PICTURE-FRAME EASEL AND BACK-REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 236,953, dated January 25, 1881.

support from warping or beingsoiled or destroyed, the said back being sustained in an inclined position by a back-support or brace attached to the-same by a new method; second, to combine with such back easel-like standa'rds, which'shall give an artistic and pleasing effect and, third, to provide improved facilities for putting the picture in place in the frame or removing it therefrom.

Referring to the drawings, the letter a represents a frame having a sheet-metal back, c, permanently attached, to the easel b b, said frame being formed by turning up the edges of the back c into proper shape, so as to contain the picture d and glass front e, as shown in Fig. 3.

The base a may be integral with the back o or with the frame', but, as a matter of cheapness and convenience inmannfacture, I prefer to make it from a separate piece that may be properly attached to the back c.

Heretofore the bracef has been attached by means of soldering or riveting. To avoid the objections incident to such manner of attachment, I form u-pon the back c the return-liange c', and upon the brace the iiange f. This flange f is then hooked into the iian ge on the backc, and while in this position the two anges are firmly closed together, resulting in a secure, durable, and cheap fastening. The back c, on which the return-.nan ge c is formed, may be ot' any suitable dimensions, being eX- tended at will by the addition ofthe easel-like standards, as shown.

In Fig. 5 a simple form of my invention is shown as adapted to the support of pictures without the addition of the frame for glass or the easel-like standards, in which case an additional advantage of the return-ange c is shown-viz., that it renders the back c more rigid.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination ot' the picture-back c, having the return-iiange c', with the brace f, having the tlange f' hooked into and firmly closed down upon the iiange ot' the back, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of the easel b, having the back c, with a return-flange c', the back being permanently attached to the easel, and having a brace, f, with the iiange f hooked into and firmly closed down upon the iiange of the back, substantially as shown and described.
