Application June 13, 1944, Serial No. 540,009
3 Claim.
This invention appertains to a general purpose implement for external use in grooming, care and treatment, of the person, both for beautifying and medication purposes.
One of the several objects of the invention is to provide an implement of this character which, although primarily designed for use as an applicator of rouge to the lips, is, by an interchange of materials and parts, adapted for other purposes, for instance, a an applicator of various cosmetic and medical preparations, for beautifying, cleansing and treatment of the skin, and as an instrument for manicuring the finger and toe nails.
Another object of the invention has to do with the provision of a device of the kind mentioned, which is of an attractively streamlined design,
comparable to high grade modernistic toilet accessories forhome, professional and travel use, and embodies refinements in construction and arrangement allowing for ease in effecting interchange of materials and parts and in manipulation during use.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides in the certain new and useful combination, construction, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the implementapplicator, in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a view similar to that of Figure l, but partly in section, and showing the telescopically interconnected casing parts separated to permit of the alternate use of the interchangeable applicator elements, materials and implement tips;
Figure 3 is another similar view, but of the removable casing part only, showing the rouge or salve and its spreader replaced at the insertable end of the casing part by a liquid container and applicator;
Figure 4 is a longitudinalsection through the implement-applicator assembly;
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, taken through the line 5-5 on Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a view similar to that of Figure 5, but taken through the line 8-6 on Figure 4;
Figure 7 is an enlarged, fragmentary, longitudinal, sectional view, taken through the line 1-7 of Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary, longitudinal, sectional view, of the insertable end of the removable casing part, taken at right angles to its position as in Figure 2;
Figure 9 is a side view 01' a manicuring tool attachment that is interchangeable with certain of the applicator types of detachable tips;
Figure 10 is a side view of a different form of the manicuring tool attachment; and
Figure 11 is an enlarged side view of a form of detachable applicator tip.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, the embodiment of the invention, as it is exemplified therein, is comprised in an elongated cylindrical casing formed to provide longitudinally separable parts or sections 20 and 22, the part or section 22 having a slightly reduced inner end portion 22', adapted for snug telescopic engagement with the complemental end of the part or section 20. Both casing parts or sections 20, 22, each have their outer ends made substantially frusto-conical and centrally apertured to seat a ferrule 24, which is preferably' screw threaded in place and .has its bore opening into the interior of its respective casing part or section.
Slidably mounted within the bore of each ferrule 24, is a tip holder 28, that is preferably in the form of a solid cylindrical body, having a length substantially equal to that of the ferrule bore and a tip attaching socket 28 centered in each of its ends. Centered between the ends of each ferrule 24, and extending diametrically through the same, is a shaft 30, which has one end provided with a circular-enlargement 32, seated within a recess formed about the shaft opening, and its other end journaled in the outer end of an arm 34, extending inwardly of the casing part or section. The inner end of the arm 34 is rigidly connected to the inner end of an actuator arm 36, which extends at right angles to the arm 36 and. outwardly of a slot 60 formed in the casing wall, a finger piece or button 38 being provided on the outer end of the actuator arm 36 to facilitate its manipulation, as required. The slot 40 is disposed longitudinally of the casing part or section, with its outer end terminating in the plane of the inner end of the ferrule 24 and its inner end at a point to limit the inward movement of the arms 34, 36, when the tip holder 28 is withdrawn into the ferrule bore to substantially its full length. The slots are preferably located in opposite sides of the casing parts or sections 20, 22, so that the finger pieces or buttons It are positioned one hundred eighty degrees apart, substantially as shown.
The tip holders 2B, of both the casing parts or sections 20, 22, are each provided with interchangeable tips at their opposite ends, the tips 42, of the tip holder mounted in the casing part or section 20, constituting applicators for certain cosmetic and/or medicinal preparations, one differing from the other, while the tips 44, of the tip holder mounted in the outer end of the easing part or section 22, constituting finishing instrumentalities and also differing one from the other. Each of the several tips 42, 44, is made up of a working element, of suitable material and shape, that is mounted on a backing disc or plate 46, which, in turn, is mounted on a pin or stud 48, having one of its ends engaged, preferably by screw thread, in a socket 28. Each of these tips 42, 44, is preferably of a tapered form corresponding to the taper of the conical ends of the casing parts or sections 20, 22.
