Description

Dec. 25, 1956 E. KAYAT 2,775,382
HANDLE ATTACHMENT FOR PAPER CUPS Filed Oct. 5, 1954 INVENTOR Elias Kagat BY M 8744, 216! #M ATTORNEYS United fitates Patent HANDLE ATTACHNIENT FOR PAPER CUPS Elias Kayat, Willow Cove, Ontario, Canada, assignor to Continental Can Company, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application October 5, 1954, Serial No. 460,469
1 Claim. (Cl. 229--1.5)
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a handle attachment for paper cups and more particularly a handle attachment which may be used in connection with hot drink cups.
It is a common practice to provide a handle attachment on paper cups by cutting a blank of paper so as to form two handles separated from each other by a supporting strip to which the handles are hingedly connected and wherein the supporting strip and the cut-outs left in the blank in forming the handles are adhesively secured to the outer face of the cups. The supporting strip of the present attachment terminates at the upper hinge connection for the handles. The strain on the adhesive con necting the upper end of the strip to the cup when the cup is filled with a hot beverage often breaks the adhesive connection and permits the cup to tilt on its handles with a resulting spill of the beverage.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improvement in the attachment for the handles of the paper cup that will prevent the rupturing of the adhesive connection between the upper end of the supporting strip and the cup when the cup is filled with a hot beverage.
Another object of the invention is to extend the supporting strip upwardly above the upper hinge connection between the handles and the strip and provide said extension With laterally extending straps which are adhesively connected to the cup.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings which show one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which handles and a support for the handles may be cut.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a cup with the improved handles and attaching means therefor secured to the cup, the handles being folded into engagement with the walls of the cup for nesting purposes.
Figure 3 is a perspective view similar to Figure 2 but showing the handles as swung on their hinge connection with the supporting means to a position extending substantially radially outwardly from the cup.
The present invention has to do with a handle attaching means for paper cups. In Figure 1 there is shown a paper blank and the lines are indicated where the blank is to be out to form the handles and the improved supporting means therefor.
The blank is out along the lines 1, 2 and 3 to form a cut-out 4 for a handle 5. It is also out along the lines 6, 7 and 8 to form a cut-out 9 for the handle 10. These cut- outs 4 and 9 are integral extensions of a center strip 11, which center strip extends from one end of the blank 6 to the other. The blank is also cut along the line 12 to provide a lateral extension 13 which is formed integral with the upper end portion of the strip 11. The blank is likewise cut along the line 14 to provide an extension 15 which is integrally connected with the center strip 11. This cutting of the blank forms a handle 5 which has an upper arm 16 which is hingedly connected to the strip 11 along the line 17. The lower arm of the handle 5 which is indicated at 18 is hingedly connected along the line 19 with the strip 11. The upper arm 20 of the handle 10 is hingedly connected along the line 21 with the strip 11 and the lower arm 22 of the handle 10 is hingedly connected at 23 with the strip 11. The center strip 11, the cut- outs 4 and 9 and also the straps 13 and 15 are provided with an adhesive of any suitable type on one face thereof and these parts through the adhesive are connected to the outer face of the cup. It will be noted that the supporting means for the handles 5 and 10 may be placed close to the peripheral head 24 of the cup 25. The handles 5 and 10 may be folded to a position close to the wall of the cup as shown in Figure 2. In this position one cup with the handle attachment can be nested within another cup. These handles 5 and 10 may be swung outwardly to the position shown in Figure 3 and in this position, while the arms of the cup are spaced from each other where they are hingedly connected to the supporting means therefor, the outer portions of the handles will be brought together and the two handles will make a combined handle support for the cup. The cutouts as noted from a space between the upper and lower arms of the handles through which a finger or fingers may be inserted when grasping the handle.
It will be noted that the center strip to which the handles are hingedly connected extends above the upper hinge support for the handles and the laterally extending straps 13 and 15 make a very strong adhesive connection for the strip which supports the handles. When the strip is extended and provided with straps such as just described there is no chance of an adhesive breaking loose and the cup tilting so as to spill the contents of beverage contained in the cup.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the shaping of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
A handle attachment for preformed paper cups comprising a body blank having a center strip and a handle integrally and hingedly connected to each side of said strip, cut-outs forming finger holds for the handles, said cut-outs being integrally connected to said strip, said strip extending above the hinge connections of the handles, and laterally projecting straps formed integrally with said strip extension at each side thereof, said straps terminating in said handles when in nested position with the upper edges in alignment with the upper edge portion of the handles, said strip, cut-outs, and the straps being adhesively secured to the outer face of the cup, said handles being free to swing on said strip to a nestedposition adjacent the cup or to a substantially radial position relative to the cup for supporting the same.
