SAFETY-HOOK FOR HARNESS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,123, dated March 22, 1881.

Application filed January 15, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILTON R. THURBER, of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and Improved Safety-Hook for Harness 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the improved hooks detached; Fig. 2, a view showing the same connected to astrap; Fig. 3, a View of a modified form of the hook; Fig. 4, aview showing the manner of attaching said modified form; Fig. 5, a view of still another modification, and Fig. 6 a view showing the same attached.

Similar letters of reference in the several fig ures denote the same parts.

My invention has for'its object to provide an improved safety-hook for use on harness and elsewhere where applicable which shall take the place ofthe ordinary snap-hooks at present in use and be equally effective and reliable, though not nearly so expensive.

To this end my invention consists, essentially, of a plate, body, or main portion having at one end a hook or prong extending back over the body and terminating in an inwardly turned end, and having an opening or slot in front of the end of the hook for the passage of the strap, and also having at the end opposite the hook an outwardly-projecting flange or bridge for the strap.

It also consists in providing an opening in the plate or body, between the end of the hook and the outwardly-projectin g flange or bridge, for the purpose of accommodating the strap when it is bent down by the insertion of the ring or loop to which the hook is'being connected.

It further consists in providing an opening in the flange or bridge for the passage of the strap, all as I will nowproceed to describe.

In the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2, A represents the plate, body, or main portion of the device, having the curved book a, the opening b, for the passage of the strap B, and the outwardlyprojecting flange or bridge 0. The hook is (Model) bent back over the body, and terminates in an inwardly-projecting end, a. This end, it will be observed, is in rear of the strap-opening b, and between said opening and the flange or bridge 0.

In attaching the device the end of the strap is passed up through the slot or opening I), thence under the end of the hook and over the flange or bridge 0, where it may be secured by a buckle, as shown in Fig. 2, or in any other suitable manner. When the strap is pulled tight the portion between the opening I) and the flange or bridge bears against the end of the hook, leaving an entirely inclosed space, d, within the hook, as shown in full lines, Fig.2.

To attach the device to a loop or ring, such as D, Fig. 2, the strap is pressed inward, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and so as to admit the ring under the end of the hook and into the space d. This being done, the strap resumes its place again against the end of the hook, thus completing the connection. I preferably slot or cut away the body at e for the accommodation of the strap when pressed down, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and to render it easier for the ring to be admitted. I also preferably make an opening, 0, in the flange or bridge 0, for the passage of the strap, in order to hold the device more securely.

In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modified form, in which the opening in the bridge or flange is omitted, the device being in other respects the same.

Another modified form is shown in Fig. 5. In this but one slot or opening is made in the plate or bodynamely, that for the passage of the strap-and the flange or bridge is not formed by bending the plate or body abruptly at right angles, as in the other forms of the invention, but by curving the body upward, so that its termination shall be as high, at least, as the point of the hook, and thus form a bridge.

I claim as my invention- 1. A safety-hook consisting of a plate, body, or main portion having at one end a hook or prong extending back over the body and terminating in an inwardly-turned end, and having an opening or slot in front of the end of the hook for the passage of the strap, and also hav- I projeoting flange or bridge for the accommodation of the strap when pressed inward by the entering ring or loop, substantially as described.

3. The safety-hook herein described, having the slotted body, the hook, the flange or bridge, and the opening in the bridge for the passage of the strap, as set forth.
