Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application January 29, 1944, Serial No. 520,263

This invention relates to improvements in weft replenishing looms and it is the general object of theinvention to provide improved mechanism by which a shuttlecan be replenished by bobbins drawnfrom three stacksof a four-stack magaj zine. 1 v
In the weaving of certain fabrics using two types of weft, one of the wefts, is consumed much more rapidly than the other and'the shuttle weaving the first type requires replenishment much more rapidly than the other shuttle. An
example of such fabrics are curtains which have a ground weaveof fine weft and stripes of a coarse decorative weft. In my copending'ap-v plication Serial No. 490,155, filed Junev 9, 1943,
to provide a selector stop I have shown a loom in which two stacks of the magazine may beused for the replenishment of one shuttle. That application sets forth a rocking lever which controls a stop having two positions and movable into and out of stopping efiect delivery of bobbins alternately from the two stacks for successive replenishments of the corresponding shuttle. It is animportant object of my present invention to provide means by which the principles set forth in the afore said application can be extended to apply to three stacks of bobbins. In'the type of weft replenishing mechanism to which my invention more particularly applies there are employed vertically reciprocable bobbin controlling lever which shall: be turned innone direction byi two bobbin releasers when they operate-and shall be turned in the opposite direction to return to normal starting position byia third releaser when the latter operates." InCthis way the lastof a 'se- I ries of releasers can be made to return the stop control lever to starting-position.
With these and other objects in viewwhich will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrange,- ment of parts hereinafter describediqand set forth. r i
In the. accompanying drawings, wherein a convenient embodiment of my invention isset forth, i Fig. 1 is aside elevation of a mult cell weft replenishingmechanismviewed: from the cenposition with respect to the stack selector to" releasers which have an up motion when transfer is initiated and then have a downmotion when the magazine is set for completion of transfer.
. It is another object of my present invention to provide means by which the principles set forth in the aforesaidapplication can beextended t apply to three stacks of bobbins.
H In the typeof weft replenishing mechanism to which my invention more particularly applies there are employed vertically reciprocable bobbinqreleasers which havean up motion when transfer is initiated and then havea down motion when the magazine is set for completion'of transfer. It is another object of my presentinvention to provide a lever which shall cooperate withthree stack releasers and assume three different positions derived from the three releasers.
A three-step stop is connected to thelever' and moves under control of the lever so that its stops become successively operative to register the selector with the three releasers, one at a time, in a definite rotation which will effect uniform depletion of thebobbins of the three stacks.
It is anotherobject of my present invention ter of the loom and having my invention applied thereto, i r
Fig. 2 is a vertical showing the parts in normal position, 1
Fig.3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the lever in the position which it occupies for delivery of bobbins from the second stack, I 1 Fig.4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the lever in position corresponding to the de livery ofbobbins from the third stack,
, Fig. 5' is a perspective vi w of the three-step stop which controls thexposition of theselector,
Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic view of a loom of' the type to which my invention, can be applied, ,Fig. 1 is a detail vertical section on line'I-l, Fig; l, on an enlarged scale,
r Fig. 8 is similar to a portion of Fig. 2 but indicating the operation of thelever actuating Referring to Fig. l, I have shown a loom frame l0 supporting a magazine M which in the present instance is ofthe' multi-fcolor type and is providedwith four stacks of bobbins 11,12, l3 and I4. The stack sof bobbins, l2 andl3 are all of the same general kind and preferably-are of coarse or heavy weft, while the stack I4 is of fine weft such as may be used for the weaving of the ground of citrtainfabrics. The stacks are associated with obbin releasers I5, l6, l1 and I8, each of which cooperates with a bobbin cradle l9 atthe lowerfendthereof. These releasers are normally down and the corresponding cradle empty, butwhen replenishment is indicated one of the releasers risesto rock its cradle in well-known manner to receive the bobbin from the associated stack, after which depression of the previously raised releaser rocks. the
section on line 2;! Fig.1,
casting 26 fromwhich project laterally front and that when box 50 is active spring 51 can move back fingers 21 and 28. A rod or shaft 29 carries" the casting 26 and slides horizontally in front and back bearings 30 and 3| carried by an inside;
plate 32 of the magazine on which the releasers are mounted. The shaft 29 has secured at the;
oted at 3! to the magazine.
