C. Application August 20, 1952, Serial No. 305,318 Claims. (Cl. 282-16) This invention relates toa tamper-proof pocket autographic register.
A general object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a tamper-proof autographic register which is locked against access to the original or a carbon of the sales slip, and embodying other novel features hereinafter set forth.
An additional object is to provide a tamper-proof register so constructed that it is impossible to obtain a duplicate or carbon copy without locking the original ticket in the machine.
A further object is to provide a tamper-proof register that may be locked by a lead seal. The seal may be pressed into place with pliers having removable letters for identification purposes.
Other objects will be found throughout the specification.

The present register is constructed for pocket use and has special structural features of design that prevents access to the interior of the register, or feeding of a carbon with its paper from the machine without also feeding the original ticket to an interior sealed receptacle. The register is of special size and shape, so as to adapt it to be readily inserted into and removed from the pocket of a workman, such as a dispenser of ice, a waiter on a dining car of a train,
etc. On the writing of an order on the table as hereinafter explained, the handwheel is operated to cause the original web to be wound on the record roller within the locked receptacle and to feed one or more carbon sheets through a slot in the casing, after which feeding operation, the carbon paper may be torn from the pack along a weakened line and handed to the customer.
In the drawings, A indicates the tamper-proof register as a whole. The register is of a small size as compared with autographic registers of the table type, and is comparatively flat and occupies a small space so that it may be readily inserted in and withdrawn from the pocket of the user. The register is provided with a substantially flat top 1 having a hinged end 2 by which it is hinged to the end of the casing 4.
As will be noted by reference to Figures 1 and 2, the top 1 and easing 4 are provided with slanting sides 5 and 6 respectively in order to facilitate insertion into and removal from the pocket of the user.
At the opposite end of the casing from the hinge 2 is the fastening means 7. This consists of a pair of extensions having eyes for insertion of a wire forming part of the latter being partly a lead seal 7a. The purpose of this seal is to prevent ice access to the record sheet or roll by the workman, conductor or other individual who is operating the tamperproof register until the end of the work period, whereupon the employer or other person having supervisory authority may break the seal and inspect the record sheet or roll.
The paper pack may be of the usual zig-zag formation as indicated at 8 in Figure 3. The paper is fed upwardly over the end 9 of the table 10. The end 9 comprises a sleeve as shown in Figures 3 and 5 which is pivotally mounted on the shaft 11, which latter has bearings 12 in opposite sides of the casing. The table is provided with vertical side walls 13 and 14, the former having an aperture 15 and the latter having a slot 16.
The carbon paper is indicated at 17 and this carbon paper is of such size that it substantially covers the table 10, that is at least between the vertical side walls 13 and 14.
The carbon paper is provided with a loop 18 through which is threaded the holder 19 whose opposite ends are provided with tongues 20 which are secured in the vertical side walls 13 and 14 in aperture 15 and slot 16. When it is desired to remove the carbon paper, one tongue 20 is slid backwardly in the slot 16 and the other tongue 20 (not shown) is moved out of the aperture 15. This operation takes place preferably when there are no record sheets on the table. It will be appreciated that in order to remove the pack, or insert a new pack in place of a pack which has been used, it is necessary to break the seal 7a and to lift the top 1 about its pivot 3, whereupon the table it may be moved about its pivot 11, whereby access may be had to the space in which the paper pack is housed. It will further be understood that the pack of interleaved paper is provided with the usual weakened portions at their ends 21, whereby tearing from the pack is facilitated.
The table top is provided with a downwardly extending skirt 22 supported on the upper surface of the casing bottom and having open- ended slots 23 and 24 for the reception of the pin wheels 25 and 26 respectively, which wheels are provided with studs 27 for engagement with the apertures 58 of the paper. The carbon paper 17 would, of course, be located between a pair of webs 29 as shown in Figure 3, and be narrower than the web.
