HAND TRAVELING BAG Filed Jan. 13, 1941 any/a E. War/re; Jay/v MMISd/V,
Patented Oct. 14, 1941 HAND TRAVELING BAG David E. White, Cleveland, Ohio, and John M.
Mason, Washington, D. 0.; said Mason assignor to said White Application January 13, 1941, Serial No. 374,288 4 Claims. '(Cl. 19052) This invention relates to hand traveling bags but may be useful with other types of containers, such as physicians bags, trunks, tool kits and receptacles employing hookless fasteners of the sliding or zipper type.
An object of the invention is to provide such a receptacle with a drawer adjacent the bottom portion thereof by which at least a portion.
of the articles in the receptacle are readily accessible.
Another object of the invention is to provide a receptacle, such as a hand traveling bag, which has a slide fastener employing two slide strips, one mounted on the drawer and the other on the receptacle, to thereby reduce the number of parts.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which utilizes the slide or slides of the slide fastener, as drawer pulls in one of their positions.
Other objects will appear hereinafter throughout the specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a traveling bag provided with this invention, the parts being in closed position;
Figure 2 is a similar View with the parts in open position, and
Figure 3 is a detail view of a modified form of the invention.
It is to be understood that the term traveling bag in the specification and claims includes all types of receptacles for containing articles to which ready access is desired.
The numeral I is a traveling bag, and in the present instance is provided with a closing top 2, handle 3, and ends 4 and 5.
The bag is provided with an opening 6 for the reception of a drawer I having a front 8, sides 9, a back I0, and a bottom II.
Extending substantially entirely around the opening 6 is a fastener strip I2 which is discontinuous at I3 at the top center portion thereof Another fastener strip I4, preferably extends entirely around the edges of the front 8 of the drawer.
We have shown two slide fasteners I and I6, but it will be readily appreciated that only a single slide fastener may be used in place of the two shown. These fasteners are of the usual type now commonly used on bags of various kinds and include elements that ride on, or zipp together or unzipp, the two fastener strips I2 and I4, but when they ride off the bag are no longer attached to the bag. The slide or slide fasteners I5 and I6 are then in their unfastened position. It is in this position as shown in Figure 2, that these slide fasteners I5 and I6 may be used as a draw pull for opening and closing the drawer I. These fasteners therefore perform a double function due to the fact that one of the fastener strips is on the traveling bag and the other is on the drawer edge; i. e., they form a fastener means for holding the drawer in its tightly closed position, and for unfastening said drawer, and they provide a drawer pull for opening and closing the drawer.
It is to be understood that although we show a single drawer, on one side of the traveling bag, it is within the scope of thisinvention to provide several of such drawers, and these may be located on one or on both sides, and/or on the ends of the bag. Several drawers also may be provided on the same side of the bag. The opening I3 may be located on the bottom run of the slide strip I2 adjacent the lower edge of the bag, or on one or both of the vertical runs of said slide strip.
In Figure 3 the bag 25 is provided with a drawer I'I similar to that shown in Figure 2. The fastener strip of the bag opening is indicated at I8. The fastener strip I9 extends around the outside front edges of the drawer I1. The usual slides 20 and 2| are provided. As shown in this figure, however, the drawer slide strip has adjacent its central upper portion the curved portions shown at 22 and 23, so that when the slides are moved to their unzipped position, the slides move off of the bag slide strips I8 and into a middle position on the front face of the drawer, as shown. Between the curved portions 22 and 23 is a tongue-shaped portion 24. In the event the front drawer face is provided with a stiffening member, and a separate facing, not shown, the tongue 24 may be either the stiffening member or the drawer face covering.
The term traveling bag in the claims includes other types of containers, such as physicians bags, trunks, tool kits and other receptacles.
The specification and drawing illustrate several embodiments of our invention, but we desire to be limited only to the extent set forth in the claims.
What we claim is:
1. In a traveling bag, an opening in the wall of the said bag, a slide fastener strip extending around the edges of said opening, the ends of the fastener strip at I3 when being unz pped y strip being spaced apart at one side edge of the opening, a drawer supported in said bag with the drawer front fitting in said opening and closing said opening when in closed position. a slide fastener strip attached to the peripheral edges of said drawer front, and a slide constructed and arranged to slide on both of said fastener strips to secure said drawer in said opening in the closed position of said drawer, said slide serving in its unfastened position as a drawer pull.
2. In a traveling bag, an opening in the wall of said bag, a, slide fastener strip extending around the edges of said opening, the end of the strip being spaced apart at one side edge of the.
opening, a drawer supported in said bag with the drawer front fitting in said opening and closing said opening when in closed position, a slide fastener strip attached to the peripheral edges of said drawer front, and a slide constructed and arranged to slide on both of said fastener strips to secure said drawer in said opening in the closed position of said drawer, said slide serving in its unfastened position as a drawer pull, said drawer front slide fastener strip having a curved portion terminating adjacent the medial center of said drawer.
3. In a traveling bag, an opening in the wall of said bag, a slide fastener strip extending around the edges of said opening, the ends of the strip being spaced apart at one side edge of the opening, a drawer supported in said bag with the drawer front fitting in said opening and closing said opening when in closed position, a slide fastener strip attached to the peripheral edges of said drawer front, and a plurality of slides, each constructed to slide on both of said fastener strips to secure said drawer in said opening in the closed position of said drawer, said slides in their unfastened position being unconnected with the said bag slide fastener strip and located be tween the spaced-apart ends of the strip.
4:. In a traveling bag, an opening in the wall of said bag, a slide fastener strip extending around the edges of said opening, the ends of the strip being spaced apart at one side edge of the opening, a drawer supported in said bag with the drawer front fitting in said opening and closing said opening when in closed position, a slide fastener strip attached to the peripheral edges of said drawer front, and a plurality of slides, each constructed to slide on both of said fastener strips to secure said drawer in said opening in the closed position of said drawer, said slides in their unfastened position being unconnected with the said bag slide fastener strip and located be tween the spaced-apart ends of the strip, the said spaced-apart ends of the bag attached strip being located at the central top edge of the bag opening.
