1' Claim.
I This invention relates to improvements in pockets.
Broadly, it is an object of my invention to create a frame patch with an inserted flapk which gives the appearance of a frame patch pocket.
More particularly, it is an object of `my invention to provide a pocket for garments which has the appearance of an applied patch pocket. However, the outer material is not cut except for the horizontal slit for entrance of the hand.
Heretofore, patch pockets have been m'ade by cutting a patch of the same material as the outside of the garment and stitching thesame to the outside of the garment, thus creating a patch pocket which is well known in the industry. Various governmental regulations havenow been passed eliminating the patch pocket in order to save the valuable outer material from which garments are usually constructed.
It is, therefore, an object of my invention to provide a pocket which gives the appearance of the well known patch pocket, but the only cutting is a horizontal slit across the upper portion of the pocket.
A further object of my invention, is to provide a simplified method of construction ofa frame patch with an inserted flap which gives the appearance of a patch pocket. y
Another object of my invention, is to provide for a pocket in `a garment whereby inexpensive materials may be used for the backing material of the packet, thus saving the valuable outside material.
In order to afford a full understanding of the purpose underlying my invention, and without intending thereby to limit the invention to the particular details disclosed, reference will be made to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a practical embodying of the invention. In the drawing;
Fig. 1 is a plan view of one form of my frame patch with an inserted flap embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of my frame patch pocket showing the flap in raised position,
Fig. 3 is a back View of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken through' line lI-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, numeral I indicates the outer material of the garment upon which a frame patch I I is created; the frame consisting of a raised portion I2' -circumscribing the pocket. At the upper portion of the pocket there is a flap I3 which may be raised so that the, hand can for entry of the hand. Behind the frame patch II, there is stitched a pocket lining I4 in order to create the back wall of the pocket.
In order to construct a pocket in accordance with my invention, I first make flap I3 with a lining I5l stitched thereto on one side beneath the flap with a stitched border `I6 defined by stitch line I1. I then lay flap I3 upside down with the lining I5 of the flap upwards upon the outside-material I0 as shown in. Fig. 2. I then sew the flap I3 horizontally together to a wigan 24 in one operation by stitching along line I8.
.Sufficient material of the upper unfinished portion of the flap should extend so that it vcan be caught when the upper stitching 30 is made.
I then take a pocket facing 2U to which has been stitched, by stitching 2|, across the upper portion a piece of pocketing material 22 similar to the louter material I0 and lay such pocket facing material 20 together with the pocketing material 22 parallel with the stitched flap. I then stitch the pocket facing 20 'and Wigan 24 together horizontally by stitching 23, in order to create a horizontal border across the top of the pocket.
I then cut the horizontal opening 26 of the pocket. I then turn 'ap I3 downward. I then turn the pocket facing 20 over. I then make a o lining pocket facing 21 having the upper portion lined with material 28. This lining pocket facing may be made with a cash pocket V29 or without a cash pocket as desired bythe garment maker. I then lay the lining pocket facing 21 over the opening 26 and the pocket facing 2II`. I then stitch the lining pocket facing at the upper'edge together with the flap I3 by stitching 3U.
I then lay a pocket pattern on the front face of the outer material` I0 with the upper portion parallel with the pocket opening 26. The width of the pattern at the upper portion is approximately the width of flap I3. I then mark around the patternwith marking chalk. I thenA stitch along the marked chalk line through the outer material IU, the pocket facing material 20, including the upper portion 22, and the lining pocket facing 21, creating a stitch line 3I. I
then take a ller material 33, such as a soft cord or soft material and on the back of the outer material I0 I place such filler material 33 against the inner vstitch line 3| and then stitch along an outer stitch line 32 which is gauged by a magv chine gauge device, vcreating such outer stitch line 32 exactly parallel and the same distance from the inner stitch line 3 I. As the outer stitch line 32 is made by the needle of the machine, the iiller 33 is placed tightly against the inner stitch line 3| so that a raised portion I2 is created by the stitching 3| and stitching 32. I have found that it is good'practice to allow the filler 33, to extend approximately one inch above the opening 26. I then stitch horizontally by stitching 34 the uppermost horizontal stitch line and as this stitching is made the extended portions of the filler 33 are caught beneath stitching 34 in order to prevent the cord from becoming displaced.
It Will thus be seen that a pocket is created by this method which creates a raised portion I2 because of the ller 33 which is caught between stitching 3| and 32 which gives the appearance of a frame pocket together with an inserted pocketap.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made. inv the details of yconstruction Without `departing from the general spirit of invention as set forth in the appended claim.
I claim:
The method of making a garment pocket which comprises stitching a Wigan horizontally behind an outer material, stitching a pocketing material horizontally to said Wigan and outer material,F
said pocketing material having an upper reinforcing material stitched thereto, cutting a horizontal opening through said outer material and Wigan, stitching a lining pocket'facing to said outerl material over said horizontal opening and stitching said pocket facing material to said outer material.