The top is provided with a trough 39 having slots 31 and 32 for the reception of the pin wheels 25 and 26 and their studs 27. These members are mounted on the roller 28 which latter is mounted on the shaft 33. The ends of the shaft are housed in the sub-frame 34 which latter is removable from the casing. The roller 28 is splined to the shaft (not shown) and also splined to the shaft is a combined thumb wheel and drive gear 35. The combined thumb wheel and gear 35 drives the pinion 36 mounted on a shaft 37 whose opposite end is provided with a pulley 38. This pulley drives the spiral spring belt 39 which is trained over the pulley 40 splined to the record-receiving shaft 41 having a slot 42 for the reception of paper. The original record sheet passes over the roller 28 under guide 43 and is wound around the shaft 41.
It will be understood that the top 1 is provided with the usual opening 44 for exposing the paper sheets as they lie on the table 10 in order that said sheets may be written upon.
Referring again to Figures 1 and 3, the trough 30 has portions 6 and 45 which extend below the level of the trough so that when the top is in the position shown in Figures 1 to 4, these depressed portions 64- and 45 frictionally press the plies of paper against the surfaces of the wheels 25 and 26, which latter are preferably integral with roller 28.
The trough is provided with an enlarged portion 46 in which is located a third slot 47 for the reception of the combined thumb and drive gear 35. This wheel is used in driving the shaft 33, the gears 35 and 36, and the shafts 37 and 41 by means of the mechanism above described. -When the combined thumb and drive gear 35 is rotated, a length of paper substantially that of the length of the opening 44, is moved across the table. Interleaved paper of this same length will then be moved so that one of the sheets will be wound upon the shaft 41 and the other will protrude outwardly of the casing through the slot 49. By reference to Figure 4, it will be noted that the shaft 33 is permitted to make only one complete rotation. The periphery of the roller 2% is of such size that it will feed a length of paper across the table equivalent to that located between the folds 21 as seen in Figure 3. The roller 28 is provided with a stop 50. There is a curved spring member 51 which is fastened by rivets 52 to the bottom of the casing. The curved side of this spring member 51 is engaged by the cam-shaped end 52' of the press button 53 which latter extends through an aperture in the casing as seen in Figures 1, 2, and 4.
Assuming a sale has been made for a commodity such as a quantity of ice, the name, address, amount, and
other data are then written on the exposed sheet shown in Figure 1. The press button 53 is then pushed to the right as shown in Figure 4 to cause the spring 51 to bccome disengaged from the stop 52. Then the knurled thumb wheel 48 is rotated to cause the paper to be fed, the roller 28 will then make a complete revolution. It will be understood that the pressed button 53 is released as soon as the wheel 43 is operated. Upon the complete rotation of the roller 23, a new paper surface will be exposed in the opening 44, the carbon copy will be projected through the slot 49 and the record copy will be at least partially wound on the shaft 41. The operator then grasps the end of the carbon sheet which is protruding through the slot 49 and tears the same on the weakened portion at the end 21, which end is adjacent to the upper periphery of the roller 28 at this time. At this time also the spring member 51 has engaged the stop 50 to prevent further rotation of the shaft. This operation may be repeated upon the completion of each sale.
With the pivoted top closed and sealed by the sealing means 7, access to the record copy is prevented until the seal is broken which is usually at the end of a days run when the register is opened by an inspector who breaks the seal.
It is impossible without breaking the seal to insert anything, such as a piece of paper, under the record sheet as it lies on the table or during the feeling of the paper.
The lead seal is pressed into scaling engagement with the wires, preferably with pliers (not shown) that have removable letters whereby to impress a designating letter I- or symbol on the lead seal.
The casing and some of the parts may be made ofplastic material, although all parts could be made of metal. Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of this invention, and some of the improvements described above may be used without using others of them. I desire to be limited, therefore, only to the extent set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding J said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table extending over said roller and having a downwardly extending skirt, said means supporting said table comprising a hinge at one end thereof for connecting the table to said casing, said skirt being located at the opposite end and being adapted to engage the bottom of the casing.

