Benjamin Schoenberg, Corona, N. Y.
Application 26, 1943, Serial No. 488,521
Claims.
The present; invention relates to new'and useful improvements in switch operating devices and more particularly it pertains to devices for operating switches of electric light fixtureswhich fixtures are located in inaccessible positions of which the well-known ceiling lamp is one example.
It is the object of'the invention to provide a novel device which may be attached to a ceiling fixture without altering in any respect the fixture.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device which is simple in construction and relatively cheap of manufacture. 7
It is a further object of the invention so to construct the device that when once it is in position, it will be rigidly maintained therein and yet may be removed without damage to anyof the parts of the device or to the fixture.
It is a still further object of the invention so to construct a device of the aforementioned type as to render it adjustable, thereby to render it adaptable to electric fixtures of various sizesand contours.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the nature thereof is better understood and reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing and the following specification .and claims wherein is illustrated and described one successful embodiment of the invention.
Referringto the drawing,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevatio illustrating the invention,
Figure 21s a fragmentary top plan view partly in section, and;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale, the view being also partlybroken away.
In the drawing, the body member is preferably formed of two members 36 and 31 which are secured together in face to face relation by means of a bolt, rivet or the like 36.
Each of these members 36 and 31 are of substantially rectangular form and each is provided upon one end with a laterally disposed electric fixture engaging flange-like extension 39, preferably formed integrally with its respective member. The corners of these flange-like extensions 39 may be slightly bent as at 40 to provide electric fixture engaging members which bite into the electric fixture at points both above and below and upon opposite sides of the pull chain opening 4i thereof.
Extending through the body member, see Figures 2 and 3, there is a passageway 42 and slidably mounted in said passageway 42, there is a hook member 43, best illustrated in Figure 3.
The passageway 42 maybe formed by providing a channel inthe meeting faces of the members 36 and 31 which channels register with each other when said members are secured together in face to face relation as previously described. 6 Each end of the hook member. 43 extends beyond its respective end of the body member and each of its ends is formed with a hook, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
. The hook upon the inner end of the hook member 43, that is the end which is adjacent the electric fixture, is designated-44 and is adapted to engage over the defining edge of the pull chain opening 4| of the fixture.
The hook upon the outer end ofthe hook memberv 43'is designated 45 and the purpose of this hook will hereinafter. appean; s
As best illustrated in Figures land 2, thereis a plate 46 mounted in contacting relation with the outer. face of the member 31. This plate-46 has an open slot 41 for receivingan extended portion 46 of the bolt or rivet 38, heretoforementioned.
The plate 46 isalso provided with an elongated closedv slot 49 for the reception of a bolt or rivet 50 which also passes through the two members 36 and 3|, which form the body member. By means of the ,slots 41 and. 49 and the bolts or rivets48 and 5D, the plate 46 is slidably, mounted upon the body member for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent. H The sliding plate 46 is provided upon its: outer end with 'two lugs .52 and 53 which extend laterally in opposite directions to each other. The lug 52 is disposed below the lug 53 and the outer hook 45 of the hook memb-er43 embraces this lug as best illustrated in Figure 3.
The upper lug 53 is provided with an internally threaded opening and having threaded engagement with said opening there is a threaded bolt or screw 54.
The lugs 52 and 53 may be formed by cutting a slot in the outer end of the plate 46 and bending the portions upon opposite sides of the slot in opposite directions.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that by reason of its attachment to the sliding plate 46, the hook member 43 will be moved therewith in order to move the hook 44 thereof into and out of holding engagement with the edge of the pull chain opening of the fixture, and the manner in which this is accomplished will now be described.
It will be noted that the lug 53 is positioned slightly above the bolt or rivet 50 and is slightly angularly disposed relative to the transverse axis of the sliding plate 46.
This angular position of the lug 53 permits of the engagement of the inner end of the threaded bolt or screw 54' with the head of the bolt or rivet 50, heretofore mentioned. Obviously, as the bolt or screw 54 is turned up and its inner end engages the head of the bolt or rivet 50, the plate 46 will be moved to the left in the drawing.
This movement of the plate 48 exerts a pull upon the hook member 43 causing its hook 44 to move into holding engagement with the edge of the pull chain opening 4|.
holding engagement with the outer face of the fixture thereby firmly securing the devicein place upon the fixture.
To remove the device from the fixture, it is only necessary to back off the bolt or 'screw, 54, leaving the sliding plate 46 free for sliding movement upon the bolts or rivets 48 and 50.
By slidably mounting the hook member 43 upon the body member, it is obvious that the adjustment thus provided renders the device readily attachable to fixtures of various sizes and contours.
An operating lever 60 is mounted upon the bolt or rivet 50 and is operatively connected to the pull chain. I
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a device which is simple in construction, easy of attachment, and highly efilcient for the purpose intended.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters *Patent of the United States, is:
1. A pull chain operating device for electric fixtures having a pull chain and a pull chain opening therein, comprising a rigid body member,
Such action also forces the biting teeth of the body member into of the pull chain opening and for maintaining it in holding engagement therewith to cooperate with said body member while the latter bears against the fixture so as to retain the device in functioning position, and pull chain operating means pivotally mounted upon the body member and operatively connected to the pull chain of the fixture.
3. A pull chain operating device for electric fixtures having a pull chain and pull chain opening therein, comprising a rigidbody member, a plate slidably mounted upon the body member, a hook member slidably mounted upon the body member for holding engagement with a portion of the edge of the pull chain opening of the fixture,
means for operatively connecting the sliding a hooked member adjustably mounted upon the body member for holding engagement with a portion of the edge of the pull chain opening of the fixture, means for securing the hook member in adjusted holding engagement with the edge of said pull chain opening to cooperate with hooked member slidably mounted upon the body member for holding engagement with a portion of the edge of the pull chainopening, means for imparting sliding movement to the hook member to move it into holding engagement with the edge plate and the hook member together for sliding movement in unison, means for imparting sliding movement to the sliding plate thereby to move the hook member into holding engagement with the edge of the pull chain opening, and pull chain operating means carried by the rigid body memher and operatively connected to the pull chain of the fixture.
4. A pull chain operating device for electric fixtures having a pull chain and a pull chain opening therein, comprising a rigid body member, a hooked member adjustably mounted upon the member for holding engagement with a portion of the pull chain opening of the fixture, means for securing the hook member in adjusted holding engagement with said pull chain opening to cooperate with said body member while the latter bears against the fixture so as to retain the device in functioning position, and pull chain operating means carried by the body member and operatively connected to the pull chain of the fixture.
5. A pull chain operating device for an electric fixture having a pull chain and a pull chain opening, comprising a rigid body member, a plate having a lu means slidably connecting the plate with said lbOdY member for adjustment withrespect thereto, an attaching member slidably supported by said body member and engaged with a said lu'g whereby the attaching member is movable with the plate, means cooperatingwith a part of said' first means to urge the plate and the attaching member in a direction so that the attaching member is adjusted in conjunction with the body member with the body member lbearing against the fixture on the outside thereof while the attaching member is engaged with the edge portion of the fixture at said opening thereby detachably retaining the device in functioning position, and pull chain operating means on said part of said first means and engaged with the pull chain to operate the latter.