In thus mounting the tips 42, 44, they are subject to alternate use by a manipulation of the finger pieces Or buttons 38 outwardly along the slots 40, to project the arms 34, together with the tip holders 26, outwardly of the ferrules 24, so that the tip holders may be swung end over end about the shafts 30 to reverse the tips, as required. Upon reversal, the tip holders 25 are returned to normal positions within the ferrules 24, by inward movements of the finger pieces or buttons 38, along the slots 40.
The' casing parts or sections 20, 22, are interconnected by means of a substantially rigid bar or strip 50, one end of which carries a pin 52, that is movable along a slotway 56, formed longitudinally of the cylindrical portion only of the casing part or section 20, th inner end of the pin 52 having an arcuate spring 54 secured thereto and spanning the slotway in a manner to prevent disengagement of the pin therefrom. The slotway 56 is formed in the bottom of a shallow channel or groove 58 and terminates short of its opposite ends, the inner end of the channel or groove opening through the like end of the casing part or section 20, in aligned relation with a complemental part 58, formed in the larger cylindrical part of the casing part or section 22. The opposite end of the bar or strip 50 also carries a pin 60, which projects inwardly of an aperture formed in the bottom of the channel or groove part 58, in the casing part or section 22, and is likewise provided with an arcuate spring 62, on its inner end, which spans the aperture to secure the pin in place. Thus, when the easing parts or sections 20, 22, are aligned and brought into telescopic assembly, the bar or strip 50 is snapped into seated engagement with the channel or groove 58, 58, in a manner that its exposed face lies flush with the surrounding surfaces of the casing parts or sections.
The reduced portion 22', of the casing part or section 22, is provided to house a cosmetic or medicinal material, or a container thereof, which is to be projected outwardly of the inner open end of the reduced portion for use, by means of a follower 64, that is in the form of a disc, having an actuator button 68 mounted on its edge and projecting outwardly through a slotway 56, ex
tending longitudinally of the reduced portion. The actuator button 68 is preferably provided with a flange in at its inner end to span the slotway 66 and give it stability in its sliding movements, while the edge of the follower disc 64 is recessed to receive a housing 14 for a coiled spring 12, which tensions the actuator button 68 outwardly of the slotway 66 and holds the flange 10 in frictional contact with the opposed wall, at opposite sides of the slotway 66, so that the follower disc 64 is sustained thereby in any set position. By this arrangement, and the rounding off of the outer end of the actuator button 68, the latter will be depressed in a manner to not interfere with the insertion of the reduced portion 22, of the casing part or section 22, inwardly of the open end of the casing part or section 20. With the follower disc thus installed, a cosmetic or medicinal material or substance A, such as a stick of lip rouge, camphor ice, or the like, is inserted in the open end of the reduced casing portion 22 and seated upon the follower disc 64, so that it will be projected from the opening for use as required, by movements imparted to the latter from the actuator button 68. The follower 64 is provided with a suitable means, such as one or mor pointed studs or prongs 64', to retain the substance A in place thereon, so that it will conform to the raising and lowering movements of the follower during its useful 1 fe.
