Description

(No Model.)
WM; FREEMAN. Bale Tie.
Patented March 22,1881.
fare/ 178] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. FREEMAN, OF MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,093, dated March 22, 1881..
Application filed February 24, 1881. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Cotton-Tie Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cotton-tie buckles; and the object of my invention is to provide an easy and elfectual means of fastening the bands around cottonbales.
The following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents the buckle detachedfrom the band. Fig. 2 shows the band adjusted to the buckle on the cotton-bale.
A in Fig. 2 represents the buckle, C the slot at one of the corners of the buckle, B the opening in buckle, and D D the band. E is a strengthening-rib.
In using this buckle the upper part of the band D is inserted through the opening B and bent in the usual manner. The lower part of the band D is bent at the proper point and inserted through the slot 0, thereby fastening the band strongly and closely around the bale.
The advantages gained by having the slot at one of the corners running in or about a diagonal direction are the facility of inserting vantage I derive by having the slot in one of 5 the corners is that by not having to turn the buckle or twist the band in connecting them I am enabled to take up almost all the slack and prevent the undue expansion of the bale upon being released from the press.
I am Well aware that buckles with slots at the side and in or about the center of the bar have been used. I therefore do not lay claim to such; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cotton-tie buckle having a slot, 0, diagonal to the aperture B, in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
2. A cotton-tie buckle having a slot, (J, cutting the buckle at the corner for the insertion of the band, as herein set forth.
' WILLIAM M. FREEMAN.
