Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM JOHNSON, OF I-IAMPSTEAD', NEW HAMPSHIRE.
MACHINE FOR CHAMFERING SOLES 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 23,585, dated April 12, 1859.
To all whom "Lt may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J oHNsoN, of Hampstead, in the county of Rockingham and State of N ew Hampshire, have invented an improvement in the tool. for chamfering soles for boots and shoes for which Letters Patent of the United States numbered 21,760 were granted to me on the 12th day of October, A. D. 1858; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l, is a top view; Fig. 2, a front elevation; Fig. 3, a rear elevation, and Fig. 4, a transverse section of my improved chamfering tool.
Such tool as exhibited in the drawings is composed of a knife holder A, a stationary edge bearer B, a sole rest C, a spring presser D, and a knife F, the said knife being provided with a handle 7L, and inserted with the knife holder and held in place therein by a screw ai. From the said knife holder a lip ZJ, extends upward at a right angle, and has formed through it a curved slot c, for the reception of a clamp screw CZ, which extends through the said slot, and into another' such lip or carrier f, projecting upward from and serving to support the sole rest C, as well as the edge rest B.
In the chamfering tool as patented by me, a handle was fastened directly to the sole rest and extended outward therefrom at a right angle to the knife and gave sup ort to the spring presser which also stoo or was arranged about at a right angle with the knife edge.
In my present improved tool, I dispense entirely with the said handle and in place thereof extend the sole rest backward with respect to the knife and its handle as shown in the drawings or so as to enable me to arrange the spring presser about parallel to the knife edge in a vertical direction as indicated in the figures, the same causing t-he spring presser to bear directly against or upon the edge of the sole instead of at a distance therefrom as it is likely to when arranged as in my patented tool.
Vhen the presser rests on the sole inside of its edge, and not directly on the edge, the edge of the sole is liable not to be reduced to the desired thickness or to be unevenly cut, but by making the presser stand at a right angle to the direction of movement of the knife while it may be cutting a sole, the edge of the sole will be borne firmly down upon the sole rest and will be evenly cut. Besides, the presser is not likely to twist or exert a torsion strain so as to affect the proper adjustment of the knife with respect to the sole and edge rests as it is likely to in the arrangement of the spring presser as shown in my patented chamfering tool.
The aforesaid new arrangement of the presser and its rest or support C, with ref erence to the carrier f, and the knife holder not only aords advantages in the action of the presser on the sole, but enables me to dispense with the handle project-ing from the presser support and to make use of the knife handle lz, as a means for holding the whole instrument and moving it against a sole. While my improved tool therefore preserves the invent-ion heretofore patented, viz., a means not only of adjusting the angular position of the knife with respect to the sole rest, but the distance of the knife therefrom at the edge gage, it contains an important improvement in the arrangement of the spring presser and the sole rest.
Therefore, I claim- The improved chamfering tool or manufacture, as constructed with its sole rest and presser arranged with respect to the carrier,
f, and the knife holder substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings and.
as hereinbefore specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
WILLIAM JOHNSON. Witnesses:
ALBERT M. EDDY, F. P. Ham, Jr.