The weft detector D is mounted in front of the. shuttle box B on the lay L and controls the posi-' tion of a pin 46 which cooperates with a lever 4| floating on the upper end of avertically reciprocating rod head or-block 42. Lever 4| is connected by rod 43 to an arm 44operatively associated with a fin 45 formed as part of the selector cast.- ing 26. When a-shuttle isin box B andthe. lay moves to front center, the detectorhas a. detecting operation and if sufficient weft is present. in the shuttle, pin 40 moves forwardly or to the right as'viewed in Fig. 1, out of the path of lever 4| as the latter is moved down a by a descending movement'of block "and rod 43 remains at rest. If, on the other hand, the detector indicates exhaustion of weft in the shuttle, pin 40 remains in the path of lever 4| and as theblock 42 descends it causes the lever to lower rod 43 and thereby rockthe selecto-rin 'a counterwlockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 2 to raise the releaserregistered with theselector. This angular movement of the selector occurs while the shuttle is at the magazine end of the loom; I
After the shuttle has been picked to the oppositeside of the loom and time has been allowed for shifting of shuttle boxes G at that end, see
Fig. 6,. block 42 rises and lifts lever 4|, thereby causing the, latter to raise rod 43 and rock the selector in a clockwise direction'as. viewed in Fig. 2 to lower the previously Iraised releaser. This rocking ofrthe selectoroccurs every second pick of the loom shortly after the interval during which the shuttle boxes shift. r
As shown in Fig. 6 a gang G of shuttle boxes at the left end of the loom includes upper and lower cells and 5|, whiohcontain shuttles S and respectively. By means of a box lifter rod 52 under control of pattern box shifting mechanism not shown the gang shifts so that the boxes 50 and .5I are alternately in active position and aligned with therace plate '53 of the .layL. In the. present. instance shuttle sf "carries coarse weftto be employed :as decorative stripes in a fabrichaving a fine ground wovenby weft carried in shuttles The gangtherefore is down when a coarse weft .is being woven and up when the fineweft is being woven. The stripes of coarse weft are narrow, generally comprising only two or four picks so that shuttle box 5| becomes active at frequentrintervals during theweaving operation.
- Extending from the gang G is a connector 55 which leads from the dropbox end to the magazine end of the l oomand' then extendsupwardly to be connected'tothe arm'56 of the previously described lever36. Lever 36: is so proportioned :each of the. releasers.
the idle inactive position shown in Fig. 2 when lever 36 to its extreme right hand position as viewed in Fig. 1 corresponding to the frontmost position of the selector 25, but when box 5| is active lever 36 moves to its rearmost position corresponding to registry of the selector 25 with the rear releaser l8. V v
The magazine has asecond shaftfllifl journaled in the nip-per part thereof and has fastened thereto a casting 6| provided with a shelf 6| for cooperation with dogs 62, one of which is pivoted on Ordinarily these dogs are the releaser is down. When a releaser is raised,
'15 rear end thereof a slotted collar 35 cooperating with the upper end of a positioning lever 36 p-ivposition.