A tamper-proof autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and handoperated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having vertical side walls for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, said table extending over said roller and having a downwardly extending skirt, said means supporting said table comprising a hinge at one end thereof for connecting the table to said casing, said skirt being located at the opposite end and being adapted to engage the bottom of the casing.

A tamper-proof. pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, said carbon attaching means including an aperture and a slot located adjacent the side edges of said table and a carbon holder having ends adapted to engage said aperture and slot, said table extending over said roller and having a downwardly extending skirt, said means supporting said table comprising a hinge at one end thereof for connecting the table to said casing, said skirt being located at the opposite end and being adapted to engage the bottom of the casing.

A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an' opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, and means for preventing a greater rotation of said roller than is necessary to allow a new record sheet to be positioned on said table, said casing having a bottom extending substantially parallel with said top, a slot extending across said bottom said slot being of a width of at least that of the width of one of said sheets of paper, whereby a carbon copy sheet may be fed through said slot in the bottom of said casing while the original is retained on said record carrying shaft, and an unobstructed passageway from said roller to said slot whereby said carbon copy sheet may be fed in a direct line from said roller through said slot.

A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening. compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for re movably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, said top having a trough extending at least partially across the same, said trough forming an inwardly depressed portion in said top, a plurality of slots in said trough, said roller having feed pins thereon adapted to extend through said slots.

A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, said trough forming an inwardly depressed portion in said top, said top having a trough, slots in said trough, a feed roller having raised cylindrical portions provided with paperfeeding pins extending through said slots, and said trough having the pressed portions adapted to force plies of paper against the raised cylindrical portions of said roller.

A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, a trough in said top, said trough forming an inwardly depressed portion in said top, said trough having a slot, a hand wheel extending partially through said slot, said wheel being mounted on said roller.
8 A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, a trough in said top, said trough having a slot, a hand Wheel extending partially through said slot, said wheel being mounted on said roller, and a plurality of additional slots, said roller having raised cylindrical portions provided with feed pins which extend through said slots, pivot means for pivoting said top to said casing, said table having pivot means for pivoting one end of said table to said casing and a downwardly extending skirt for supporting the other end of said table on the bottom of said casing, said two pivot means being located adjacent to each other at one of the casing ends, and exit slot means for the carbon copy of one of said interleaved sheets in the bottom of the casing.

A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, said register having inclined sides and ends, one of said ends being of less width than the other end for ready insertion and removal from the pocket of the user, pivot means for pivoting said top to said casing, said table having pivot means for pivoting one end of said table to said casing and a downwardly extending skirt for supporting the other end of said table on the bottom of said casing, said two pivot means being located adjacent to each other at one of the casing ends, and exit slot means for the carbon copy of one of said interleaved sheets in the bottom of the casing.

A tamper-proof pocket autographic register comprising a casing, a table in said casing, means supporting said table in said casing, a top, means for sealably mounting said top on said casing, said top having an opening, compartment means for mounting a plurality of interleaved sheets of paper in said casing, means for feeding said paper across said table, and a record carrying shaft in said casing, a said paper feeding means comprising roller mounted adjacent to one end of said table in said casing and hand-operated means for rotating said roller and said record shaft, said table having means for removably attaching a carbon sheet to said table, said register having inclined sides and ends, one of said ends being of less Width than the other end for ready insertion and removal from the pocket of the user, said casing providing a smooth exterior surface from the smaller end thereof to at least the central portion thereof, pivot means for pivoting said top to said casing, said table having pivot means for pivoting one end of said table to said casing and a downwardly extending skirt for supporting the other end of said table on the bottom of said casing, said two pivot means being located adjacent to each other at one of the casing ends, and exit slot means for the carbon copy of one of said interleaved sheets in the bottom of the casing.
