G. P. ORDWAY.
Drawers.
No. 236,509. Patented Jan. 11, I881.
WITN] EESES N. PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHZR. WASNIN UNITED STATES GEORGE F. ORDWAY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENT, TO JULIA M. ORDWAY, OF SAME PLACE DRAWERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,509, dated January 11, 1881. Application filed October 21, 1880. (No model.)
drawers.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of a pair of ladys drawers embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of drawers made in the'old way.
It will be seen that in making drawers by the old method, as seen in Fig. 2, each leg is made with but one seam, (the seam a,) which extends from the lower edge, .90, to the seat y. Of course the upper portion of the leg is made much larger than the lower portion; hence the portion a of the seam extends farther than the part a from the front of the leg. Therefore in cutting the goods there is alarge waste between the parts a and a, more especially :5 immediately below the point a. In my i1nproved drawers (shown in Fig. 1) a gore or.
gores, b, is inserted in the seat, and the seam It extends from the lower edge, a, to the said gore 1). Thus there is great saving in cloth obtained, as there are always waste pieces enough to provide for the cutting of the gores. Again, in cutting drawers made according to those shown in Fig. 2, the following difficulty presents itself: The uniform width of the cloth is such that there is too much cloth for one leg but not enough for two legs to be out side by side; hence there is a heavy waste.
In my improved drawers I provide a front seam, c, which extends from top to bottom of each leg, thus making, in addition to the rear or inside seam, a, the front or outside seam, c. The width of the cloth will allow of three haltlegs being cut, all of which can, of course, be utilized, while the old style of drawers allowed one whole leg to be cut, and left useless cloth 5 enough for a half-leg.
The seams are made neatly, so as not to annoy the wearer, and the articles can be sold at a much cheaper rate than formerly.
Having thus fully describtd my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a pair of drawers constructed with the rear or inside seam, a, and the front or outside seam, c, in the leg, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
a pair of drawers constructed with the rear or inside seam, a, and the gore or gores b in the seat in each leg, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE F. ORDWAY.
