DANIEL EDGAR, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,679, dated February 15, 1881.
Application filed December 20, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL EDGAR, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to that class of bedbottoms in which the ordinary hour-glass or Haring bed-sprin gs are permanently attached to the frame, the upper parts of said springs being connected by coiled springs; and my 1nvention consists in an improved system of connecting said springs, and also in supporting or bracing the outer springs in a bed-bottom by means of spiral springs secured to the bedbottom frame and to the bed-springs, as will hereinafter be fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a bed-bottom made according to my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of a section of my bed-bottom, showing a corner spring; and Fig. 3 is a diagram showing the upper connections of a complete bed-bottom.
The springsA are shown as formed with an elliptical base, a, and are secured upon the cross-bars B ofthe bed-bottom frame. rIhe upper coil of each of the springs A is connected to the adjacent springs by means of small spiral springs C D in the following manner: Each spring is connected to the springs immediately in front and rear and'on each side by the short spirals C, and every alternate spring in the transverse rows is, in addition to the connections above mentioned, connected, by the spirals D, with each spring diagonally oppositethat is, with the corner (No model.)
springs ofthe square of which said spring is the center. To support each outer spring, A, against inward strain, I brace it by a spiral, E,secured to the side ofthe bed-bottom frame and to one ofthe coils of the spring. The corner springs are provided with a bracingspring on each side.
By this construction I obtain a bed-bottom of great strength, elasticity, and durability, the advantages of which will readily present themselves to those familiar with the subject.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, substantially as herein set forth, ot' the bed-bottom frame, the springs A, and the horizontal connectin g-spirals C and D, each spring A being connected with the springs immediately in front and rear and on each side thereof by the short spirals C, and each alternate spring A being also connected by the spirals D with the springs diagonally opposite thereto, as shown and described.
2. The combination of the frame, the outer springs, A, and the bracing-springs E, wherebythe springs are elastically braced against inward strains, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the frame, the springs A, and the horizontal connecting-spiralsG and D, of the bracing or supporting spirals E, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my nameV this (ith day of December, A. D. ISSU.
DANIEL EDGAR.
