As will herein appear, the structure by which theseoand'lrelatedjobjeatseare obtained within this invention may assume different forms according to the shape and mode of operation of the holder. That taken for illustration is a rotary type holder, as shown in the accompanying drawing.

The lip-stick proper, marked I, is held in an elevator 2, organized to slide in an inner tube 3 with its integral operating lug 4, projecting through a slot 3a in such tube and into engagement with another slot 6 formed in or by a surrounding and relatively rotary tube 1, the arrangement being such that relative rotationof the concentric tubes advances and retracts the elevator, as will be understood.

The end of the inner tube is made contractible as to its diameter by being slotted, and the lug slot 3a, extended to the end of the tube, is sufficient for this purpose. The contractibility thus provided is utilized for clamping and holding a body 8 which may be a plain thumb-piece or an ornament, or both. It is shown as molded out of a so-called plastic compound, preferably transparent and shouldered to provide a part of reduced diameter by which it fits into the end of the tube 3, and it is clamped by it.

The clamping eifect is produced by a constrictor ring 9, previously placed on the tube and then forced toward the body when the latter has been inserted, so as to contract the tube upon it. With the proper selection of dimensions the attachment is extremely secure and permanent for all practical purposes, though capable of removal, if necessary. If the lower end of the tube is serrated, as indicated at 31), so as to bite into the plastic, the attachment is made specially secure against any rotary slipping of the body. The arrangement forms a ring-clutch and while the ring can be a plain clutch ring, it is preferably made with its outside diameter approximating that of the plastic body 8 and burnished to show on the exterior, and thus add to the ornamental efiect.

It is preferred that the body, whether transparent or otherwise, shall have a suflicient axial dimension to serve as a thumb-piece or grip memher, by means of which the tube 3 canbe easily turned to actuate the elevator. For this purpose, the body shouldbe approximately as long as the diameter of the tube, and in the present case it is corrugated. The constrictor ring 9 also in the present case constitutes means whereby the tube may be rotated.

It may be observed that by using the lower end of the slot 3 a as the means for making the tube 3 contractible, the elevator lug 4 can be entered through it before the ring 9 is assembled on the tube as shown in Fig. 2, the elevator being thereafter confined in the tube between such ring and the top end of the slot which forms the uppe abutment for the lug.

With the body clutched in the inner tube 3, the device is completed by locating the outer sleeve 1 on the tube between the end flange II on the latter and the ring 9, by which it is held against endwise displacement. The spiral slot 6 in this tube extends from end to end so that it can be expanded for this assembly and when it has thus been placed, the pushing of the outer case l2 over it, holds the parts assembled by its own frictional contact with the sleeve which presses outward. 'Such case I 2 is pushed down against the clutch ring 9, as indicated inFig. 1, thus concealing the spiral slot.

The cap or cover l3 fits over the casing and the clutch ring 9. Friction tongues M are located at appropriate places to 'hold the parts against too free movement.

Iclaim:

1. In a lip-stick holder of the type having relatorring slidable on said tube for contracting it,

said ring constituting means whereby said tube may be rotated. 3

In a lip-stick holder of the typehaving relatively rotary concentric tubes and a lip-stick elevator, the inner tube being formed with a slot to receive a lug on the elevatorand for making said tube contractible, a thumb-piece in the end of said tube and a constrictor ring slidable on the tube for clamping it upon said thumb-piece;

A lip-stick holder comprising a tubular structure, a lip-stick elevator slidable therein, an elevator operating member therefor comprising an ornamental body located in the end of such structure, and amanually movable member for contracting the structure upon said body thereby removably securing it to said holder.

A lip-stick holder comprising a tubular structure, containing a lip-stick elevator, an operating means therefor comprising a transparent body secured in the end of said structure, a device behind it visible from the exterior through such. body, a member on such structure for contracting it upon said body, said member being movable on said structure for the release of said body and the removal of said device.

8. -A lip-stick holder comprising a tubular structure containing a sliding elevator, an elevator operating means comprising a rotary thumbpiece body in the end of said structure, and a ring on said structure for contractingit upon the body to form a non-rotatable connection therewith, said ring and body both being exposed to be grasped for operating the elevator.

9. A lip-stick holder comprising inner and outer concentric tubes, a lip-stick elevator slidable in the inner tube and provided with a lug projecting into slots in both said tubes, a thumbpiece, one of said tubes being contractible, a ring for contracting said tube upon the thumbpiece, and a cover fitting over said tubes and abutting said ring.
