WEARING APPAREL Filed March 9, 1944 Patented Oct. 3l, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT ori-ica WEARING APPAREL Philip shaman, nmknne, Mass.
Application March 9, 1944, Serial No. 525,832
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in wearing apparel and more particularly t slacks, trousers, shorts, ladies skirts and the like.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a practical, neat aesthetic-appearing and simple article of the aforementionedl type which can be very readily and easily applied to and removed from the body of the wearer.
In articles of Wearing apparel of the abovementioned type it is a desirable feature that the garment be made such that it may be readily adapted to the body of the wearer, and where such articles are made with front drop flaps and side pockets, that the flap and adjacent parts be so constructed and designed as to withstand constant use and as not to interfere with the placing and withdrawal of the hands in and from the pockets, after the drop flap has been adjusted.
Furthermore, it is desirable that the pocket linings and portions of the apparel material around the pockets be so joined that when adjustment at the waist has been made, the pocket linings will not be exposed to view.
It is, therefore, another object of the present invention to provide a article of wearing apparel of the above-mentioned type which adapts itself to the waist line of the wearer, is sturdy around the movable parts, and wherein the front drop ap is so designed and constructed as to at all times permit easy access to the side pockets of the garment.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide slacks, skirts or the like with the aforementioned construction which will maintain its attractiveness and style at any stage of Waist line adjustment.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a garment of the aforementioned type wherein the front drop flap is provided with a band portion cooperating in overlapping engagement with the band portion of the remainder of the article to constitute a complete waist encircling band which .may be adjustable and wherein the overlapping parts of the waist band portions are each normally removably secured together at at least two points.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide slacks which may be readily and conveniently opened at its front top portion for permitting an easy dropping thereof for part or full removal of the garment and the replacing thereof.
Yet another object of the present invention is to incorporate the said desired features While still maintaining the aesthetic and pleasing appearance of the garment.
Another object of the present invention is to provide slacks or the like, which does not require the use of separatebelt means and which in themselves, are capable of being easily ad- Justed to the waist line of the wearer.
It is yet another `object of the present invention to utilize a portion of the front drop flap as part of the pockets construction of the garment. These and other objects and advantageous features are accomplished by the simple, novel and practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter disclosed and iilustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting an essential part of the disclosure, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the upper portion of the garment;
Fig. 2 is a rear view oi' Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1 with the front drop flap being shown in lowered or downward position; and
Fig. 4 is a front view of the upper portion of the garment showing the front flap dropped.
Fig. 5 is a right-hand side elevational Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the invention is shown as applied to slacks 80 I Il comprising leg-engaging section I2, waist-engaging section I3 and the mid-section II.
Section II is provided with a loose front portion I5 constituting a drop iiap terminating at its upper end in the waist band portion I 3a having button-holes I6 adapted to accommodate the plurality of buttons I1 secured to waist band portion I3. It is preferable to provide the garment with a plurality of complementary fastening means such as two or more buttons I1 and button-holes I6 on either side of the vertical medial line of the flap I5, making the garment readily adjustable to accommodate the waist line size of the wearer and also to securedly attach the flap to the waist band portion Il.
Flap I5 is seamed at I8 to side wall panels I9. The side wall panels I9 are each seamed at its upper edge to the end portions of waist band section i 3 by the line of stitching 28. Secured to wall panel I9 by the line of stitching 25 and to waist band section I3 by the continuation of the stitching 26, is one of the side walls 20 of pocket 22. This side wall 20 is preferably extended under panel i9 its entire area providing a lining therefor. The ends of waist band portion I3 ex- 55 tend respectively beyond side walls 20. Flap I5 view of has its side edges lia .particularly made arcuate as clearly seen in Fig. l, these edges always overlying the panels I9 regardless of waist line adjustments made. Providing flap i with these arcuate or curved side edges permits easy access lo the pockets 22 through opening 30 regardless of waist line adjustments made. Seamed to each of the side edges I5a of flap l5 by the line of stitching |5b and disposed on the underside of the flap isa Imarginal strip 23, the latter also being secured t1) waist band portion |30, between its layers |3b and |3c as by a line of stitching 3|.
Secured to marginal strip 23, as by a line of stitching 32, and also to edge |5a by the line of stitch-ing |5b, is the other side wall 2| of pocket 22; side wall 2| extending under marginal strip 23 constituting a lining therefor. This side wall 2| is secured at its upper end to waist band portion |3a between its layers |3b, |30, as by the line of stitching 3|.
The pocket side walls 20, 2| are joined together at their lower portions by the line of stitching 24 forming the cavity of the pocket for holding articles, thisline of stitching terminating at 26a, leaving their upper edge portions 21th and 24e separate and the ap l5 free to be swung upwardly and downwardly.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
l. In an article of wearing apparel a back portion and a front portion, a waist band section secured to said back portion, said waist band section having spaced apart free ends extending to the front of said article, side wall panels secured to said back portion, said panels being spaced apart and being secured respectively at their upper ends to said waist band section, a lining for each of said panels, said lining being secured to said panel and to said waist band section and extending beyond said rpanel constituting a rst side wall member for a pocket, said free ends of said waist band section extending beyond said panels and said linings, said front portion being secured to said back portion and to said panels at a distance below said waist band portions and being unsecured thereto thereabove providing a drop flap for said article, a waist band front section secured to said flap, said waist band front section adapted to overlie the free end portions of said rst mentioned waist band section, a plurality of complementary fastening means on said waist band sections and on either side of the vertical medial line of said article, for maintaining said ap in upward position and adjusted relatively to said back portion, the sides of said flap being curved inwardly and overlapping said panels when said flap is in upward operative position, a marginal strip secured to each of said sides of said flap and being disposed therebehind, a second side wall member for each of said pockets, said second member being secured to said strip and to said waist band front section, said first and second side wall members being marginally secured together at their lower portions constituting said pocket and having a portion of one of their adjacent side edges unconnected to permit the said ilap to be swung upwardly and downwardly.