In use, the casing part or section 22 is withdrawn from the casing part or section 20, when.
the end of the bar or strip 50, connecting the latter through the pin connection 52, will slide along the slotway 56 to permit of a complete separation of the casing parts or sections, while maintaining them in interconnected relation. By now manipulating the casing part or sections 22 relatively to the casing part or section 20, which is made permissible by the pivoting action of the opposite ends of the bar or strip 50 on the pins 52, 60, and after the material 'or substance A has' been projected from the open end of the reduced casing portion 22', by a manipulation of the actuator button 68, th material or substance is to be applied to an applicator 42, with a wiping action thereon. Following this, the casing part or section 22 is replaced in assembly with the casing part or section 20, thus forming a hand grip for manipulating the applicator tip to apply the material or substance A to the lips or other skin surface .to be coated or treated. Having thus applied the material or substance, th casing assembly is reversed, end for end, and a finishing tip 44 is now manipulated to effect a uniform distribution of the material or substance, or to remove any surplus that may be present. If the substance A is to be applied direct from the lips of th cap or hood 16, the outer tapered end of the casing section 22 can be seated in the open end of the casing section 20, so that the joined casing sections constitute a hand grip to facilitate the operation.
The several applicator and finishing tips 42, 44, may vary in both design and composition, although the applicator tips 42 are preferably made of sponge rubber, having very fine pores, while the finishing tips 44 are preferably of brush form, with bristles of varying degrees of fineness. In the brush form of finishing tip, as shown in Figure 11, a cup or ferrule 46 is employed to receive the butts of the bristles 44 and this has a threaded stud 48 for engagement with a socket 28 in a tip holder 26. In order to effectively apply the material or substance A to an applicator tip 42, and to maintain a tapered shape to the end of the cosmetic or medicinal stick projected from the open end of the reduced casing portion parallel spreader lips 80, projecting outwardly from the center of the cap or hood, substantially as is shown in Figure -8; the lips preferably bein rounded off, after the manner as shown in Figure 2. Thus, the substance will be deposited upon an applicator tip 42 in a flat ribbon-like or film form, when it is extruded outwardly through the slit 18 and from between the lips 80. To retain the cap or hood 16 in place, it preferably has its attaching end formed to provide a bead 82 for engagement with an annular groove 84, formed in the reduced casing portion 22, immediately adjacent its open end. The substance A may be applied directly to the surface to be treated from the spreader lips of the cap or hood 16, in lieu of being transferred therefrom to an applicator tip 42. Also, due to the form of the cap or hood 16, it is adapted to be employed as an applicator for substances in stick form by being engaged over the open ends of the containers in which such substances are now being sold.
As shown in Figure 3, the cosmetic or medicinal stick A, may be replaced within the reduced casing portion 22', by a container or bottle 86, having a brush or swab form of applicator 88 secured on its discharge neck. The container or bottle may be filled with a finger nail lacquer, or it can be provided with a liquid content, medicinal or non-medicinal. Also, and as shown in Figures 9 and 10, the applicator and finishing tips 42, 44, may be replaced on the tip holders 26, by a form of manicuring tool 90, which has a screw threaded attaching stud 82 for engagement with a socket 28.
Having thus fully described my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in design and minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or its scope as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, an elongated hollow casing having an open end, a member slidably mounted in said opening, applicator tips mounted on the inner and outer ends of said member, an actuator mounted for sliding movement on and relatively to said casing for moving said member outwardly and inwardly of said opening, and means for pivoting said member to said actuator, said member being reversible on said pivot means for the alternate use of said applicator tips when the member is disposed outwardly of said opening.
2. The device as in claim 1, with the said casing made cylindrical in form and having its open end tapered, each of said applicator tips being similarly tapered so as to conform to the taper of the casing end, when the member is positioned inwardly of the opening.
3. In a device of the class described, an elongated hollow casing, said casing being made cylindrical in form and in separable sections, one of said sections having its inner end reduced in diameter sufi ciently for its telescopic engagement with the inner end of the other section. means slidably and pivotally interconnecting said sections to allow for their separation and for angular movements of one section in relation to the other, the outer end of said one section being tapered and open, a member slidably mounted in said open end, applicator tips mounted in the inner and outer ends of said member, means for moving said member outwardly and inwardly of said open end, pivot means connecting said member to said moving means, and an actuator element for said member moving means slidable in a slot opening through the wall of the casing section, said member being reversible on said pivot means for the alternate use of said applicator tips, when the member is disposed outwardly of said opening.
