1 Claim.

My invention vrelates to depilatories, and more particularly to the type employing a substance into which the hair on the human body may be imbedded and removed with the substance.

All substances of this type used heretofore, whether applied to the skin directly or previously spread on some kind of fabric and then applied to the skin, had to be either heated before the application or dipped in la solvent before the application, or cooled during the application, thereby involving elaborate and complicated preparations and some of them undesirable manipulations during the process. All of them cause a considerable loss of time. The preparations requiring preheating can be easily over heated even -to the extent of bumingnthe skin, but at any rate, they lincrease the sensitivity of the skin and its susceptibility to irritation. The pepar-ation using solvents require still more time to permit the evaporationof the solvent, which in many cases have an unpleasant odor and in some instances present a fire hazard.

The present invention relates to a novel method of and means-for removing hair whereby these objectionable features are overcome.

The invention provides for a "ready-to-use depilatory pad comprising a fabric upon which is spread the depilatory substance covered with an easily removable protective sheet or folded so that the coated parts protect each other. The simple, quick and novel method of application consists in:

1. Removing the protective sheet or unfolding the pad,

2. Applying the exposed surface of the depilatory substance to the skin, and I 3. Immediately removing the fabric with the depilatory substance and the hair embedded therein. l

The depilatory is a substantially permanently sticky substance. This substance is spread on a fabric which is preferably impermeable to the substance, Uncoated portions on the pad may be provided to facilitate removal from the skin. By using a continuous free marginal area, parts of the pad may be severed from a larger section, and still provide uncoated portions. The primary objcct'of the removable protective sheet or the self-folded pad is to facilitate handling and packaging the pads.

Further objects are to provide a depilatory pad having the above characteristics, which will not increase the sensitivity of the skin, or its susceptibility to irritate, which will be permanently flexible, will effectively adhere to the hair upon contact therewith, which may be reused, which will not penetrate or otherwise affect the fabric' upon which it is mounted, and which will not harm the skin and will not have any unpleasant odor.

I accomplish these and other objects and obtain new results as will be apparent from the device described in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the attached claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of my depilatory pad.

Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the protective cover removed.

Fig. 3 illustrates the pad applied to the'arm.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, reference numeral Ill designates my depilatory pad comprising the flexible, prefer-ably rectangular in shape, base I I, the depilatory substance I2, and preferably a protective cover I'l.

The base II may be composed of any suitable flexible material such as thin white cloth, which may be rubberized, or otherwise made impermeable to the depilatory substance.

The depilatory substance comprises rosin and a rosin plasticising liquid which will produce a substantially permanent degree of stickiness to the substance sufiicient to remove hair imbedded therein from the skin when applied thereto.

Some of the rosin plasticising liquids that may be used are alcohols, such as octanol, acids, such as oleic, and esters such as glyceryl oleate, ethyl laurate, butyl myristate, diethyl or dibutyl phthalates, and the like, which are capable of plastcising the rosin to produce the desired degree of stickiness.

I have found that rosin in the proportions of 75 to 88%,'and the balance, the rosin plasticising liquids, produce the most desirable and effective depilatory substance. It may be desirable to combine two or more of the rosin plasticising liquids.

The protective covering is preferably a thin sheet of cellophane which I have found can be removed from the depilatory substance without tearing, although any protective sheet such as waxed paper, or an acetate may be used.

The depilatory substance I2 is preferably deposited on the base I I so as to leave an uncoated marginal area, asindicated by I3, I4, I5 and I6, respectively,

This permits longitudinal strips of the depilatory pad to be cut, containing portions of margins I3 and Ill available to facilitate removal.

Where shorter strips are desired, as for example for covering the upper lip, the pad may be cut transversely, containing portions of margins II and I6.

If large areas are desired to be cleared oi' superfluous hair, the entire pad may be used.

The pad may contain the depilatory substance on both sides thereof, and should preferably be covered with the protective sheet, when so made. If the depiiatory substance is used on only one side, it may be folded upon itself with the depilatory substance covered thereby.

In operation, the protective cover Il, when present, is removed and the exposed depilatory pad I0 isapplied with the depilatory substance in direct contact with the skin, as shown in Fig. 3. One of the marginal areas free of the substance, such as l5, is firmly grasped with the fingers and the entire pad removed in as short a period of time as is possible.

I have found that my depilatory pad will remove the hairs in contact with the depilatory substance by withdrawing them with their roots, retarding regrowth to a degree hitherto unobtainable. There is of course a momentary sting which is notI objectionable.

The protective cover I1 may be easily removed by lifting one of the free edges directly over the margins which are free from the depiiatory substance. The protective cover i1, before removal further facilitates cutting the pad into longitudinal or transverse strips with a scissors or knife.

I have thus described my invention, but I desire it understood that it is not conned to the particular forms shown and described, the same being merery illustrative, and that the invention may be carried qnt in other ways without departingfrom the spirit of my invention, and, therefore, I claim 'broadly the right to employ all equivalent instrumentalities coming within the scope of the appended claim, and by means of which objects of my invention are attained and new results accomplished, as it is obvious that the particular embodiments herein shown and described are only some of the many that may be employed to attain these objects and accomplish these results.

I claim:

A ready to use and instantly removable depilatory pad for application to the body comprising in combination a substantially impermeable base section and a coating permanently mounted thereon; said coating being made of plasticized rosin, of which an amount in the order of 75 to 88 is rosin and the balance is rosin plasticizer;

curing itself to the base section and to any hair with which it comes into contact, and of easily releasing itself from the skin when detached therefrom without injury thereto.
