper end of a short standard or upright bar, B, to the lower end of which is attached the forward end of a short bar, 0, the barB being of such alength that the edge of a table-top or other suitable support can be inserted between .the bars or jaws A G, where it is secured in place by a hand-screw, D, which passes up through the lower jaw, C, so as to bear against the lower side of the said support.-
To the forward end of the bar A is attached a block, E, to the .outer side of which is attached a second block, F.
Upon the upper part of the outer side of the block F is formed, or to it is attached, a semicircular flange, G, around which is passed a curved knife, H. The ends of the knife H are bent inward, and are clamped between the blocks E F, the said knife H being made of such a length as to leave suflicient space between it and the curved edge of the flange G for the passage of the string of the bean-pod as the said string is shaved oil by drawing the said pod across the edge of the knife H.
If desired, the blocks E F may be made in one piece, the ends of the knife H being clamped between the said block and the end of the bar A. v
To the forward part of the barA, at the rear side of the block E, is hinged the forked upper end of the bar or plate I, in the lower part of which is formed a hole, J, of sufficient size to receive the end of a bean-pod.
Against the rear side of the plate I rests the side of the end ofa bent knife, K, the rear end of which, or a spring-plate attached to the said rear end, is bent into loop form, and is passed through the loop of a staple, L, attached to the bar A-at its point of intersection with the bar B, so as to secure the loop of the springin the angle between the bars A B, with its rear end resting against the forward side of the said bar B.
With this constrnctiomby inserting the end of a bean-pod in the hole J of the plate I and pressing the lower end of the said plate to the rearward, the end of lhe knife K willslide down along the rear side of the said plate I and cut off the end of the pod.
With this construction the strings and ends can be removed from bean-pods very rapidly.
For convenience in manufacturing the machines, the bars A B G and the block E can be made in one piece, and the block F and flange G in another piece.
Having thus fully described myiuvention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bean-pod stringer constructedsubstantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the bars A B C, the clamping-screw D, the block or blocks E, having semicircular flange G, the curved knife H, the hinged plate I, having hole J, and the bent knife K, as set forth. I
2. In a bean-pod stringer, the combination, with the clamp-bars A B G and the clampingscrew D, of the block or blocks E F, having semicircular flange G, and the curved knifeH, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the strings can be readily and quickly removed from bean-pods, as set forth.
JOHN L. SOHARFF.
