29 and of larger diameter 'than the 'cylinder whereby the edge ofthe wheel 33 extendsthrough afslot 34 inthe 'covermemb'e'r 3. The slot`34and the exposed portion of the wheel are located at the back and right side of the register in convenient position for the operator to actuate same by drawing the palm of his hand over the roller 33.
The cylinder 29 is preferably provided with pins 35 projecting from the surface of said cylinder. The pins are preferably arranged in spaced relation corresponding to the distance between transverse lines of severance defining the sections of the manifold, and adapted to engage apertures 36 of the manifold to feed said manifold through the register.
The preferred form of manifold is arranged yin .V
a packet, as shown in Fig. 4, and consists of a plurality of individual forms 31 preferably separated by lines of perforations 38 which are arranged to form the fold line 39 by which the man.
ifold is formed in the shape of the packet.. With this arrangement, the apertures 36 occur onthe fold line and line'of perforations. n fhere'isfthus, no apertture in the writing spaceof 'theindiv'idual form. It willnalso be notedthat the entire area of each manifold section is available vfor receiving impressionss.- Inl-order for'thepins 35 `to en# gage the apertures 36 vinl the' manifold to" p'roperly feed same through the register'fthecylinder 29 preferably has a circumference that isl twice the length o f the manifold. .'I'that way the pins 35 are diametrically spaced-insuch a manner that one-half of a revolution of the cylinder 29 moves the manifold a sufficient distance Ato expose the next` form and align it virrthe writing space as later descrbed.- y i. f y
The surfaces 23 and 28 off the member IB- and rib 25 respectively guide the manifold into engagement with the' cylinder 29 andthe rpins engage in the apertures 35. In order to a'ss'urefclose engagement between the manifold and the cylinder 29, spaced guide members 4l)l and 4| are arranged in the base and. cover members respectively in alignment with' the respective pins 35. Theguides 4 0 Vand 4i are provided .with grooves 42 and 43 of suitable size to provide clearance for the pins 35, -yet permit the ribs 44 lforming the sidesv of the groove to vclosely engage the cylinder 29 to hold the manifold 31 in closeengagementtherewith.` 'Il'he guides 4I terminate .slightly forwardly of a vertical line projected through the" centerv of the cylinder 29 where la slot'45 .is .provided in the cover .to .permit passage of the manifold. to the upper surface of said. cover. The upper surface I3 of the cover .is recessed,` as at48, whereby the forms of the manifoldflie below the surface 41 of the cover. The rear edge of the recessed portion of the cover istaperedV downwardly, as at 48, and provided with notches .in alignment withthe pins 35 of the cylinder 29 to aid ,instripping the forms of the .manifold from the feeding device.
The recessed portion of the cover is provided with shoulders 50 spacedabove the surface 46 a distance slightly greater than the thickness of the manifold sheet and below the surface 41 suf# ciently to. receive a panel I 'adapted .to cover the-slot 45 and align with the surface 41 to pre-A sent a smooth surfaceat the top of theregister. The.panel5| is preferably `of .U shape, whereby the legs 52 and 53.are of substantially the same length as the'forms of the manifold and the extremeities of the legs are provided with trunnions 54 adaptedtoseat in apertures 55 in the cover to hingedly. mount the panel 5l thereon, said legs 52 and 53 being connected at the outer extremities thereof by a rod 56 to formA an enclosed opening of substantially the same size as the forms of the manifold, whereby the panel 5l, when in lowered position on the cover 3, provides a space permitting writing over the entire surface of the individual form. When said form is advanced to align a new form in the opening, the perforated lines 38 are arranged slightly forward of the rod 56 whereby the written form may be lifted and drawn against the rod 56 to facilitate tearing of the form from the manifold. Spaced slightly forwardly of the rod 55 is a slot 51 in the cover 3 to permit insertion of the carbon copies of the written form into a storage chamber 58 in the interior of the register, the
chamber 58 being separated from the remainder `of the register by means of ribs 59 and 90on the base and cover members respectively.
linl order to facilitate raising of the panel 5l, the leg 5 3 is provided with a lateral projection 5l and the cover is provided with a recess A62 whereby the projection 6I may be grasped by the fingers to lift the rear. end of same andv hinge the panel upwardly on the'ftrunnions 54;to permit access to the slot 45 and facilitate feeding of a new manifold'through-the register.
.If desired, pins l63 may be placed on the upper edge of the walll adapted to engage in recesses in the .edge 9 of .the wall l I vto help hold the forward endvof therespective portions of the register housing in alignment, the wallB being providedwith a recessed portion 6.4 to facilitate graspingof the wall l2 to raisethe cover from the base member 2.
vIn orderto avoid theexcessive. useof carbon and/or the expensive operation,k of folding acarbon sheet in the manifold,y I prefer to provide a separate carbon for thel registen, said :carbon preferably being :formed in a roll 65 mounted on brackets 156. Y The carbon is of a suitable Width to conform to the length of the individual formsvof the manifoldsaid carbon beingifed through a slotl. in. the recess portion, 4 r6 of the C03/,T6113 and extended .transversely between the manifold forms. A register for sectional manifold strips including a housing having upper and lower sections, means connecting the sections for hinging the upper housing ysection on the lower housing section, said upper section of the housing having panel portions spaced apart to provide a passageway therebetween for movement of a sectional manifold strip, said upper panel portionhaving awindow opening extending `transversely of the passageway with opposite transverse'edges spaced apart to correspond with upper and lower edges of a section of said manifold stripand the lower housing for storing the sectional manifold strip,
a feed rollerl extending transversely at the hingedv connection of the housing sections and intermee diate the storage means and said passageway,