.plate 32, but when any of these three releasers ,l 1, respectively,
however, its dog springs to the left as viewed in Fig. 2 tov its operating position above shelf 6| and upon subsequent depression of the releaser the -d'og'engagesthe shelfto turn shaft 66 in a clock- Wise direction as viewed in Fig. 2;. The effect of this clockwise movement of shaft is to lower arod 63 connected toarm'63' onshaft-6il for the purpose of raising thetransfe-r latch 64 into the path of a transfer hunter 65 on thelay and also raising rod 6.6iconnectedforum 66" on shaft 66 to move a shuttle position detector orfeeler 61 from its normal forward position to its rear position; This latter movement occurs while the lay is in the back partof its stroke and the lower partlof the member 61', which customarily carries a thread-cutter," is free to move rearwar-dly. As the lay moves forwardly it engages the shuttle detecto-rl61 and rocks the same forwardly, thereby exerting a downward'pullon rod-66 toeffect a counter-clockwise movement of shaft 60, Fig. 2, and return: the shaft "Each-of the dog's ofthe releasers' l5, l6 and I! has an upwardly extending hook "l0 integral therewith, see Fig. 2. 'I'he head-1| of each of these hooks is normally spaced away from the rises the corresponding book 70 moves toward the plate 32 simultaneous with movement of the dog 62 to operating position overs'helf 6|. Upon subsequent descent of the releaser 'its head 7| moves down along a path' adjacent to the'plate 32until the release-r nears the bottom of its movement,
whereupon the dog 62 and hook- 10 are r ocked back to their normal position against the action ofspring 12 by the engagement ofa' lug 13 on dog 62 and a part of plate 32.
r. The matter thus far described, except for hook vl0 and the leverage of lever 36, are of common constructionrandoperate in the usual manner. The hooks 16 are:somewhat similar to hooks shown'in my aforesaid co-pending application andperform the same general'function as set forth in that application. 5 When these'lector rocksin a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 2, one or the other of its fingers '21 or 28 will engage the top lug 2| of the releaser registered therewith to effect upward movement of the releaser, and subsequent I'OCkiIlg of the selector in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 2 willcause thefingerto engage the lower lug 22 for the purpose of returning the raised releasertoits normal down position. 'The selector ,can shift laterally so that it registers with each of the four releasers one at a time.
In carryingmy present invention into effect I secure a plate 15- to the magazine frame 32 and provide it with a stud 16 on' which is pivoted a lever 11. The pivot 16 is preferably located between the second and third 'releasers I6 and andyh'as a relatively long front provide the friction device shown in Fig. 7. Be- I tween lever 'I'I andnut 90 on the stud 161 place a compression spring 89 to create frictionalforce between the plate I and lever 11 to hold the latterstationary in anyposition it may assume.
A red 95 is formed with a slot 96 in its upper end to receive a stud 91 on the right end of I lever 'II, Fig. 3 and extends downwardly for attachment to a stop 98 which, as shown in Fig.
5, is .of inverted U-shape and has arms 90 which I straddle the shaft 29 to be guided by the latter as the stop rises and falls. The stop has a right edge I00 adapted for engagement with hearing 30 which limits movement of the stop to the right asviewedin Fig. 1.
The sto-plis provided with three vertical stop surfaces. IOI, I82 and I03 which correspond,re-,- spectively, to releasers I5, lIirand II; The stop is capable of three vertical positions as will be described and as itdescends the surfaces IOI; I02 and I03 move successively to stopping position between. bearing 30 and the casting 26 to limit movement of the selector to the right, Fig. 1, under action of sprin '5'I.
In operation it maybe assumed thatarm'18" is in its highest position and that stop 98 is up, so that stop surface IOI cooperates with sprlng51 to register the selector with front releaser I5 whichis in down: position, see Fig. 1. 7
These conditions can exist when gang G is down and shuttle S and shuttle box 50 are active.
