Description

(No Model.)
T. HARTUNG. Invoice 0r Scrap Book.
No. 238,233. Patented March 1, I881.
N. PETERS. PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE HARTUNG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO ERNEST J. NOLIN, OF SAME PLACE.
INVOICE OR SCRAP BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,233, dated March 1, 1881.
Application filed December 4, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE HARTUNG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invoice or Scrap Books, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
In the drawings, Figure lis an end or edge view of a closed book embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal cross-section of the open book; Fig.3, a like representation of the back-piece detached and Fig. 4, a perspective of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
In the drawings, A represents the cover of the book.
B is the back-piece. The back-piece consists of the under piece, C, made ofcanvas or other suitable flexible material, ofthe ribs D D, made of straw-board, paper, pasteboard, wood, or other suitable material arranged at suitable distances apartlongitudinally along the piece C, and ofthe top piece, E, made of cloth, leather, or other suitable material applied adhesively to piece C and to the ribs D D, all substantially as indicated in the drawings.
F F are the leaves, which are arranged together in separate sections a a, each independent of the other. The leaves in each section should be connected to each other along the line of folding by means of stitching, which may be done either with thread or wire, or they may be connected in any other wellknown or suitable way. The sections a, a, I
5 place between the ribs D D, and each channel or groove between the ribs contains a section, as shown. The sections may be secured in their places between the ribs either by means of glue or by sewing, or in any other suitable way.
A flexible back-piece capable of being applied with facility to the cover A is thus produced, and the sections a a may be readily (No model.)
applied to the back-piece, and each section will be positively separated from the other v the cover.
It will be perceived from the foregoing description, and by reference to the drawings, that the ribs D D being separated, as shown, 5 do not interfere with the proper flexibility of the back-piece B, but tend to render it firm, strong, and durable. It will also be perceived that the ribs 1) D take the place of the stubs which usually form a part of the leaves of the sections, and are employed to keep the sections apart along theirline of connection with the back-piece. By this means I avoid the necessity of constructing such stubs and keep the sections positively and firmly separated at their bases. This is the essential feature of my invention. Besides, the book may be spread open more flatly than books of this class can ordinarily be without injury. The construction of the book is also greatly facili- 7o tated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in an invoice or scrap book, of the cover A, the flexible back-piece B, consisting of the under piece, C, and. top piece, E, the ribs D 1), arranged at intervals apart between the pieces B and E, and the sections a a, arranged between the ribs D D, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
THEODORE HARTUNG.
