Description

' (No Model.) v
P. S. SHIRLEY. Mustache Guard or Protector.
N0- Patentedjanr4, I881.
[72 van to):
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK S. SHIRLEY, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
MUSTACHE GUARD OR PROTECTOR.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,266, dated January 4, 1881. t v Application filed June 1, 1880. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK STAGEY SHIRLEY, glass-manufaoturer, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State ot'Massachuse-tts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mustache Guards or Protectors; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
My invention relates to an improvement in mustache-guards to be employed in connection with such devices as are used for drinking purposes, and in the combination and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter more specifical] y stated.
Figure 1 shows the guard or protector arranged to be applied on a glass having an inwardlyturned edge. A is the guard. b b are springs for retaining it in position on the glass. Fig. 2 shows plan section of the same. Fig. 3 shows a guard applicable for glasses having regular flare. A is the guard. The division-piece O, fitting intowidest diameter of glass, prevents it slipping down in act of drinking. Fig. at is a plan section of same, dot-ted line showing position of division-piece. Fig. 5 shows similar guard provided with a band to hold same. in position. Ais the guard. B is the retaining-band. D is a hook to pass over back of glass and keep guard from slipping forward. Fig. 6 shows guard A, with retaining-band B arranged "to clasp or fall against the back, and would be grasped to the glass in the act of drinking. Fig. 7 shows the guard provided with handle and plate, making a cheap and handy holder.
Ordinary glasses are found to be defective for dispensing frothy beverages, owing to the freth coming'in contact with and Wetting the mustache. My invention obviates this, and
is a modification of the guard and protector claimed in a joint application to be filed by myself and John Boswell, and in its present form is more applicable for general use, as it can be used independent of any holder, one form, Fig. 1, being held in position by a springcatch, and is readily detachable for cleansing, and can be kept in the washing-fountain, usually convenient to the soda-fountain, until required for use, each customer being able to observe he receives a clean guard. Fig. 3 is used by simply dropping in place, being held in position by the division-plate. In Fig. -5 the guard is laid on top of glass. the hook D holding it to back edge of the glass. Fig. 6 is a modification of these, and for some purposes it is obvious that the forms of these can be materially modified and made adaptable for the particular kind of glass they are specially intended to be used with, the main object of my invention being to provide a cheap and readily-adjustable guard or mustache-protector to glasses or drinking-vessels, either with or without springs, and independent of holder. X
By the arrangement as shown in Fig. 7 I form a cheap and useful holder provided with a guard; but the principle of this is embodied in the current joint invention referred to. I
My inventionwill be found useful for many purposes, and is novel and desirable, as it is to be applied to any ordinary glass or drinking-vessel'.
Having described my invention, whatIcla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A mustache guard or protectorhaving the plate A and the band B to retain the same in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDK. s. SHIRLEY.
Witnesses:
