United States Patent 3,016,070 LOOM STOP MECHANISM Covis M. Martin, Rte. 1, Box 168, Galfney, S.C. Filed Oct. 2, 1959, Ser. No. 844,049 4 Claims. (Cl. 139-3364) The present invention relates to a loom stop mechanism for a multishuttle weft replenishing loom.
In the weaving of a decorative type fabric such as is used as a radio or television speaker screen and having one or more special weft threads in the form of a substantially flat paper or plastic strip interposed with common weft threads, the emptying of the bobbin carrying the special weft thread or strip often results in spoiling the fabric. This is due to the preset and wound condition of the strip on the bobbin. When the last of the strip leaves the bobbin as the shuttle is picked through the warp, the preset and wound condition of the last remaining portion of the plastic or paper strip on the bobbin rolls back upon itself to form a snarled mass. If the loom is not stopped at once and is permitted to op crate, the snarled mass of plastic or paper strip or weft is woven over and around and incorporated in the fabric. This particular portion of the woven fabric is worthless and must be cut out and discarded. As such fabrics are relatively expensive, discarding any portion of the fabric, and subsequently decreasing the length of the adjacent portions of the fabric, increases the cost of producing a certain length of fabric.
An object of the present invention is to provide a loom stop mechanism for stopping the operation of the loom upon the emptying of a bobbin carrying a special weft thread, the mechanism being inoperative upon the emptying of a bobbin carrying the common weft thread or upon the breakage of the common weft thread.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a loom stop mechanism which is automatic in operation responsive to the discharge of a bobbin from its magazine into the cradle for delivery to one or the other shuttles of a multishuttle weft replenishing loom.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a loom stop mechanism for a multishuttle weft replenishing loom which lends itself to installation upon the loom with ease and facility, one which requires a minimum of attention, one which'may be incorporated in the conventional electric loom stop mechanism including a relay, one which is inexpensive to manufacture, install, and service, and one which is highly effective in action.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of the portion of a multishuttle weft replenishing loom, showing the loom stop mechanism of the present invention installed thereon;
FIGURE 2 is a view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2-2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 33 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a view taken on the line 44 of FIG- URE 3;
FIGURE 5 is a view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG- URE 3; and
FIGURE 6 is a schematic view of the electrical circuit employed in the present invention.
The present invention relates to a well known type of automatic weft replenishing and bobbin-selecting mechanism as depicted in the Ryon Patent No. 1,030,748, the loom including a magazine 10 (FIGURE 1) in which are stacks of reserve bobbins 12 (FIGURE 2), each bobbin 12 being shiftable in turn from the bottom of the respective stack to a cradle (not shown) which delivers the bobbin 12 to a shuttle (not shown) for picking movement through the warp of the fabric being woven. Upon emptying of a bobbin 12, the conventional transfer mechanism of the loom causes the next bobbin in the stack to be delivered to the respective cradle and then to the waiting shuttle box. This transfer mechanism includes a setting mechanism top shaft 14 oscillating back and forth each cycle of the operation of transfer of a bobbin 12 from the magazine 10.
The mechanism of the loom includes a weft detector, designated generally by the numeral 16 in FIGURE 1, which detects the condition of the weft on the forward beat of the lay whenever the shuttle is within the shuttle box. A selector shaft or rod 18 is reciprocably mounted on the loom and is rocked when the lay of the loom is on front center and an exhausted shuttle is in the shuttle box of the loom. The rocking of the selector rod 18 is effected by the movement of a vertical rod 20 responsive to the condition of the shuttle within the shuttle box. The selector rod 18 is shiftable in a linear path and indicates the particular magazine from which a bobbin 12 is being discharged into the waiting shuttle at each instance of emptying of the respective bobbin.
The present invention provides a switch base 24 connected to the top shaft 14 by means of a block 26 on the rear face of the base 24. A set screw 28 secures the shaft 14 in a bore in the block 26. The front face of the base 24 has a plurality of spaced fixed contacts 30, 32, 34, and 36 arranged in linear alignment.
Each contact 30, 32, 34, and 36, as shown in FIG- URE 4, with reference to contact 34, extends through the base 24 and is provided with an arcuately shaped wire connecting means, as at 38 in FIGURE 5 with reference to the contact 36.
The base 24 carries a pair of studs 40 and 42, each having resilient wire connectors '44 projecting therefrom. Each of the connectors 44 With the adjacent wire connecting means 38 constitutes means selectively connect ing the adjacent one of the contacts 30, 32, 34, or 36, in circuit therewith.
A resilient arcuately shaped contact member 46 is cooperatively positioned with respect to the contacts 30, 32, 34, and 36 and connected to the selector rod 18 for movement therewith.
