Description

PATENTED MAR. 22, 1904.
J. ORUTHERS.
DRAFT ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 28, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
I 6 I I I I I UNITED STATES Patented March 22, 1904.
PATENT FFICE.
JOHN CRUTHERS, OF NACO, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 755,459, dated March 22, 1904. Application filed December 28, 1903. Serial No- 186,'766. (No model.)
To to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CRUTHERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naco, in the county of Cochise and Territory of Arizona, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Attachments for Harness and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a draft attachment for hames that will be simple in construction, effective in operation, and both strong and durable; and it consists in such an attachment constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of the blank from which the clip-plate is formed; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the complete attachment, showing the hame in dotted lines; Fig. 3, a side elevation, partly in section.
In the accompanying drawings, 00 in Fig. 1 represents the blank from which the clip-plate is formed by bending the part 00 over parallel to the part y, which will form the two side walls A B, (shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings,) and the extremity 2 of the blank is bent to form the eye C for attaching it to the hame, as shown in dotted lines.
Between the side walls A B of the clip-plate is pivotally held a hook D by means of a suitable pivot-pin a, said hook havingan inclined opening 6, with which the trace-link E engages, and an inwardly-extending locking projection c. The inner portion or end of the link Eis elliptical in cross-section, as shown at d in Fig. 3 of the drawings, so that when in substantially a horizontal position (shown in Figs. 2 and 3) the hook D is held stationary and prevented from rising upon its pivot, thereby forming a perfect lock for the link. The elliptical form of the end of the link acts as a cam-wedge, and the moment any upward pressure is brought on the hook the greater the pressure the more secure the link will be held from rising to a position for the accidental disengagement of the link. When it is desired to detach the link from the hook, the link is brought to substantially a vertical or upright position, which will bring the narrowest part of the link between the walls A B and the wall of the opening I), when the hook can be readily raised to a position whereby the link may be conveniently removed.
It will be noticed that the slot Z) in the hook D extends beyond the front edge of the clipplate, and the cam-wedge of the link E, as indicated at d, is located in said slot, and its greatest dimension being substantially equal to the distance from the front edge of the clipplate to the end of the slot when the link is in substantially a horizontal position, as shown in the drawings, a perfect lock against the accidental disengagement with the hook is the result.
The clip-plate and hook maybe of any desirable construction so long as the slot in the hook extends beyond the front end of the clip-plate, the most essential feature of the invention residing in the peculiar construction of the link.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A draft attachment comprising a. suitable clip-plate, a slotted hook pivoted thereto, the slot of said hook extending beyond the front edge of the clip-plate, and a link adapted to engage or disengage the hook, the rear end of said link being elliptical in cross-section to form a cam-wedge, the same being located in the slot of the hook and its greatest dimension being substantially equal to the distance from the front edge of the clip-plate to the end of the slot in the hook, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN CRUTHERS.
