UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
FANN Y O. BATGHELLER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DEVICE FOR RESTORING FACIAL SYMMETRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,948, dated February 22, 1881.
Application filed October 8, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FANNY G. BATCHELLER, of Boston, in-the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Restoring Facial Symmetry, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a spring or springs which are so made that they may be readily.
attached to or connected with the teeth. The spring part or parts press against the misshapen portion of the face or lips, and have a tendency to restore them to the proper symmetrical shape.
The device is to be used by persons whose face's have from any cause, either natural or artificial, become misshapen.
The device which I have adopted for an illustration of my invention is especially adapted for restoring the mouth-lines to their proper position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view showing the same in use.
Let A B represent the two prongs of a spring, united at O, the end 0 0 being so curved as to fit about and between the teeth; or, in some cases, it may be attached to a sin- (No model.) 7
gle tooth. If one angle alone of the mouth is out of place, then but a single one of my devices need be used; but if both angles are drawn down or out of place, then two should be used.
It is obvious that the form and size of my device must be changed to suit each individual case.
The use of my device for restoring the angles of the month is illustrated in Fig. 3, the prongs A B being so bent and adjusted that they will press in the direction to which it is desired to move the lips, the leading idea of my invention being to interpose between the teeth, using the teeth as a buttress, a spring, the resilience of which shall act, through a proper-shaped part, to press the misshapen feature to its normal symmetry.
I claim as my inventionln'a device for restoring facial symmetry, the combination of the spring A B with the holding device 0 0, adapted to grasp the teeth or be secured thereon, operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
FANNY (J. BATGHELLER. Witnesses:
