W. S. MOLEWBE.
CLOCK.
No. 272,737. Patented Feb.20, 1883.
N. PETERS, Pncwuma mhen \Jashinglnn. D C,
YVILLIAM S. MOLEIVEE, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JACOB J. NICHOLS,
OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
CLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,737, dated February 20, 1883.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. MoLnwEE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvement is to produce an inexpensive clock of a novel and beautiful appearance, and I also desire to remove, as far as possible, the ordinary appearance of a clock.
To this end my improvement consists in the combination of a frame, a panel of glass or analogous material, bearing the delineation of a clock-dial, loosely inserted within said frame at the back, a plate secured to said frame behind the panel, clock-work attached to the back of said plate, whereby said plateis made to serve as a means of securing the panel in place and as .a support for the clock-work, and a hinged leg or prop attached to the back of said frame and adapted to support the frame in an inclined position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a clock embody ing my improve ment, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a frame, which may be made of metal or other suitable materialfor instance, of ornamental brass-and is provided with feet a. A
B designates a panel inserted in a rabbetin the back of the frame, and fastened there by a metal plate, O, extending over it and secured at the edges to the back of the frame by small screws 1). The panel B bears a delineation of a clock-dial and. the hands of a clock; but it is so decorated with representations of gailycolored flowers, or with other bright and attractive designs, as to materially detract from the prominence which thedial and hands would otherwise have. I intend generally to made this panel ot'opal glass; but other materials may be employed.
1.) designates a case containing the clockworks. It is supported in rear of the panel B by being attached to the metal plate O. Hence it is supported from the frame A.
E designates a leg or prop, which may be made of metal, and which, as here shown, is coni'iected to the upper part of the frame A by a hinge. It extends down behind the clockworks, and may be adjusted so as to support the frame at different angles suitable to the height of the article on which the clock may be arranged.
It will be seen that by my invention I produce a cheap clock of very handsome appearance, and which possesses more the appearance of an article of mere ornament than that of an ordinary clock.
\Nhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The combination ofthe frame A, the panel B, of glass or analogous material, bearing the delineation of a clock-dial and loosely inserted Wll hin said frame at the back, the plate O, secured to said frame behind the panel, the clockwork I), attached to the back of said plate, whereby said plate is made to serve as a means of securing the panel in the frame and as a support for theclock-work, and the hinged leg or prop E, attached to the back of said frame, substantially as specified.
\V. S. MOLEAVEE.
\Yitnesses I). B. HARRISON, 'I. M. (Jozznns.
