N PETERS, PHOTD-LITHOGRAPNER FRANCIS M. LOGUE, OF "IOKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No 205,882, dated July 9,1879; application filed January 24, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. LoGUE, a
resident of the city of Vicksburg, county of \lVarren, and State of Mississippi, have in- "ented a certain new and useful- Improvement in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the production of a tie-plate or buckle, which is more especially intended to be employed in conjunction with a band-tightener, for securing the ends of bands surrounding bales of cotton or other products.
The invention is clearly shown in the accompanying drawing, whereon- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is avertical sect-ion, showing the manner in which the free end of the band is inserted therein; and Fig. 3, a side view of the device, with the opposite ends of a bale-band connected therewith.
A represents the tie-plate, which is made rectangular in form, with a similarly-shaped interior slot, B. This plate is somewhat thicker at one end than at the other, and is provided at its thinnest end with a single bar or bandseat, 0, and at its opposite heaviest end with two bars or band-seats, d d, between which is a space of sutficient size to admit of the tree passage of a bale-band, as shown at 0.
At about one-third (more or less) distant from the lightest end the sides of the device are provided with projecting lugs or pins ff, for securing thereto an eccentric motion during certain stages of the tightening and tying process.
The application of the invention is as follows: One end of the band is first bent around the bar 0, the opposite end of the said band is next passed around the bale and up through the space between the bars cl (1, the buckle for this purpose being previously turned upward, as shown in Fig. 2.
The tightening apparatus (not shown in the drawing, as it forms the subject of a separate patent) is then made to engage the pins f of the device, and that portion of the band which has just been passed through the same. Power is then applied thereto, and as the band is tightened the buckle is, by reason of its eccentric journals, tilted forward, so as to gripe that end of the band which is inserted between its double bars, the gripe increasing as the band is tightened, until finally, when all the slack has been drawn in, its hold is such as to upset the buckle the moment the bale is released from pressure, after which the projecting end of the band is clipped oft and the remaining portion bent back over the outer bar, as shown.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A'tie-plate provided at one end with a single bar, 0, and at the opposite end with two bars, d d, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A bale-tie provided with cross-bars c d d and side pins f f, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
F. M. LOGUE.
In presence of- J. WV. M. HARRIs, T. J. ROACH.