The contact member 46 is mounted upon a collar 48 by means of a set screw 50 (FIGURE 2) and the collar 48 is circumposed about an end portion of a casting 52 which is carried on the selector rod 18. It is to be understood, however, that the contact member 46 may be carried directly by the selector rod 18 for movement therewith in any position in which its movement is in turn in aligned relation with respect to one of the contacts 30, 32, 34, or 36. The casting 52 carries fingers which actuate the slide mechanism associated with each of the magazines 10 for delivery of one of the bobbins 12 out of the lower end of the respective magazine 10 into the waiting shuttle when the previous bobbin has been exhausted of its thread.
In use, as the top shaft 14 executes its oscillating movement responsive to the positioning of a new bobbin 12 within the assigned cradle for delivery to the shuttle, the switch base 24 is carried toward and away from the contact member 46 which has been shifted longitudinally with the rod 18 and is positioned with respect to the contacts 30, 32, 34, and 36 corresponding to the magazine 10, in which is the bobbin having the particular weft thread or strip which when the bobbin having such weft thread or strip is replenished requires the stopping of the loom.
The operator of the loom, by hooking the appropriate one of the connectors 44 with the appropriate wire contacts 30, 32, 34, or 36 with an electromagnetic switch or relay 54 (FIGURE 6) which is in circuit with the driving motor 56 of the loom with which the loom stop mechanism of the present invention is concerned. The switch 54 is in the normal closed position shown in FIG- URE 6 and upon engagement of the contact member 46 with the respective selected contact 30, 32, 34, or 36, the switch 54 is shifted to the open condition deenergizing the motor 56 and stopping the operation of the'loorn.
It is to be understood that the connectors 44 may be connected to the adjacent connecting means 38 in any combination desired so that the loom is stopped whenever a bobbin 12 drops from either or all of the magazines as desired.
It is to be further understood that the loom stop mechanism of the present invention may be employed with any weft replenishing loom having a selector rod reciprocal in a linear path and a setting mechanism top shaft oscillatable in a path transverse to the linear path of the selector rod.
What is claimed is:
1. In a multishuttle weft replenishing loom including a motor, an electromagnetic switch in circuit with said motor and normally in closed condition, a selector rod reciprocable in a linear path, and a setting mechanism top shaft oscillatable in a path transverse to said linear path, the improvement consisting in a loom stop mechanism comprising a switch base connected to said shaft for movement therewith, a fixed contact on said base, a contact member cooperatively positioned with respect to said contact and connected to said rod for movement therewith, and means connecting said fixed contact and contact member in circuit with said switch, said contact upon engagement with said contact member shifting the switch to open condition. In a multishuttle weft replenishing loom'including a motor, an electromagnetic switch in circuit with said motor and normally in closed condition, a selector rod reciprocable'in a linear path, and a setting mechanism top shaft oscillatable in a path transverse to said linear path, the improvement consisting in a loom stop mechanism comprising a switch base connected to said shaft for movement therewith, a plurality of spaced fixed contacts arranged in linear alignment on said base, a contact member cooperatively positioned with respect to said contact and connected to said rod for movement therewith, means connecting said fixed contacts and contact member in circuit with said switch, and means selectively connecting said contacts in circuit with said switch, the selectively connected contact upon engagement with said contact member shifting the switch to open condition.
3. In a multishuttle weft replenishing loom including a motor, an electromagnetic switch in circuit with said motor and normally in closed condition, a selector rod reciprocable in a linear path, a casting carried on said rod, and a setting mechanism top shaft oscillatable in a path transverse to said linear path, the improvement consisting in a loom stop mechanism comprising a switch base connected to said shaft for movement therewith, a fixed contact on said base, a resiliently arcuately curved contact member cooperatively positioned with respect to said contact and connected to said casting for movement therewith, and means connecting said fixed contact and contact member in circuit with said switch, said contact upon engagement with said contact member shifting the switch to open condition.
4. In a multishuttle weft replenishing loom including a motor, an electromagnetic switch in circuit with said motor and normally in closed condition, a selector rod reciprocable in a linear path, and a setting mechanism top shaft oscillatable in a path transverse to said linear path, the improvement consisting in a loom stop mecha nism comprising a switch base connected to said shaft for movement therewith, a plurality of spaced fixed contacts arranged in linear alignment on one face of said base, a wire connecting means connected to each of said contacts and carried by the other face of said base, a connector positioned adjacent to and selectively engageable with each of said connecting means, a contact member cooperatively positioned with respect to said contacts and connected to said rod for movement therewith, and means electrically connecting each of said connectors and said contact member incircuit with said switch, each wire connecting means upon engagement of the respective contact with said contact member effecting the energization of said electromagnetic switch and shifting the latter to open condition.
