NPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. VAN SYOKEL, OF WASHINGTON, D. C., ASSIGNOR TO HANNAH SfVAN SYOEL AND ROBERT S. MANNING, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,995, dated March 15, 1881.
Application lezl November 19, 1880. (No model.) f
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, CHARLEs B.VAN SYCKEL, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottles and other Hollow Glassware, which is especially adapted for nursing-bottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinventiou, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying two sheets of drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of one of my improved nursing-bottles. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of one of the protecting rings -or bands detached from the bottle. Fig. 4 is a side view of the bottom cap. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the protectin g-rin gs detached from the bottle. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bottom cap detached, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view ofthe bottle without the pro` tecting-ringand cap.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-Vv sponding parts in all the figures.
The object of my invention is to protect bottles, and especially nursing-bottles, against breakage; and to this end it consists in the application to the bottle of a bottom cap and ring or band, made of rubber or other elastic material, which said band and cap are provided with knobs or projections of the same material, substantially as hereinafter more fullyl set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents a nursing-bottle made of white or colored glass. This bottle is made with two or more circumferential grooves or ndentations, B, as shown in Fig. 7. i'
D is a ring or baud, made of rubber or other` f suitable elastic material, which is provided with a row or series of knobs or studs, E and O is the cap or protector for the bottom, which has a circumferential row of knobs or studs,
F, along its upper or lower edge, or both. The band D and cap O are held in place upon the bottle by their own tension, operating in conjunction with the circumferential grooves 5o B, which prevent them from slippiugloff or becoming accidentally displaced.
If the bottle is dropped on the door, the studded bottom cap, C, and band D will take up the shock and etfectually prevent breakage the studs or knobs E and F rebounding and preventing injury to the glass vesseln Itis obvious that one or more rings or bands D may be used, and also that the bottom cap,
O, may be of greater orlesser width, according 6o to the style of bottle.
It may also be found advantageous to provide cap O with studs or knobs 011 the bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, to still further increase its efficiency as a protector.
It is also obvious that my improvement is notlimited to any particular style of bottle, or any particular shape, and that, if desired, the rings or bands D may be dispensed with and the bottle used with a bottom cap only.
Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A nursing-bottle having annular indentations or channels B, and provided with one 75 or more studded elastic bands, D, and a studded bottom cap, O, as set forth.
2. The protecting elastic ring or bandD,for bottles or hollow glassware, provided with the studs or projections E, as set forth.
3. The protecting elastic bottom cap, C, for bottles or hollow glassware, provided with one or more rows of studs or projections, F, as set forth.
In'testimony that I claim the'foregoing as 85 my own I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
