HIBAM A. GRAY, JR, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
HAIR-CRIMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,680, dated December 21, 1880. Application filed August 12, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom t't may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM A. GRAY, Jr., of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Hair-Crimper, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of haircrimpers which are provided with means for drying the hair.
The improvement consists in making the crimper of two connected and parallel tubes, with a slide on the same, as the above are hereinafter more fully set forth and their combination claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the handle of the crimper. Fig. 2 is a view of the connected and parallel tubes and of the slide on the same. Fig. 3 is a view of Fig. 4 is a view of the tubes and heating-rods inserted in the same, and of the slide on the tubes; and Fig. 5 is a view of one end of the slide.
To enable others to make and use my improved critnper, I will describe it and the way it is used.
The straight tubes to (1, Figs. 2 and 4, may be made of a single tube bent in the form shown, being connected by the bent part c,- or they may be separate tubes connected to an end piece.
The slide B, Figs. 2 and 4, is made of sheet metal, and its ends are formed as shown in Fig. 5, and so as to press on the tubes with sufficient firmness to hold the hair wound on the tubes as the slide is moved against it.
The heating-rods b b, Figs. 3 and 4, maybe made of a single rod, in the form shown, being connected by the bent end an; or they may be separate rods connected to an end piece.
The removable handle C is provided with a slot, and is made to slip onto the bent end as and hold the rods as they are being heated.
The manner of using my improved. crimper is as follows: Thes1ide being removedfrom the tubes, the hair, being dampened, is wound on and is crossed between the tubes, and is held by placing the slide on the tubes and moving it against the hair. The crimper is left in the hair until it is dry. When it is desired to dry the hair expeditiously, the handle C is placed on the bent end or, connecting the heating-rods, and when the rods are sufficiently heated they are inserted in the tubes, as shown in Fig. 4, and dry the hair.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The improved hair-crimper herein described, consisting of the handle C, the connected and parallel tubes at a, the slide B, made to clasp the tubes and hold the hair, and of the connected and parallel rods 1) b, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. In a hair-crimper, the connected and parallel tubes a a, in combination with the connected and parallel rods b I), as and for the purpose set forth.
'HIRAM A. GRAY, JUNIOR.
