I DUSTER Filed April 17, 1943 y A 7J g. Z
Patented Dec. 18, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE DUSTER Valdemar A. Potholm, Hartford, Conn.
Application April 17, 1943, Serial No. 483,509
1 Claim.
My invention relates to the class of devices that are employed for removing dust and dirt from surfaces of various shapes, and an object of my invention, among others, is the provision of a duster in which dust and dirt may be eiectively removed not only from comparatively plain surfaces, but also from surfaces more or less inaccessible to ordinary types of dusters.
One form of a duster embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved duster.
Figure 2 is a view on slightly enlarged scale in central lengthwise section on a plane denoted by the broken line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 5 denotes the body of my improved duster that is preferably round in shape and of a size to fit Within the hand.- of the user, this body being provided with a chamber 6. The otherwise open end of the chamber is closed by a head or base 'l of a broom or duster 8, this head comprising a plate 9 and a compact mass l0 of brush or broom fibers usually treated with an adhesive to render the mass solid.
The body 5 is composed of rubber or similar exible material which may be readily compressed to reduce the area of the chamber 6 and thereby expel air from within the chamber.
A nozzle Il extends from the body 5, in the preferred form and as shown herein, this nozzle being an integral part of said body but of a different character, it being vulcanized to an extent to render it more stiff than the body. This nozzle is tapered from a larger diameter at its junction with the body to a smaller diameter at its tip whereby the latter may be readily inserted into crevices for the removal of dust and dirt therefrom by a blast or blasts created by compressing the Walls of the chamber 6.
A passage l2 extends from the chamber 6 through the nozzle to the outer end or tip I3 through which passage blasts of air are forced by collapsing of the Walls of the chamber 6, the head l0 including the plate 9 resisting the pressure thus created and causing the air to be forced out of the tip I3.
I claim:
A brush comprising an elongated body portion, said body portion being enlarged at its lower 'end to provide a compressible air chamber, a partition in said chamber extending transversely of the longitudinal axis of said body portion and spaced inwardly of the lower end thereof, and a brush head having its mounting end occupying the entire space within said enlarged end of the body portion below said partition and in contact with said partition, the upper end of said body portion constituting a handle and |being of reduced diameter relative to said enlarged lower end and tapered toward its upper end and having a passage therethrough opening at lthe upper end thereof and in communication with said compressible air chamber whereby upon compression of vsaid chamberecl portion of said body a jet of air will be emitted from the reduced end of the body portion to enable the brush to be used as a duster blower.
