Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
D. E. SOMES, OF BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
HEEL-SHAVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,648, dated November 18, 1860.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. E. SoMEs, of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Shaves for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the let ters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings making a part of this specification A represents the stock of the shave which is constructed in any of the known and usual ways said stock being provided with guides a, a, as shown in N i B igure 2.
E, shows a gage which I use for setting the shave at a proper angle.
B, represents the knife which is set into the stock in the manner shown in Fig. Q. This knife is provided with two edges, as seen Fig. 3, and is held firmly in the stock by means of set screws, D, D, which pass through the sides of the stock, having their ends bearing against the heels of the knife as shown in dotted line Fig. l.
C, C, represent regulating and adjusting screws which pass through the stock as seen Fig. 2 and which bear with their inner bends against the heels of the knife B, for the purpose of giving the knife the proper set. It will be readily seen that by screwing up the adjusting screws, C, C, the knife will be made to stand out farther from the stock, and that by reversing t-he motion of the screws the edges of the knife will stand closer to the stock when the knife is adjusted to any desired position it may be there secured by means of the setscrews D, D.
The knife is made with two edges and the stock is provided with two guides and with two openings or slots s, s, in which the gage E, may be adjusted, whereby I am enabled to cut in two ways with the same shave.
In using this shave the guides a, a, work or move in the crevice between the upper and the heel while the gage E, moves upon the rim of a plate which is secured to the heel, for the purpose of forming a guide and rest for it.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The within described heel shave constructed substantially in the manner set forth being provided with guides a., a, gage E, adjusting screws C, C, set screws D, D, and double edged knife B, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
D. E. SOMES.
