This invention relates to improvements in interlocking flashing plates, and more particularly to flashing plates for fastening roofing strips adjacent the inner walls of copings surrounding a roof.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a coping flashing plate which will be waterproof and which may be installed with a minimum amount of effort.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an interlocking flashing strip'of the above mentioned character having interlocking flanges and means for holding'the flanges interlocked to retain the roofing strip and form a flashing guard thereover.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an interlocking flashing strip which may be easily removed for the purpose of making repairs and which is held in interlocking engagement by means of a locking strip detachably secured to the interlocking joint.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description, forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure l is a vertical cross-sectional view of a roof coping and roof edge showing the manner n which the roofing is flashed to the coping and illustrating the arrangement of the coping strip interlocked with the flashing strip;
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the interlocking flashing strip in position and being locked in position by means of a locking strip capable of being removed for the purpose of unlocking the flashing strip and making repairs;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view illustrating the manner in which the locking strip is inserted to hold the flashing strip in interlocked position;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the coping flashing strip showing the configuration thereof and illustrating the lower lip for interlocking engagement with the lower flashing strip;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the lower flashing strip illustrating the upper portion being provided with a locking lip for engagement with the coping flashing strip locking lip; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the locking device employed for holding the flashing strips in their assembled positions.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustrating the invention, like reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference character 5 will generally be employed to designate a coping surrounding a roofing 6 having a covering I terminating at the edges in an upwardly extending flange 8 supported by a cornice 9 extending angularly between the coping5 and the roof floor 6. The usual joist beams Ill are provided and are supported by vertical uprights I I.
The cornice strips 9 join wooden coping strips [3 as at M and may be fastened by any suitable means such as nails or the like.
The invention comprises extending the angular flange 8 of the roofing floor covering 1 upwardly to the wooden coping strip l3 where it is extended for a short distance as at l5 and finally terminates along the upper edge of the Wooden coping strip 13 as at [6. Waterproofing material such as asphaltcmay be provided to fasten the free end N5 of the roofing strip to the wooden coping strip [3.
Embedded in the upper end of the coping 5 is a coping flashing strip I! having one of its marginal edges as at l8 bent upwardly to form an anchoring strip. The opposite edge of the coping flashing strip I1 is bent downwardly as at I9 to lie flush with the inner Wall of the coping 5 and then extends outwardly as at 20 to provide a shelf for the exclusion of rain and other elements of weather. The outwardly extending shelf 20 is bent upon itself as at 2| to form a downwardly and inwardly extending flange 22 which is bent upon itself as at 23 thereby forming an upwardly and inwardly extending locking strip 24.
It will be noted that the locking strip 24 terminates a short distance under the shelf 20 and in spaced relation from the coping 5.
The roof flashing strip comprises a sheet of metal or the like 25 having the lowermost edge bent outwardly as at 26 to form a flange and a protecting strip and is return bent as at 27 to form a beaded edge, The opposite edge of the roof flashing strip 25 is angularly bent as at 23 to form an overlying portion adapted to extend above the upper edge of the wooden coping strip I3 and thereby protect the roofing edge I6. Extending upwardly from the angularly bent portion 28 is a strip 29 adapted to lie flush with the inner wall of the coping 5 until it reaches a point adjacent the shelf 20 of the coping flashing strip I! where it is bent as at 30 to form an interlocking portion 3! bent downwardly as at 32 to form a locking strip 33. It will be noted that the outwardly extending portion 3| abuts against the lower edge of the shelf 20 and that the free interlocking portion 33 is presented to the downwardly extending portion 22 of the shelf 20.
Means is provided for holding the coping flashing strip and roof flashing strip in interlocked engagement and comprises an interlocking strip 34 shown in Figure 6 that includes a flat strip 35 having one of its edges as at 36 bent inwardly and the opposite edge bent upon itself as at 31 to form a flange 38. The flange 3B terminates in an angular portion 39 having the free edge 40 slightly bent inwardly to provide a curved sliding face adapted to interlock with the bend 30 in the roof flashing strip 25.
After the coping flashing strip and roof flashing strip are in the position as shown in Fig ure 1, the interlocking strip 34 is presented under the interlocking flange 24 and moves in the direction of the arrows as shown in Figure 3 so that it will assume the position shown in Figure 2.
When the interlocking strip 34 is in position as shown in Figure 2, the strip 35 engages the free edge of the inwardly turned flange 24 while the flange 39 of the interlocking strip 35 engages the bent portion as at 3B of the roofing strip 25 as does also the inwardly turned portion 36 or the interlocking strip 34. It will be noted that the interlocking strip 34 exerts a pressure, when in place; against the right angle portion 3! of the roofing strip to force the same upwardly into engagement with the shelf 2% thereby forming an interlocking arr-angement.
It is to be noted that the form oi the inven-. tion herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

In a roofflashing, a coping strip adapted to be embedded in a coping, such strip having portions adapted to extend downwardly and outwardly from the coping, a downwardly and inwardly bent flange formed on the outwardly bent portion, said downwardly and inwardly extending flange terminating in an upwardly and inwardly extending portion with its free edge in spaced relation to the outwardly extending portion to provide a resilient V-formation, a flashing strip mounted at right angles to the coping strip, an outwardly directed wall at the upper end of the flashing strip having an outwardly and downwardly directed flange adapted to underlie the outwardly extending portion of the coping strip and be interlockingly engaged with the downwardly and inwardly extending flange of the coping strip and a removable resilient strip of inverted substantially \lsformation mounted in the interfltting connection between the coping and flashing strips with one of the side portions of the resilient strip having the free edge of the upwardly and inwardly. directed flange of the coping strip engaged therewith intermediate its side edges, the bight of the resilient strip being engaged with the outwardly directed portion of the flashing strip and an upstanding flange carried by the other side portion of the resilient strip being flatly engaged with the flashing strip, 1
