R. MURPHY.
Rotary Uhuru.
No. 238,519. Patented March 8,1881. A
UNTTED STATES PATENT Finca.
ROBERT MURPHY, OF OANISTEO, NEW YORK.
ROTARY CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lette-rs Patent No. 238,519, dated March 8, 1881.
' Application nien september 9,1880. (Model.)
erence being had to the accompanying draw-V ings, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of the upper part of the churn, cutting through the middle ot' the cover-fastening device; Fig. 2, a side view of the upper part of the churn, showing` a front view ol' the cover-fastening device; Figs. 3, 4, and 5, views of the parts composing the cover-fastening device in detail.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
A is a cover of my rotary churn, and is composed of the two parts A and B. The part A is preferably made of wood, and is so arranged as to snugly tit within the rim B of the cover, which lits over the head ot' the churn and rests upon an elastic cushion placed in the top ot the staves, thereby keeping the cask in an air and water tight condition.
Firuxly secured to each side of the cask isa plate, C, having upon its upper end a projection, H, to which is pivoted the bifurcated end of a lever, E. This lever also has formed nearits upper end two projecting arms, arranged at right angles toA the long arm ot' the lever, and so arranged that their outer ends bear 'against the connecting-bar Gr otn the triangle D, and by this means always keep the lever in the center of the plate C. This lever is also so constructed that, in case ot any irregularityin the metal rim B, the center at a bears firmly against the connecting-bar G, so that when power is applied to lever E the bar G will give sufficiently to allow the said lever to pass beyond the dead-point, thereby locking all the parts trml y together. The triangle D has formed upon its upper end a hook, g, for the purpose of keeping the cover always in position. I
F is the strip of elastic material set into the top of the staves of the cask, and upon which the cover rests.
lt is evident that when not in use the lever and triangle rest against the side ot' the cask.
When the cask is ready for use the triangle is raised until the hooked end engages the rim of the cover. The lever also is raised, and when the power is applied to the lever it is forced into the position shown in the drawings, thereby locking all the parts lirmly t0- gether.
Having thus described my iuvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a rotary churn or other vessel, a cover-fastening device composed of a lever, E, hinged to a bearing-plate, C, and provided with lateral arms, a hook, D g, having separated hinge-bearings, as described, and a slight elastic connecting-bar, G, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein specified. y
2. In ,combination with the hooks D g D g and their tightening-levers E E and G Gr, the concave hanged metallic rim B surrounding the cover, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
