' SECURING MEMBER- Barney Hanson, Miami, Fla.
Application November 16, 1939, Serial No. 304,851
6 Claims- This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in reglet and counterflashing securing members.
The invention relating to flashing constructions, there is provided a reglet preferably made from sheet metal and adapted to be secured to a part of a building, such as a chimney, parapet wall or the like at a point above the building roof and having a counterflashing plate interfittingly engaged therewith and locked thereto by an adjustable clip which is readily operable to permit removal of the counterflashing plate for repair or replacement or for the replacement of roofing felts that extends upwardly under the flashing construction.
"With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view of a roof structure with a wall rising therefrom with the reglet and counterflashing'plate attached to the wall construction and locked in assembled relation by the adjustable clip;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the wall above the roof structure with the flashing in position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of one of the members of the adjustable clip showing a slotted opening therein providing adjust ment between the twoparts of. the clip;
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing interfitting parts of the upper flashing plate or reglet and the upper section of the clip.
In the accompanying drawing, the roof is designated in general by the reference character in with a chimney, parapet wall II or the like perpendicularly rising from the roof. A cant strip I2 extends between the roof II] and wall II and the covering for said roof includes a felt or other flexible strip I3 extending over the roof I0, the cant I2 bent upwardly for the desired distance on the outer face of the wall I I. Gravel I4 or the like is illustrated in Figure 1 as, being adhesively or otherwise secured to the flexible sheet I3 overlying the roof I0.
The flashing construction includes an upper.
flashing plate or reglet with a horizontal portion I5 embedded in the wall I I during the construction of the latter, the reglet further including a depending plate portion I6 flatly engaged with the outer face of the wall I I, the wall I6 carrying an outwardly directed horizontal wall portion I1 that has a depending and inwardly inclined strip I8 thatterminates in an inwardly and upwardly inclined flange strip I9, the lower edge of the strip 58 and flange strip I9 being disposed in a plane above the upper end of the flexible roof sheet I3 as illustrated in Figure 1.
The counterflashing plate associated with the reglet includes a flat Wall portion 20 that flatly engages the outer face of the wall II, the upper end of the wall 2!] carrying an outwardly directed horizontal wall portion 2| that flatly engages the bottom face of the wall portion ll of the reglet, the wall portion 2I being bent downwardly and outwardly to provide a flange strip 22 that engages the inner face of the strip I8 of the reglet. The lower edge of the straight wall portion 20 of the counterflashing plate approximates the plane of the lower edge of the strip iii of the reglet and said plate section 29 is angularly directed outwardly as at 23 away from theouter face of the wall II to provide a pocket 24, into which the upper end of the flexible roofing sheet I3 extends. The lower edge of the outwardly directed wall section 23 of the counterflashing plate carries a channel member having a side wall 25 extending at an angle from the lower edge of the wall section 23 toward the building wall I I, a bottom wall 26 and an outwardly directed opposite side wall 21, the bottom wall 26 being provided with drain openings 28. The angle edge connection between the side wall 25 and bottom wall 26 of the channel member at the lower end of the counterflashing plate bears against the fiem'ble roofing sheet I3 as shown in Figure 1.
The locking clip for holding the reglet and counterflashing plate in assembled relation as well as moving the counterflashing plate into binding engagement with the flexible roofing sheet I3 comprises a pair of adjustably connected members, preferably formed of sheet metal, the upper member being interfittingly engaged with the reglet and upper end of the counterflashing plate while the lower member thereof is bindingly and 'interfittingly engaged with the counterflashing plate. The upper section of the adjustable clip comprises a plate portion 29 having a portion 30 extending ,at an angle therefrom that is angularly bent and folded upon itself as shown at 3| with the terminal end of the return-bent portion bent as at 32 to provide a groove or channel 33 for the reception of the flange strip I9 of the 55 reglet and when so disposed, the upper terminal end 34 of the return-bent portion 3| is engaged with the bottom face of the wall section 2| of the counterflashing plate as shown in Figure 1. The lower section of the clip comprises a flat plate section 35 engaged with the inner face of the plate section of the upper section of the clip, the upper end of the plate 25 being angularly bent substantially 'at right angles thereto as at 36 with the free end of the bent portion 36 further bent toprovide a flange strip 31 that is engaged with the inclined wall section 23 of the counterflashing plate. The lower end of the flat plate section 35 of the lower section of the clip is angularly bent in a downward and inward direction as at 38 with the lower end of said section 38 bent outwardly and upwardly as at 39 to provide a lower bearing foot, that is received in the channel member at the lower end of the flashing plate.
The reglet is embedded in the wall ll during the construction of the latter, the flexible roofing sheet l3 then laid with a portion thereof extending upwardly over the cant l2 and outer face of the wall II as shown in Figure 1, being preferably adhesively secured. The counterflashing plate is then interflttingly engaged with the reglet and the adjustable sections of the clip are moved toward each other by means of the slotted opening 40 in the flat plate section 29 of the upper section of the clip in combination with the headed screw bolt v H that passes through an opening in the plate section 35 of the lower part of the clip for the reception of the thumb nut 52 on the projecting threaded end of the bolt that extends through the slotted opening 40. The upper section of the adjustablelclip is manipulated to cause the flange strip I9 of the reglet to be received in the channel 33 as shown in Figure 1 with the upper terminal end 34 of the upper clip section engaged with the wall section 2! of the counterflashing plate. The lower section of the clip is then lowered with respect to the upper section by means of the adjustable connection between the two sections for moving the flange 31 upon the lower section of the clip into binding engagement with the inclined wall portion 23 of the counterflashing plate while the foot 39 at the lower end of the lower clip section is received in the channel at the lower end of the lower clip section for binding engagement therein and for moving the angle shoulder at one side of the channel into binding engagement with the flexible roofing sheet I3 with the clip parts then looked in fixed relation by the thumb nut 42. The reglet and counterflashing plate are held relatively immovable by the adjustable clip for the retention of the upper edge of the flexible roofing sheet l3 in its pro-per position.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit, and scope of the invention as claimed.
