amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757-) The invention described herein may bemanufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates generally to canvas coverings and more particularly to attachable and detachable windows and the like for canvas coverings.
All canvas and "other inserts for canvas coverings made according to the teachings of the prior art, and with which I am familiar, have had no suitable means for disposing a window therein, and this has been especially true in a vehicle cover. Military necessity requires that a window be insertable in a covering in a minimum of time.
Because of the rapid movement of military vehicles, insertable parts in a canvas cover should be a part thereof or integral therewith when possible or else they are lost.
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to overcome the above and other defects in insertable windows and the like for canvas covers and it is more particularly an object of my invention to provide an insertable window for a canvas cover which is simple in construction, easy to attach and detach, economical in cost, and efficient in operation.
'Another object of my invention is to provide an insert for a cover which is a part of the cover itself.
Another object of my invention is to provide an insertable window for a canvas cover which may be installed and removed in a minimum of time.
Other objects of my invention will become evident from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view showing an integral canvas insert in the opening in a canvas an integral canvas insert disposed in said open- Figure 6 is a side elevational view in section showing the canvas insert of Figure 5 in a rolled position;
Figure 7 is a side elevational view of the canvas cover shown in Figure '5 with a window inserted in the opening;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view showing interlocking fastening members.
Referring now to the drawing, Figures 1 and 2 show a canvas section I cut on three sides, 2, 4 and 5 and uncut on side 3. Fastening 'members 6, T, 8 and 9 are disposed around the periphery of the opening and fastening members Hi, I l and I2 are disposed on the marginal portions of the canvas section I. When the fastening members 6, 8, 9, H), II and I2 are disengaged, the window 13 with marginal fastening members 14 is inserted in the opening and the fastening members l4 are engaged with the fastening members 6, I, 8 and 9 on the marginal edges of the opening. The fastening member I is sewed or otherwise attached onto a portion of the opening adjacent the uncut side 3.
, Figure 3 is similar to Figure 1 except that the cut-out insert 20 is triangular in shape and has fastening members 2|, 22, 23, 24 on the margins of the cut and on the insert 20 respectively. The uncut side 25 of the opening has disposed adjacent thereto -a fastening member 26 sewed or otherwise attached. When the fastening members 2|, 22, 23 and 24 are disengaged and the insert 20 rolled up, a window insert 21 is inserted and the fastening members 28 on the marginal sides thereof are interlocked with the fastening members 2|, 22 and 26 surrounding the triangular opening.
Figure 5 shows a cut-out opening semi-circular in shape with an integral insert 30 and fastener members 3| and 32 on the marginal edges of th insert 30 and the opening respectively. ,The uncut edge 33 of the opening has disposed adjacent thereto a fastening member 34 sewed or otherwise fastened to the canvas cover 35. When the fastening members 3| and 32 are disengaged, the insert 30 is rolled downwardly as shown in Figure 6. A window 31 is then inserted in the opening as shown in Figure '7 and fastening members 38 around the edges thereof are engaged with fastening members 32 and 34 disposed around the opening.
It will be evident that I provide an insert formed by cutting an opening in a canvas cover but leaving one side of th opening uncut so that the insert may be rolled up and never get lost. By placing fastening members around the cut portion of the opening and an extra fastening member adjacent the uncut portion of the opening, a window or the like may be attached or detached in a minimum of time.
It will be evident that windows I3, 2! or 31 could be permanently attached to fastening members 9, 26 and 34 by means of fastening members It, 28 and 38 respectively or by any other suitable means. The windows [3, 21 and 31 could be rolled and in the cases where windows such as i3 and 31 are attached at the bottom thereof, they could hang from the side of the cover.
Various changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the present invention without departing from the spirit thereof, or. from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A canvas cover having an irregular cut therein wherein a portion f said cover forms a flap and is adapted to be rolled, marginal fastener members on the rollable portion of said cover and along said cut wherein said flap may be disposed in the space from which it was cut and the fastener members interlocked, and an attached fastener member disposed on the side of said opening adjacent th uncut portion thereof to form with the fastener members along said out a series of fastener members disposed completely around said opening adapted to engage fastener members on-a removable closure for said opening.
- 2. A canvas cover having an opening, an integral portion of said cover having a shape the same as said opening, fastener members disposed on the free marginal edges of said integral portion of said cover, fastener members disposed around part of said opening for interlocking engagement with the fastener members on said integral portion of said cover, and an attached fastening member along the remaining part of said opening,- said attached fastening member forming with the other fastening members a series 01' fastening members running completely around said opening adapted to engage the marginal fastening members on a removable closure for said opening.
3. A canvas having a cut opening uncut on one side thereof forming an integral insert, marginal fastener members along the cut portions of said opening and the edges of said insert for interlocking engagement, an attached fastener member disposed on the uncut marginal portion of said opening, said marginal fastener members and said attached fastener member adapted to engage the marginal fastener members on a removable closure for said opening.
