HENRY BEAGLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAM E-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent *No. 239,017, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed September 30, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BEAGLE, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania,
have invented new and useful Improvements Referring to the accompanying drawings,
A A represent a pair of hames to which my improvements are shown applied.
B represents a hook secured to the lower end of one of the hames and forming the fastening device for that side.
Greprcsents a lever hinged to the lower end of the other haine. This lever is perfectly straight when viewed from the edge, so as to be in line with the hame to which it is secured. At its upper free end itis formed with a hook, I), which has a nub or bent end, E, which enters through the plate F into the wood of which the hame is made. Aslight distance above the hinged end of the lever O is secured to it a link, G, which is of such size that the end of the hame can pass into it. To this link is fastened a short chain, H, sufficiently long to reach to hook B and leave some slack.
The operation is as follows: The hames being applied to the collar in the usual manner, the hook B is engaged with the chain H and the leverG turned backward or upward against the side of the hame, the nub E entering the opening provided for it. If desired, the lever may then be secured against danger of accidental displacement by means of a fasteningpin, K, provided for that purpose.
The advantages of this fastener over other devices for that purpose consist largely in the simplicity of its construction and the strength and security it affords. The lever, being straight, is easily forgethand when in place rests snugly along the side of the haine where its end enters, thus avoiding making an objectionable projection. ened, so that it is in no danger of becoming loosened when draft is exerted, The chain being attached to the lever makes a more handy arrangement than if attached to the other hame, as it brings all of the fastening except the immovable hookB on one side. The hinge of the lever is a regular knuckle-hinge, which imparts greater strength than a hinge formed of two eyes, and permits the leverage on the lever to be exerted in a straight line.
I am aware that hames have heretofore been coupled by means of a chain and lever, and hence I do not.broadly claim such coupling as my invention.
ing-pin K, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I It is in this position firmly fast-- have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of September, 1880.
HENRY BEAGLE.
