This invention relates to cartons in general and in particular to display cartons formed from single blanks wherein the merchandise is more attractivelydisplayed.

The principal object of this invention is the provision of a display carton or carton part which has an extending flange from at least one edge of the body of the carton part.

Specifically the object of this invention is the provision of a carton part or display base in which fiat supporting surface is .provided having an elevated top portion on which articles to be displayed are disposed or through which said ar-v from the bottom of the display bed.

Another important object of this invention-is to provide a display carton base or part such as set forth in the preceding objects and which is so constructed that it may be shipped from the manufacturer to the user in a knocked down or flattened condition requiring the user to merely raise the bed above the supporting base and fold extending sides to provide the walls between the display bed and supporting base thereby saving shipping costs from the manufacturer to the user, saving storage space for the user, and effecting other savings of a similar nature.

Still other objects are to provide an eflicient, durable and comparatively inexpensive device to accomplish the objects hereinbefore set forth.

Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modification may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invenion.

Fig. l is an extended plan view of the cardboard or thelike blank required to form a carton in accordance with the present invention.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 on Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 on Fig. 2.

Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view similar to Fig. 4 but illustrating a slight modification in the assembly of the parts and therefore a slight modification in the blank.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view similar to Figs. 4 and 5 but illustrating a slight further modification in the assembly of the parts and therefore the blank from which it is formed.

Fig-7 is a perspective view of one form of a carton display base made in accordance with this invention and may be formed from either of the three modifications of a blank shown in the application.

Fig. 8 is a perspectiveview of a carton in its manufactured condition or in its knocked down form as it comes from the manufacturer to the user ready to be set up as disclosed in Fig. '7.

Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a slight modification in the form of the blank.

Throughout the several views of the drawings the same or similar reference characters are employed to denote the same or similar parts.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the carton consists of a blank as shown in Fig. 1 which is delivered to the user in the form shown in Fig. 8, to be set up by said user as shown in Fig. '7 and with which an ordinary box lid, which is not novel in itself and'which does not form the subject matter of this application but is merely complementary to the invention to be hereinafter disclosed, may be used.

In order to clarify the subject of this application and to define the scope of the appended claims it is submitted that the top i0 may have openings II of any desired number, shape and 'in shipment or storage, and when made of transparent material is used during display, will be of a sufficient height above top Ill to clear the articles located therein.

Referring now to the utilitarian features of the blgnk it will be seen that the bottom is is .provi ed with extensions I along its sides and extensions l'l along its ends which have a scored demarcation line 12 dividing the extensions from the bottom I. 4 v

The end extensions H are further extended to the end flaps it forced inward to pass beneath the flaps 28. 'In so doing the tabs 2| lie horizonform end flaps I! which have ascored demarcation line 22 therein. Located medially of each score proper locking of the erected carton.

The side extensions are further extended to form side flaps 22 which have a scored demarcation line 22 therein. Reference to Fig. l

will clearly show that the inner side flap 22 also forms a side flap for the top I and has a complementary side flap 22 at the outside edge of the top ID. The side flaps 22 of the top in only are terminally provided with tabs 2:.

The score 24 located across the ends of the top l0 provide a demarcation for the tabs 22 and the end extensions 25 of the top Ill.

The end extensions 26 are further extended to form end flaps 25 which have a scored demarcation line 21 therein. Located medially of each score :21 is a U shaped slot providing a tab 28. It follows that two or more tabs 28 may be located on the score lines 21, depending on the size of the carton. The only requisite being that the tabs on the top portion mesh with thetabs on the bottom portion.

Still referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the extensions it and

29 and 32 on the bottom It have an adhesive substance applied to their upper surfaces as shown in the extended plan view. Also the upper surface of the outer side flap 22 of the top and the under or reverse surface of the outer side flap 22 of the bottom are similarly treated with an adhesive substance.

The foregoing is believed to fully describe-the component parts of the inVention which is formed in the following manner through the gluing and Dressing machine.

The surfaces i6 and 29 are contacted after an adhesive is applied and pressed so that they adhere together thus bringing the top ll across the bottom II. The

12 and 20 are then contacted and pressed so that they adhere toaether and finally the adhesive surfaces ofthe flaps 22 are contacted and pressed so that they adhere together. In this manner the carton may tally "and are caused to project into the slots formed by tab '22 thereby locking the ends of the carton against upward and downward movement. The arrangement described is best seen by referring to Figs. 3 and '7.

A slightly modified construction in the blank is shown in Fig. 9, in that-a flap 21 is provided as extending from the panel 22 at one side of the blank. The flap 2i is provided with an adhesive and bent over the adjacent portion22 so that an extra thickness of the cardboard blarilris provided'to even the'tension on the gluing machine when pressure is applied; all other features of the invention together with the forming of the carton are unaffected by the addition of flap 2|.

Still another modification is shown in Fig. 5 wherein the top It is not provided with a side extension 22 on its outer side; the iinal glue lap is caused through the medium of the flap N which lspressed to the underside of the top It having a suitable adhesive therebetween.

.Another modification of the final glue lap is shown in Fig. 6 wherein the extensions on the outer side of the bottom H are all removed and the addition of an extra flap 32 provided adjacent the outer side extension 22 of the top ID. The flap 22 is provided with an adhesive and pressed to the bottom I4.

In the original disclosure and the modifications shown it should be vclearly understood that it is the disposition of the final glue flap rather than any basic change in the blank as a whole which forms the subject matter of the individual modiiicatlons. While we have described our invention strictly in accordance with the embodiments shown, it is to be understood that we may make changes such as to suit the process of manufacture without departing from the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
