ROOF GUTTER PROTECTING DEVICE Martin Schweda, St. Albans, N. Y.
Application October 24, 1942, Serial No. 463,229
1 Claim. (C1.108-'-30) This invention relates to roof gutter protecting devices.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described including a screen protector for a roof gutter which is removably mounted thereon and also including means on the roof to hold the screen protector in place on the gutter.
A further object of this invention is to provide a screen protector fora gutter which may be applied to gutters already installed.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable screen protector for a gutter which shall be relatively cheap to manufacture, easy to installfland yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements,
and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a partial prospective view of a roof provided with a gutter and a screen protector thereof embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig, 3 is a prospective view of a device for holding the screen down on the gutter before bending pin portion thereof;
Fig. 4 is a prospective view of said holding down device; and i Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the screen inclined upwardly toward the roof.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l0 designates a roof and H designates a gutter mounted thereon. The roof I!) may be of any usual construction and is here shown for the purpose of illustration 'as comprising an undersupport IS on which is mounted singles 14 such as slate shingles or any other suitable type. The gutter may also be of usual construction and top of the gutter. The screen cover comprises a long strip 2| of screening material which may be of any desired gage of wire mesh. The strip 2| is preferably wider than the top of the gutter and-attached to the front edge thereof is a sheet metal edging 22. The edging 22 has a channel portion 23 opening rearwardly and receiving the edge of the screening sheet orstrip 2|. Extending from the channel 23 is a downwardly and forwardly folded channel 24 adapted to, removably engage the flange IQ of the gutter Attached to the rear edge of the screening strip 2| is a reinforcing edging 25 of sheet metal, the same comprising a folded over piece of sheet metal gripping the rear edge of the screen. The rear edge of the screen 20 rests on the inclined roof and may be either in horizontal position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing or sloping upwardly toward the roof at any desired angle.
Means is provided to hold the screen down on the gutter and roof. To this end there is mounted on the roof a plurality of fastening devices 3|]. Each device comprises a flat plate 3|, to the center of which there is fixed a pin 32 extending at right angles to the plate. The upper end 33 of the pin is bent downwardly. The de vice 30 is mounted on the roof by slipping the base 3| thereof beneath the shingles and the pin 32 thereof between adjacent shingles. The bent portion 33 projects forwardly toengage the rear edge 25 of the screen.
Obviously if it is desired to have the screen 20 at an inclination, the screen is wider than is comprises a bottom Wall I5, a back wall l6 con- L tacting the building and a front wall I1. Ex-
tending upwardly from the back wall N5 is a flange l8 contacting the roof structure. Extending rearwardly from the upper end of the front wall I1 is a flange |9.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a screen covering 20 to cover the shown in the drawing and the devices 30 are moved upwardly on the roof. It will now be understood that the screen 20 prevents leaves or other debris from falling into the gutter.
The channel flange 24 is adapted to embrace the horizontal flange i9 of the gutter, so that the binding U-strip 22 will overlie the flange l9, and the screen 20 will be held against outward displacement from the gutter, which it covers. The malleable prongs or pins 32 engage the roof side of the screen, to prevent displacement toward the roof, and when bent over the reinforced inner edge of the screen, serve to prevent vertical displacement.
It is obvious, therefore, that by turning the holding devices 30 so that the overlying pins 32 may be shifted from holding positions, that the inner edge of the screen may be lifted andlthe screen removed, so that the gutter, may be completely cleaned, or a new screen placed in position.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination with a gutter having an inwardly directed flange on the outer upright wall thereof, of a screen having a reinforcing binding strip on its outer edge and a channel flange thereon adapted to engage the flange of the gutter to support; the binding strip of the screen on the flange of the gutter and to prevent outward and vertical displacement of the screen on the gutter, and a plurality of devices for holding the inner edge of the screen on the roof to which the gutter is attached, each of said devices consisting of a plate insertable' under confronting shingles and an upstanding pin adapted to engage the inner edge of the screen and to be deflected over the inner edge of the screen to prevent both inward and upward displacement of the screen, and being adapted to permit of the removal of the screen from the gutter, when the 'pins of said devices are turned or bent backward.
