Application February 2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in roof edging strips particularly intended for use in connection with the edge portion of a roof for securing the flexible roof covering in place.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a roof edging strip having an anchoring portion and a U- or V-shaped portion between which the edge of the roofing material may be clamped and secured in place.
A further object of this invention is to provide a roof edging strip having openings in the U- shaped portion for allowing drainage of water which may find its way in between the clamping portions of the edging strip.
A further object of this invention is to provide an edging strip which may be formed from a single sheet of metal and perforated in the desired location for the passage of fastening elements such as nails, after which the strip may be bent on rollers or dies to the desired formation.
The roof edging strips may also be made by eliminating the anchoring portion and being otherwise made and applied in the same manner as described.
A still further object of this invention is to provide an edging strip for roofs adapted to extend downwardly beyond the planking to form a guard and prevent water from finding its way up between the molding strips and in between the rafters and planking.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description, taken with the drawing, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a fragmentary portion of a roof edge illustrating the invention as applied thereto for securing the flexible roofing in place;
Figure 2 is a side plan view of the roofing strip illustrating the manner in which the fiexible roofing is securely clamped along its lower edge between the edging strip to prevent the entrance of wind thereunder which usually results in buckling and bending of the roofing strip;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, illustrating the manner in which the strip is applied to the roof edge;

In the drawing, the reference character 5 designates a blank strip of sheet metal preferably galvanized or copper and such blank is provided with a series of perforations 6 along one marginal edge and a series of perforations 1 along the opposite marginal edge. A series of openings 8 is formed intermediate the edges of the metal strip to form drain openings after the metal strip has been bent along the line 9 to form an anchoring portion l0 and bent upon itself as at ll to form a substantially U-shaped trough portion as shown clearly in Figures 3, 4 and 5.
The roof edging strip 5 is adapted to be secured to the overhanging roof board A which extends along the edge portion of the roof and is secured to the rafters B. Trim strips D and E are also secured to the rafters B which protrude over the edge of the housing or building wall. Roofing nails [2 are adapted to be passed through the opening 1 in the anchor portion I0 of the edging strip for securing the strip in place and the downwardly extending portion l3 of the strip 5 is adapted to lie against the edge of the roof board A.
Strip roofing material I4 is secured to the roof boards in the usual manner by means of nails and the free edge l5 of the roofing strip I4 is inserted into the trough formed by the U-shaped portion I l of the roof edging strip. Roofing nails I! are driven through the openings 6 and through the inserted edge l5 of the roofing strip to enter the outer edge of the roof board for further anchoring the roof edging strip to the roof.
It will be noted that the openings 8 are located at the bight of the trough in order to allow water finding its way down between the free edge of the trough and the roofing strip IE to be drained and thereby preventing rotting and deterioration. This also allows air to reach the: fabric clamped in the metal toprolong the life of the same.
It will be understood that the strips 5 may be of any desired length or they may comprise short lengths joined together or placed end to end in order to receive a continuous strip of roofing fabric.
2. iii A It will be noted that the portion I 0 which is anchored to the roof board A is formed at right angles to one side of the trough portion l3 so thatrwhen the strip is applied to the flashing A it will be necessary to spring the metal to cause the anchoring portion I 0 and downwardly ex-- tending legs I3 of the trough portion to conform to the contour of the roof board A.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to with but departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub-joined claims.
I claim:-
1. The combination with a roof edge, of an edging strip comprising a flat anchor portion and a U-shaped trough depending from one side edge thereof and below the roof edge with the upper edge of the trough lying substantially in the plane of the anchor portion, said trough having drain openings in the bottom thereof and adapted to receive the depending overhanging edge of a 2,63Q,96? i f g a a H flexible roofing strip secured over the anchor por.
tion of the roof edging strip, means for securing the roofing strip in the trough and anchoring the roofing strip and trough to the outer vertical face of the roof edge for the protection thereof and the lower overhanging edge of the roofing strip terminating in spaced relation to the bottom of the U-shaped trough and the drain openings therein.
2. The combination with a roof edge, of an edging strip comprising a U-shaped trough depending below the vertical face of the roof edge with the upper edge of the trough lying substantially in the plane of the upper surface of the spaced relation to the bottom of the U-shaped trough and the drain openings therein.
