' SHEET POSITIONING DEVICE Filed Sept 17, 1945 INVENTOR Patented Aug. 15, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in paper handling devices and is directed more particularly to improvements in devices adapted for use with printing presses for positioning sheets of paper relative to a stop or the like.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a device of novel form for positioning paper sheets as they are fed or intended to be fed against or relative to a stop or other means.
Various novel objects and advantages of the invention will be observed from the following,

A free end H) of the bracket is disposed angularly of the main body thereof and a lever I2 is pivoted to a screw l4 extending through the part III.
The lever I2 is in the form of a U and has spaced side arms l6 and I8 connected by a bottom portion 20. The arm l8 of the lever [2 receives the screw 14 and a thumb nut 22 on said screw I4 is adapted in cooperation therewith to clamp the lever in adjusted positions on the bracket end II).
A closely wound primary coil spring 24 has an end 26 secured to the side arm I8 of lever I2 by means of tabs 28 which are struck up from the part l8 and bent over so as to overlie and grip the end 26 of the spring.
'A relatively flat ribbon-like secondary spring member 30 has an end secured to the free end of spring 24 in any suitable manner and it has on its free end a friction pad 32. Said pad may be of any material more or less adapted to frictionally engage various kinds of paper and may include rubber composition, sponge rubber or the like. The spring 24 is adapted to flex relative to its point of attachment to the part [8. A stop is formed at 34 on the lever by bending a part of the wall 20 upwardly. This stop functions to limit counterclockwise movements of the spring 24 relative to lever I2.
The parts I6 and [8 of the lever 12 serve as stops to limit movements of the spring 24 sidewise so that the spring is more or less guided for flexing in a direction opposed to axis of shaft 4.
The device may be used in various ways on different machines such as printing presses and in one way it may be carried by an oscillating shaft such as 4.
A table is represented by dot-dash lines 40 onto which sheets of paper 42 are delivered. It is desired that the forward edges of the sheets register with or abut a notch or stop-shoulder 44 of a roll 46.
When the edge of the sheet does abut the stop 44 it may be assumed that the sheet is properly positioned so as to be subsequently registered correctly for the printing operation. However, it is difficult to feed all sheets to the stop since for various reasons many are likely to fall slightly short thereof. This is objectionable especially where printed matter must be in register, as in color printing.
By oscillating the positioning device as by a shaft such as 4 the toe of the pad 32, as the device swings counterclockwise, frictionally engages the paper sheet. The spring 24 flexes according to the adjustment of the parts and the underside of the pad more or less engages the paper so as to move it against the stop. Since the spring 24, spring 30 and pad 32 are yieldable the action of the pad is such that the paper sheet may be moved various distances to the stop.
The novel construction provides a device that is readily adjustable to adapt the device to various kinds of paper and conditions.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A positioning device for acting on sheets of paper on a printing press or the like comprising in combination, a bracket having a free end, a
lever adjustably mounted on said bracket, a primary spring having one end fixed to said lever providing a free end, a secondary fiat spring fixed to the free end of said primary spring providing a free end, and a friction pad of yieldable material fixed to the free end of said secondary spring.
2. A positioning device for acting on sheets of paper on a printing press or the like comprising in combination, a bracket having a free end, a lever adjustably mounted on said bracket, a pri mary spring having one end fixed to said lever providing a free end, a secondary fiat spring fixed to the free end of said primary spring providing a free end, a friction pad of yieldable material fixed to the free end of said secondary spring, and means on said lever limiting movements of said primary spring.
3. A positioning device for acting on sheets of paper on a printing press or the like comprising in combination, a bracket having a free end, a lever having spaced side arms connected by an end member, adjustable connections between one of said arms and the free end of the bracket, a primary spring between the side arms of the lever having one end fixed to one of said side arms providing a free end, a secondary spring connected to the free end of the primary spring providing a free end, and a yieldable pad fixed to the free end of the secondary spring.
4. A positioning device for acting on sheets of paper on a printing press or the like comprising in combination, a bracket having a free end, a lever having spaced side arms connected by an end member, adjustable connections between one of said arms and the free end of the bracket, a primary spring between the side arms of the lever having one end fixed to one of said side arms providing a free end, a secondary spring connected to the free end of the primary spring providing a free end, and a yieldable pad fixed to the free end of the secondary spring, said end member of the lever having a portion extending upwardly between the said side arms to provide a stop for said primary spring.
