Description

Dec. 14 1926.
E. CABELLA GAUGE FOR PLATEN RRINTING PRESSES Original Filed July '9, 1925 INVENTOR Patented Dec. '14, 19 26.,
r and a depth of T g EMILE CABELLA, or Nev/YORK, N. Y.
GAUGEFOR IPLATEN PRINTING PRESSES.
Application filed July 9, 1925, Serial No. 42,379. Renewed May 1o,'1e2 e.'
The object of the present invention is to provide a gauge for the feed boards of platen printing presses, so designed as to include, as a unit, an adjustable tongue and being adapted for securingto the top sheet or tympan of the feed board by gluing supplemented by a paper strip, whereby the gauge, when secured in place, will have no tendency to cut the tympan and will insure perfect register of the sheets in the printing operation. I
The invention will be understood by rat; erence to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view. of a gauge constructed in accordance with the invention secured upon the tympan of a press, and
Figure 2 is a plan view illustrating'a make-up with the usual'number of gauges in position. g V
Referring to the drawings, .A'indicates the tympan of a platen printing press and 1 my improved gauge; The gauge is rectangular in form and provided with broad fiat upper and lower faces. A suitable. size :for the gauge is %%I in length by %%in width But any desired size may be employed.
Extending through the gauge in a line substantially parallel with its upper and lower faces is a slot 2 and in this slot I place a guide tongue 3, Tongue 3 is bent upwardly toward its forward end, and may be bent downward at its rear end so as to provide a; convenient means for moving the I tongue 'endwise' in the slot 2 for adjustment of its effective length, 7
In practice the depth of slot 2 may be appreciably'greater than the thickness of the spring tongue so that the latter may be readily adjusted within the slot, a slight curvature from the front to the rear end of the tongue'causing the latter to bearupon the. walls of the slot with suficient friction to hold the tongue in itsadjusted position against ordinary stresses during the print: ing operation. 7
Inasmuch as the slot 2 is placed near one end of the gauge, an area is provided for the reception of a paper strip 4:, one surface gauge andalso to the tympan A. In prac tlce the lower face of the gauge also will be of the gauge itself and the overset strip 4, the gauge is secured to the tympan sheet beyond any possibility of movement'relathereof being coated with glue and the strip belng glued to the top and side edges of the tive thereto in the printingoperation, and
the tympan sheet is not cut or perforated as in the case of the usual forms of gauges provided with tongues. Also the tympan sheet may be raised at any timewithout afe fecting the gauges secured thereon, to enable the placing of other sheets under the tympan sheet or the removal of sheets, in order to raisegor'lower the tympan 'relatively to 'thetype face. 7
I It is desirable that the gauges .be so placed on the tympan sheet'that the tongues inthe c'ase of an automaticfeedpress shall be nearest the side margins of the tympan,
'as in Figure 2, the position of the. tongues being reversed press. I 1
I have shown at a, Figure 1, slots-additional to that shown'at .2, and I reserve right to use as many slots as desirable so in the case of. a hand feed that the tongue may be placed at various points relatively I as desired by the operator.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as'follows:'' r f A gauge for. printing presses comprising a metal block, thesaid block beingformed with an aperture extending. through its to the length of the gauge,
side faces toward one end thereof. and a gauge of metal movably held within said aperture'the said block being adapted for gluing directly upon a tympanand being adapted to receive supplementary securing means in the. form of a narrow strip of paper coated f with glue for attachment to the'block and to the tympan at one side of the'tongue. In testimony whereof, I have name to this specification.
-' EMILE OABELLA.
