WALL-JOINING SECTION MEMBER 4 Sheets-Sheet 4- Filed June 23, 1966 4 l Inventor":
4 1405 6'0'BEA Maw ATTOKA/E) United States Patent 3,410,038 WALL-JOINING SECTION MEMBER Klaus Giibel, Zeughausstr. 41, Trier, Germany Filed June 23, 1966, Ser. No. 559,969 Claims priority, application 9Germany, June 25, 1965,
43, 87 4 Claims. (Cl. 52-62) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An elongated hollow bracket spaced above and extending parallel to a flat roof deck is recessed in a parapet or a side wall of a higher portion of a building upstanding from such deck. A margin of a flexible roofing sheet is wrapped around a clamping stiffener and snapped into sockets of the bracket to clamp and anchor the sheet margin. Such flexible sheet extends downward from the bracket to overlie the roof margin. The bracket includes an overhanging portion which protects from weather the clamped sheet margin and a series of apertures Venting the bracket hollow to atmosphere. The space between the parapet side or upright wall face and the adjacent side of the roofing sheet is vented to the bracket hollow by a second series of apertures.
There are particular difficulties in sealing and ventilating flat roofs in cases where the roof end abuts rising masonry. Conventionally, the sheet roofing which covers the junction between the fiat roof and the rising masonry, whether an edge portion of the roof covering or flashing or a joining strip overlying the roof cover, is secured to the side of the rising masonry by adhesive bonding or nailing or screwing or the like. To this end, side closure or bracket members are used which are recessed in the rising masonry and which cover the joint i.e. the rising portion of the sheet roofing.
Unfortunately, these known members fail to ventilate the roof; it has been found in practice that temperature changes cause expansions and contractions of the roofing so that settlements and transverse displacements occur which make a moving joint essential. Also, vapour pressure equalisation must be effected via the joint, so that ventilation is essential.
The invention starts from this prior art and proposes a wall-joining structure for securing sheet roofing, more particularly for the junction of a flat roof and a parapet or upwardly extending wall, characterised in that the sheet edge-anchoring and covering bracket is formed with a bottom air entry opening and with an air exit opening in the outer wall. Advantageously, the air exit opening is protected against weather entry at the top and the side by a roofing sheet. The retaining means for securing the roofing sheet margin is disposed between the air entry opening and the air exit opening. Very advantageously, the retaining means includes a clamping element which anchors the roofing sheet margin securely in the bracket without damaging the roofing sheet; the roofing sheet margin and the bracket are relatively slidable, so that differential changes in dimensions due to temperature variations are not transferred between the bracket and the roofing cover.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical section showing how a first embodiment of a roofing sheet-retaining member according to the invention is used in joining roofing for a flat roof to a parapet or wall; and
FIGURES 2 to 8 are vertical sections through alterhate forms of the ventilating sheet margin-retaining member of the invention.
Referring to FIGURE 1 a parapet or upper story wall 4 is abutted by a flat roof comprising a concrete ceiling 1, an insulating layer 2 and a triple-layer cover 3 of sheet roofing.
An additional roofing layer covers the joint and is shown as a cover strip 5 which rests on the roof cover 3. The cover strip extends downward from a horizontally elongated hollow bracket member 6 and along the roof away from the wall a suflicient distance to cover adequately the margins of roofing layers 3. The bracket 6 extends horizontally along the parapet or wall 4 above the flat roof and is recessed into the masonry and secured by a screw 7 or a retaining projection 8 which is embedded in the masonry.
On the underside of the bracket 6 is an air entry opening 9 which communicates between the bracket hollow and a ventilating space 10' between the ceiling 1 and the insulating layer 2 of the flat roof. There is a corresponding air exit opening 11 in the bracket member outer wall, so that any water vapour can escape to atmosphere through bracket 6. Weather, such as rain, snow and wind, is kept out of the air exit opening 11 by a downwardly opening angle overhang 12, 13.
Retaining sockets 14 for securing the margin of roofing sheet or strip 5 are disposed between the two openings 9 and 11 and receive a clamping stiffener 15 around which the margin of the roofing sheet is wrapped for clamping and, therefore, retaining the margin of the strip 5. The sockets are sufficiently deep to retain stiffener 15 and strip 5 securely while permitting movement of the strip relative to the clamp as it expands and contracts slightly in response to temperature changes.
Referring to FIGURE 2, the bracket member shown therein is similar to that of FIGURE 1 except for a modified clamping stiffener 15, the effective width of which can be varied by bending the stiffener about the central crease to move the stiffener edges apart or closer together to suit the thickness of the roofing sheet 5 which it is required to clamp. The bracket has holes 16 for mounting screws and sockets 14 of somewhat different configuration than those shown in FIGURE 1.
In the embodiment shown in FIGURES 3, 4 and 5, the air entry 9 and exit opening 11 are coplanar in the lower side of the modified bracket means. In FIGURE 3 the clamping stiffener 15 has a flattened tubular cross section; in FIGURE 4, the stiffener has an inverted U cross-sectional shape; and in FIGURE 5 an arcuate stiffener somewhat similar to that of FIGURE 1 is shown.
FIGURE 6 shows a bracket which is formed with an air exit opening 11 in an upright wall and an angular overhang 17 prevents entry of rain or snow to the bracket interior through opening 11.
A similar overhang 17 is provided in the embodiment shown in FIGURE 7 and is disposed near the air exit opening 11 which in this embodiment extends through a bracket side inclined downwardly and inwardly toward the upright wall face from overhang 17. The end of the bracket inclined wall remote from the overhang terminates in a hook forming a channel 19. A vertical backing member 18 for cover strip 5 has a complemental hook on its upper end and the cover strip is clamped in channel 19 by the cooperating bracket and backing member hooks.
Referring to FIGURE 8, the bracket retaining means for the roofing sheet is a horizontal tube 19 having a longitudinal slot for inserting the roofing sheet ,rnargin edge portion. The air exit opening 11 faces downward.
A preferred use for the closure member or bracket according to the invention as shown in the various embodiments in the drawings is for junctions of a flat roof abutting a parapet or upper story wall; however, the bracket can be fitted directly to the lateral edge of a flat roof to ventilate the same.
