s claims. (c1. 2-'25m This invention relates to improvements in safety pockets for shirts and coats and also uniform jackets.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved safety pocket having `means incorporated therein for preventing the loss of a pen or pencil once the same has been clipped over the safety device incorporated in the said pocket.

Another object of the invention is to provide a round cord or beading sewed in the outer wall of a pocket adjacent the top thereof, whereby a pen or pencil will be clipped over the cord or beading when placed in the pocket to securely hold and lock the same in position therein.

A further object of the invention is to provide a safety bead for a pocket adapted to be sewed to a portion of or the full width of a pocket, or to the closure flap of a pocket, in which event, the flap will be formed with an aperture therethrough for the reception of a pen or pencil.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved safety pocket for pens and pencils which will be highly efficient in use and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.

Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shirt provided with a apless pocket having the inventive concept incorporated therein;

Figure 4 is an enlarged front elevation of a iiap-type pocket having a pen or pencil opening formed through the flap and the inventive concept incorporated in the pocket;

Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specication and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a shirt I having a pocket on the breast portion thereof formed with a forwardly extending outer wall 2 which is sewed at its opposite sides 3 and bottom 4 to the body I of the shirt. The upper end of the wall 2 of the pocket is formed with an infolded hem in which a cord 5 of any desired material is received. Stitching 6 is run above taken on the line and below the cord 5, through'the double thickness of material for supporting the cord :5 in :a sealed or'closed pocket. Lines of stitching I and 8 are sewed through the hem at the upper .and lower edges thereof, respectively, to further reinforce the upper end of the said pocket.

It will be apparent that when a pen or pencil with an attached clip 9 is placed in the pocket with the clip 9 overlying the cord 5, it will be practically impossible to remove the pen or pencil from the pocket without deliberately pulling the clip free from its position over the cord 5, thus preventing the accidental loss of the pen or pencil.

In Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, there is illustrated a pocket 2 having an overlying closure flap I0 sewed at II to the shirt I. The upper end of the front wall 2 of the pocket will be turned inwardly and downwardly to form a hem, and transversely extending spaced rows of stitching I2 and I3 will be sewed through the hem at the top and bottom thereof. A button I4 will be suitably secured to the upper end of the pocket wall 2 in any desired manner.

The flap I0 of the pocket will comprise a double thickness of material between which a section of cord or beading I 5 will be secured in the enclosing pocket formed by the stitching I6 and I1 immediately above and below said cord or beading I5, and extending through the double thickness of material. A button hole I3 Will be formed through the iiap I0 to receive the button I4, and will be reinforced by the stitching I9 and 20, while a row of stitching 2| is extended across the lower end of said flap I Il.

An aperture 22 will be formed between the upper end of the flap I 0 and the shirt front I adjacent one end of the flap, to receive a pen cr pencil 23, as it is placed in the pocket 2, with its upper end visible above the flap I0, and with its clip 9V locked over the cord or beading I5.

From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised a highly eiiicient locking and supporting means for securing a pen or pencil in a pocket, either with or without a pocket closure flap, and a construction which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.

While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted :o without departure from the spirit of the invenion.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In combination with a shirt, a safety pocket y therefor including a forward pocket Wall sewed at its opposite sides and bottom to said shirt, a closure flap for said pocket sewed to said shirt to overlie the upper end of said pocket, said ap being formed with a pen or pencil receiving aperture extending through a portion of the seam formed by sewing the closure iiap to said shirt, and a safety cord secured to the upper end of said flap.

2. In combination with a shirt, a safety pocket therefor including a forward pocket wall sewed at its opposite sides and bottom to said shirt, a closure ap for said pocket sewed to said shirt to overlie the upper end of said pocket, said flap being formed with a pen or pencil receiving aperture extending through a portion of the seam formed by sewing the closure ap to said shirt, the upper end of said ap being formed with a transversely extending sealing pocket, and a safety cord or binding positioned in said sealing pocket engageable by the clip of a pen or pencil when placed through said aperture in said ap.

3. In combination with a shirt, a safety pocket therefor including a forward pocket wall sewed at its opposite sides and bottom to said shirt, a closure flap for said pocket sewed to said shirt to overlie the upper end of said pocket, said nap being formed with a pen or pencil receiving aper' ture extending through a portion of the seam formed by sewing the closure ap to said shirt and having a double thickness of material, spaced lines of stitching extending transversely through said flap adjacent its upper end forming a concealed recess, and a safety cord or binding in said recess adapted to be engaged by the clip of a pen or pencil when placed in said pocket to secure the same against accidentally slipping from said pocket.