If upon arrival at the magazine end of the loom I shuttle 8' gives indication of weft exhaustionthe selector will berocked as already described and finger21will engage lug 2I of releaser I5, raising the latter so that its hook I0 will move from thefull line to'the dotted. line position, see Fig. 8, to place head II over surface I9 on arm I8. As releaser I 5 descends upon subsequent arrival of shuttle S" in box B, the hookhead "II will give the lever 11, a partial rotation in a clockwise direction as viewed in be raised .andin its descent the hook I0 thereof will engage surface80/of arm "I8 and give lever II another partial right hand rotation resulting. in a furtherdownward movement of stud 9'I. Rodt95 andstop 98 therefore fall andupon movement of the selector to its rearmost positionlthe stop 98 will complete its downward motion to place stop surface I 03 in the path of casting 26. Upon subsequent return to action of the shuttle S" the selector will be stopped by surface I03 with its finger 28 in register with releaserII, see Fig.4. 1, l
I The third replenishment of shuttles will resultin-a reciprocation of releaser I1, and asthe latter descends its hook II! will engage surface 82 i of the arm BI and rock lever IT in a counterclockwise direction around its pivot as viewed in Fig. 4. The pivot I6 and the lengths of the arms 18 and 8| are sorelatedthat down motion of the hook on releaser I! will rocklever 11 back to its starting position with arm I8 all the way up. The parts are now set to repeat the operations already described and as successive replenishments occur bobbins are drawn from-the stacks in theorder II, I2, I3-II, I2 and I3, etc. The
bobbins are therefore drawn from these three stacks at a uniform rate and their full capacity can be utilized for replenishmentof shuttle S'.
lt will be understood that if shuttle S gives indication of exhaustion it will be replenished I from the rear stack I4 in the usual mannerat any time when shuttle S is in box B regardless of the position of lever 'I'I, I
I have chosen to describemy invention in connection with a loo-m weaving a fabric having two types of weft, the weft in shuttle S and stacks I I, I2 and I3 being relatively large, while the weft in shuttle S and stack I4'is relativelyfine or small. One bobbin drawn from stack I4 will ordinarily lastas long as two or more bob-bins, drawn from stacks II, I2 and I3. I do notwish, however, to be limited to this type of fabric in the practice of my invention, inasmuch as it is sufiicient if the selector 25moves rearwardly in time to allow the stop08 to move to its proper stopping position subsequent to one replenishment of shuttle S,
and before the next replenishment of that shuttle.
Fig. 1, thereby lowering stud 91 and permitting the rod 05 and stop 98 to fall until it rests on the castin 2B. The replenished shuttle S is then picked to the opposite side of the loom and because of the characteristic of the fabric being woven there will be a shift of the gang G upwardly to place-box 5| and shuttle S in action. This shift of thegang Gcreates a pull in the connector and arm 36 moves to its rearmost position with finger 28 in register with releaser I8. During this rearward movement of the selector 25 the stop, 98 will complete its falling movement and place surface I02 in the path of casting 26. i U
When shuttle S next returns to action there will be a slackening of the tension in connector 55 and spring 5'Ivri1l tryto move the selector back to its front position but the stop surface I02, now beingin stoppingposition, will arrest forward movement of the selector and register finger 21 with releaser I6, see Fig. 3. These conditions will continue until shuttle S requires another replenishment, whereupon slide I6 will From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided simple means for replenishing one shuttle from three stacks of a magazine by, the use of a lever and multi-step stop operated by the releasers I I, Iz and I3. It will further be seen that replenishment involving a bobbin drawn from stack I3 restores lever 11 to a position where a second sequence of bobbin releasers can start with stack I I. It will further be seen that a singlelever adapted for rocking inopposite directions by the bobbin releasers is utilized to give the stop 98 its several positions and also insure the starting of another sequence of releasers upon completion of the preceding sequence.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen thatchanges and modifications may be made therein by'those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention stacks of bobbins each provided with a bobbin releaser operated by a selector movable toregister with the releasers, one at a time, the 100m having actuating means to move the selector away fromregistry with anyreleaser and subsequently return said selector to registry with one or another of the releasers, a, stepped stop capable ofzassuming threepositions each of which said stop registers the selector with a difierentreleaser, and a controller for said stop moved to three different positions by said releasers operating oneat a time and when in each position thereof cooperating with said actuating means to effect movement of the stop to a different one of the three positions thereof.
