4 Claims. (Cl. 2291.5)
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in containers and more particularly to a paper cup having a handle whereby it may be supported or carried in use,'the handle being formed of a piece of material separate from that from which the body of the cup is formedand adapted to be secured to the cup body by adhesive or in other desired manner- The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a paper container or cup having a handle secured to the side of the body thereof,
the handle being formed from a blank of material which normally conforms to the curvature of the body, adapting the containers or cups to be nested, but including members which may be bent outwardly from the body of the cup to'provide finger-engaging portions with openings through which a finger may be inserted.
Another object of the invention consists in the provision of a handle for a paper container or cup formed from a blank of material which is cut to provide a portion which may be secured to the side of the container or cup by adhesive or in other manner, and members which normally lie fiat against the outer face of the cup body but which may be bent outwardly to provide finger-' engaging portions having openings through which may be inserted, the openings having rounded edge portions, to engage the finger inserted through the openings and forming a smooth surface without danger of cutting the finger or causing discomfiture thereto.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention. consists in the novel details of construction, and arrangement of parts, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the'invention, as they now appear to me, it will be understood that such changes may be made as will fall within the scope of theappended claims.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the handle in its normal position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the fingerengaging portions of the handle bent outwardly from the cup body for use.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation at right angles to Fig. 2 showing the finger-engaging portions bent outwardly with respect to the body.
Fig. 4 is a top plan of the container or cup with the handle as arranged in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmental section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Fig. '7 is a plan of the handle blank.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing a slightly modified form of handle; and
Fig. 9 is a fragmental horizontal section .through a container or cup employing the handle of the modified form, the blank from which the handle is made being shown in Fig. 8.
I am, of course, aware that paper containers or cups have been provided with handles which are of particular advantage when the container or cupcontains hot liquids. In some instances the-handles are formed from the blank of material which forms the body of the cup or con tainer and in other instances the handle is formed as a separate member and secured to the body. However, I am not aware of any container or cup, either of paper or other material, embodying a handle formed in the manner in which my handle is formed and willbe claimed. My improved form of handle is formed from asingle blank of material'which is cut to provide a portion adapted engaging portions, the finger-engaging portions normally lying flat against the outer surface of the body conforming to the curvature thereof. The portion which is secured to the body of the container or cup includes an elongated vertical part and laterally extending ears thereby providing a relatively large. area secured to the container or cup body and adapted for strain either vertically or circumferentlally of the body. There is particular advantage in having the handle I the handle indicated generally at b. The body includes the tapered side wall I and bottom 2, the bottom 2 being positioned within the smaller end of the side wall and is engaged by the rolled edge :3 formed around the lower or smaller end of the side wall. The open end of the side wall is formed with the outwardly turned bead r flange 4, forming a lip portion for drinking from the cup. The side wall i is preferably formed from a blank of paper shaped as shown ,in'the usual well-known manner. The paper may be of the'desired thickness or weight.
Thehandlegb is formed from a blank of paper v or the shape shown more particularly in Fig. 7
of the drawingsfland is formed with the cuts 5,
' which form the ears 6, extending laterally from i the central vertical portion 1. The cuts also asrauo the members I 5 are further curved to provide and having its overlapped ends secured together form or provide the members 8 which are adapted'to be bent on the lines 9 to provide finger- "engaging portions with openings Ill through c which a finger of the user may be inserted. The
blank shown in F'ig. '7 is adapted to be secured to the body off-the container or cup, or more particularly. theside wall thereof, by adhesive,
it being understood that it is the verticalportion 1 and the laterally extending ears 8 which connected to the wall of the container or cup.
Q Q In other .words the members 8 are not secured .to the side wall, although they normally contact therewith and are curved to conform to the curvature thereof shownv more particularly 'inlFigs. 1 and 6 of the drawings. desired to use the handle the members 8 will be bent outwardly on the lines 9, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2, S and 4 of the drawings to form finger-engaging portions and a finger When it is receive the adhesive and are the parts directly the shoulders 2| similar to the shoulders ll, shown in Figs. 3 and 7 of the drawings and beneath which a finger will be engaged in the same manner as shown in Fig. 3. The elongated portion l3, as well as the laterally extending ears I! of the modified form of handle, will be secured to the body 22 of the container or cup by adhesive or in other suitable manner, while the members l5 will not be attached to the body although whenin normal position lying flat against the body and conforming to the curvature thereof, When the container or cup is to be used the members It will be bent outwardly, as shown more particularly in Fig. 9 of the drawings, to provide the finger-engaging portions.
From the above detailed description it will b seen that I have provided a novel form of handle for a; paper container or cup embodyingthe advantages previously brought out.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a paperdrinking cup.
a handle therefor, said handle beingfashioned of I flexible material and all portions thereof normally positioned gainst the exterior surface of extending longitudinally of the cup, and oppositely disposed portions adapted to be bent outwardly from said fixed portion contoured to present horizontally aligned spaced openings for finget-engagement in supporting the cup and contents, and said oppositely disposed portions below said openings being notched to provide circumferentially spaced engaging portions for ilnger-engagement to resist forward tipping of the cup under the weight of its contents as well as lateral tipping thereof.
2. In combination with a paper drinking cup. a handle therefor, said handle being fashionedof flexible material and all portions thereof normally positionedagainst the exterior surface f the cup and conforming thereto to enable nest: ing when stacked, the handle having a fixed portion extending longitudinally of the cup, andoppositely disposed portions adapted to be bent proximately parallel substantially spaced relationship and contoured to present horizontally container is in use a, finger of the user will be engaged beneath the shoulders as also shown in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings I have illustrated a handle blank of slightly different form than that disclosed in Fig.- '7' oi. the drawings; although of the same general shape or outline. In this modified form of the invention the blank is out on the lines l2 to form the central elon-. gated part l3, the laterally extending ears I4 and finger-engaging members 18. the fingerengaging members being adapted to be bent on the lines l6 as will be later brought out and as ings. The members ii are pressed to provide around their outer edges an offset flange ll and around a portion of the cuts I! a groove l8, forming a curved edge ID to be engaged by a finger inserted through the openings 28, as shown more particularly in Fig. 9 of the drawings, when the members are bent into their outwardly extending positions. The edges of aligned correspondingly spaced opening th h which a finger may be passed in supporting the cup and contents on said finger, and said oppositely disposed portions below said openings being notched to provide circumferentially spaced engaging portions for another finger to resist forward tipping of the cup under the weight of its contents a well as lateral tipping thereof, and e edges of said oppositely disposed portions above said openings constituting thumb-engaging portions. t
3. A paper drinking cup handle formed of flexible-material, comprising a base portion attached to the side wall of a cup and oppositely disposed portions extending outwardly from said base portion disposed inapproximately parallel relationship and substantially spaced apart, said outwardly disposed portions possessing horizontally aligned openings adapted for finger-engagement and notched in their edges below said opening to provide spaced engaging portions adapted to be engaged by a finger at separated points defined by the spacing of said outwardly extending portions.
4. A paper drinking cup handle formed of flexlble material. comprising a base portion attached to the side wall 01' a cup and c ppositely disposed portions extending outwardly from said base portiOn disposed in approximately parallel relationship and substantially spaced apart, said outwardly disposed portions possessing horizontally aligned openings adapted for finger-amazement m a and notched in their edzes below said openings to provide spaced engaging portions adapted to be engaged by a time: at separated points defined by the spacing of said outwardly extending :portions. finger-engaging portions or the handle being provided with transversely oflset portions of the material thereof forming smooth, widened contactinz edges for presentation to the finger.
